There will never be another Brian Wilson.. I am glad I get to live in the same lifetime as him although he's 74 and I'm 20. I just "dicovered" The Beach Boys music about 8 months ago and went through the pet sounds phenomenon and never looked at music the same way. This mans music changed my life. I've listened to his music in times when I went through depression for months, I've used pet sounds as a pain killer and honestly it's made me cry so much, the music is just beautiful. I've never heard or never will hear anything like it again. That album itself has harmonies, instrumentals and lyrics that are out of this world.. outta sight! I have to go see Brian live before it's too late. I am really thankful for his music and for everything he risked just to make the music he made. it's changed my life. When I die I hope I get to hear his music wherever it is my soul ends up.

Oh shit... wow... to have written this before sgt. Pepper is a big deal. Along with everything else he did. I wish it hadn't fucked him up so bad that the beatles released sgt pepper and "beat him" for the best record ever. I think and I'm almost certain I have read elsewhere that that fucked him up and messed with him really bad which is one of the reasons why smile never happened and part of the reason he had the breakdown. Anyway back to this song; can you imagine what smile may have sounded like if history had been in Brian's favor? This song and sound is beyond rock n roll and music as we know it. Only Brian could truly see the future at this time and he was both miles ahead of everyone even today and miles high in the sky. Hopefully we hear some more awesome goodies in the new surfs up and sunflower sessions being released really soon.

Being a teenager in 1964 and experiencing all the amazing music being created in the next 10 years was an incredible experience. The Beach Boys began as a very commercial band then with great harmonies and quickly progressed to a very advanced point in 1966. Surf's Up was a later masterpiece with some misplaced songs among absolute sparkling gems. It was a bright flash that we loved. Some of us lost track of the Beach Boys around this time and because the Beach Boys faded from the "charts" were surprised to hear the stunningly beautiful, ethereal songs they did on this album. Van Dyke Parks' lyrics had a LOT to do with it. It was an endearing revelation.

Usually, a musician can eat for life if he has only one hit song.
And yet, his creative peak continued from 1963 to about 1968,

I think there are a _lot_ of genuinely genius musicians....like, a LOT actually.
But Brian Wilson does stand alone. Both for the sheer reality of his genius...but also for how brief it was. How tragic the before and after was. He's a truly good person, with real issues, who also has a once in a century gift for music. He got a brief window to realize that...and in fact he fully realized it better than 99.9% of people could. It's cool that younger people like you and your production buddies have such a sincere interest in a culture and sound that's an easy two generations removed from your day-to-day experience. At 25 my nephew is similar, with an interest in Elvis, Sinatra, Dylan, and others, that was sparked when he was around 16.We saw Dylan in concert about eight years ago. As a side note, my 'personal' Beach Boys song is 'When I Grow Up (To Be A Man)". As you may know, given your interests, that song was released as a single on August 24th, 1964 -- the day on which I was born. ; ] Peace, and keep the fires burning!

This song is why officially the beach boys are my favorite. They can sing simple fun songs, complex, melancholy, most of all, this song lyrically is absolutely poetic and creative. It's just what I need at this moment.

Music video for “Surf’s Up” by Brian Wilson in which a surfer is engulfed by waves and is pulled out by worried life guards an onlookers. The song continues as the surfer appears to lose consciousness and reawakens upon a very similar beach but now the film is black and white and there are no other people but him. He is walking around with a smile at how beautiful everything is. He is carrying his surf board as he walks around admiring the beauty. There are quick cuts back to the paramedics trying to save him with people frantically giving him CPR and trying to revive him. In one of the cuts, one of the paramedics searches his belongings for medical-related information and comes across his wallet. The Surfer is still admiring the landscapes around him when he notices a gigantic tidal wave forming (this could occur around the instance of the song where Brian sings “Surf’s up mmm…aboard a tidal wave"). With a flush of excitement in his eyes, he hurriedly enters the water ready for the wave of his life. The song begins to approach its apex as the surfer glides the wave which is now swelling to a gargantuan size. We then cut back to the crowd forming in reality as folks try to revive the surfer to no avail. As Brian sings “I heard the word…wonderful thing…a children’s song…”, the paramedic flips pasts the surfer’s license and sees a photograph of him clutching his 11 year old son on the beach, giant smiles across their faces. They are both holding surf boards. The photograph appears to be quite old. Finally, as the song is beginning it’s final coda, we cut one final time to the surfer in his “dream” now at the very top of the tidal wave, a look of utter elation washes over him as he is now high enough to penetrate the clouds. As he is blowing through them, shards of white gushing past him as the speed accelerates, his expression changes for the first time. It is one of a deep confusion as he squints through the passing clouds and sees the boy from the photograph standing there and laughing. The man then begins laughing as he outstretches his arms and leaps from the surfboard into the air. The boy does the same and they are hurtling towards one another in a surreal manner. In the closing seconds of the song, you can see the man and boy's index fingers nearly touch, in a manner mimicking Michelangelo’s “The Creation of Man”, before abruptly cutting to black.

This is in my opinion the best version of this song! Brian performed "Surf's Up" here with powerful and amazing passionate feeling! He never recaptured it quite this perfectly on the future recordings of the song. It's a very complex tempo to catch. The future recordings he had done the song just a tad to fast. I LOVE THIS VERSION OF "SURF'S UP!" 😁💖🎶
