I show you how I approach a service to a sewing machine.
I want to have the machine back to the way I’d like it if the machine were my own. That involves checking everything, making it clean and presentable and enjoyable to use.
This machine came to me because it was jamming. After that fix, I discovered a list of other faults that needed attention.
0:00 - Safety Device Activated
0:09 Jamming repair
0:15 Dismantle
0:32 Needle, Foot with Ankle
0:45 Needle Bed
1:05 Needle Plate
1:40 Remove base cover
3:32 Thread Cutter Slo-Mo
3:51 Remove Bulb Cover
4:10 Visual Inspection
4:30 Clean
6:13 Oil
7:22 Re-Assemble
8:39 Machine is not zigzagging - hard reset.
9:00 Test Stitch
10:00 Recalibrate Top Tension
11:30 Final Stitch Out
12:53 Tension Perfect
ZIG ZAG FAILURE - hard reset required (a specialist area requiring it’s own video)
NEEDLE BAR ADJUSTMENT (this is a specialist area and needs it’s own video)
I put this video out because I find so many people accept a shoddy service and never challenge their repair shop. Don’t pay for a service if it doesn’t include a clean. That’s just a lazy, slack, incompetent service.

When I sent my machines away years ago, they used to come back dirty. Not always fixed, and in the most recent incident, broken in two other parts (by one of the leading manufacturers)! I would have never known had I not inspected the services for myself and was refunded for the shoddy work. I do have the knowledge and experience and fortunately, my reputation is well known.
I’ve recently bought a machine off eBay which had been serviced with the intention the seller had told the Brother dealer she will want it looking great. When I saw the machine - it was in a bad state, not how I would return a machine back to it's owner. Stitching was great but for £125, I was very much unimpressed. - Jak na to + styl
I bought the lowest end Brother machine Walmart had to offer, I’m a beginner and I’m struggling with many issues. I’m subscribing to your channel in hopes I can learn everything I’m doing wrong 😊 Thank you so much for your posts!
Also, I mostly use mine for making junk journals and sew through a lot of paper/fabrics combinations, so I’m thinking maybe I should change my needle more often because I may be dulling them? I get a lot of tangled nesting underneath and skipped stitching.
What a fantastically detailed video! All of your videos are second to none 👍👍
Thank you x Glad you like them!
Hi Abi. Great video again, love having you back.👍👍
Thank you! 😃
Thank you so much. I will be getting my Brother Inovis F420 delivered tomorrow, so this Video is WONDDERFUL. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful! Congrats on your new machine, look out for my other F420 videos, the stitch creating is a great tool if you're a creative person
@@AbisDen Oh, one of the reasons for buying this machine was the stitch creation. I will be selling my Bernette B38 that I had before because I never loved that machine, and she deserves better, :) I am looking for more F420 videos. LOVE the machine cleaning videos. Makes me less scared doing it.
Nice video. Makes me want to clean my machines.
Go for it! 🙌🏽☺️
I have the Melody, which appears to be Babylock’s version of this machine. Twice I have had the dreaded safety device activation message. I fruitlessly scoured CZcams and the rest of the internet looking for information beyond “take it to the repair shop.” Thank you for this video!
The “Babylock” sewing machines aren’t actually made by the original Babylock Japan. Babylock Japan don’t produce sewing machines. These machines have been produced by the same factories in which Brother have theirs made. Just generic factories. It’s like buying a phone that looks like the Apple iPhone from a generic factory and slapping Apple on it. So you’ll find this reset should work for you.
Hi Abi. TheThank you for explaining the possible causes of problems. You give me hope to solve mine. My Juki mO 654 is stuck, literally. The right needle hit the upper looper and broke. I have tried oiling the machine but it still doesnt worl. I tried “ adjusting” the upper looper so that it won’t hit the right needle, but now it is totally stuck. I can’t move the handwheel, so I left it at that. I hope you can help by showing how to fix it. Thank you so much. Dellie
Sorry to hear that you’re having so much trouble. Possibly there is a fragment stuck somewhere in the mechanism but I doubt that. Juki machines are amazingly resilient You may have forced it round too much? It’s so tricky to know without seeing it. Many problems are individual to the machine x
Can you please tell me how to reset factory settings Brother DS1300 Model Sewing machine
How much Friz
Thank you, I don’t sell machines x sorry
Around $600-700 in US dollars.
Too much maintenance to dust a machine. Too many screws. Mechanical machines all the way for me! I can snip threads and needle up and down with my hand wheel! Never get an error message on my Kenmore!
🌷👍🏽I’m with you all the way !
