    After doing guitar setups for 40+ years, if you don't have a 6" 64 or 32 ruler, you can use a quarter for the low E and a dime for the high E strings to set the string height from the 12 fret. Hey, bud you doing good deed here to help out younger/newer guitar players to properly setup their guitars. You got my thumbs up dude!!

    • @captainamerica9353
      @captainamerica9353 Před 4 lety +1

      gmlasam, do you set up guitars with string and relief specs that high, also?

    • @PonderousSage
      @PonderousSage Před 4 lety +1

      gmlasam does the coin slip under without raising the string at all or can it barely touch the string as it slides under?

    • @gmlasam
      @gmlasam Před 4 lety

      Danny Aguilar adjust to when the strings just touched the coin. The measurements in this video is ideal starting point and adjust to your preference.

    • @gmlasam

      Captain America depends on the client but I start using the specs from this video to work from and fine tune to preference

      gmlasam ok cool, I really appreciate the reply! I just got my first Epiphone les Paul standard and the string broke so I was gonna try it myself. It was already set up so I wonder if I shouldn’t have messed with anything and just put the strings on. Now I’ve touched the bridge and all that so I guess I’m locked in now lol

    Thanks man, this is exactly what is needed on CZcams, just the quick specs. There's so many setup videos and web articles that beat around the bush until you finally get to the specs if you get them at all. This one is perfect, give you the specs first for those that need, then get into the procedure for those that need it.

    Thanks for this! At first I couldn’t believe that the height between strings and pickups was 6/64-6/64” because I’ve been playing mine as I got it from the store with them like 1/4 above the pickups! Just spent the past 2 days setting up my Epiphone LP properly and WOW!!! It has never sounded better!! Tone is rich and the sustain lasts for eternity. Thanks again!

    One quick thing for all of you that may attempt to do these measurements and adjustments. You should be checking these measurements, as well as tuning and intonation IN THE PLAYING POSITION. You don't play the guitar laying on it's back...Unless it's a pedal steel. Check everything in the playing position, then lay it back down to make the adjustments. Pick it up in to playing position to recheck. Try tuning your guitar on its back, then tune it in playing position. You will hear/see a difference on a tuner.

    @ianj7813 Před 2 lety

    This is probably a good starting point and better than most. I've seen a lot give measurements for neck relief and string hight lower than this but my experience is they are just too low. Personally I don't do measurements as all guitars are different. Raise the bridge until there is no fretting out from the 12th fret upwards (nice clean notes) when bending 1st and second strings up a full tone. Then tighten, or loosen (depending on where your starting from) the neck so that all notes below the 12th fret down (mainly the first frets and around the 6th frets area ) ring clean without buzzing or dead notes. Job done.

    Hi, I have a question. I have a 1976 Ibanez Les Paul, I've had since 1980. For the longest time, I have wondered...the space between my bridge, and treble pick up is wider than a Gibson. Gibson's are a tad closer. Was that just another attempt at changing, to satisfy the law suit? Because, right before I bought mine, my friend bought his (both white) and his machine head is exactly like the Gibson , while mine slightly differs. ...just curious about the gap, I love the guitar, it sounds, and plays great. Thank you,..and thanks for the video!

    • @vrvretro
      @vrvretro Před 7 lety +1

      Bridge saddle facings, if it was used a previous setup might have had to flip them to put them into place. Problems in the setup is when the saddle screws are not long enough or are too long, and then the spring is too thick when compressed, or just some other problem getting them right. You want to remember that the string saddle slides back and forth to get the string the best possible length to be close to exact when you pluck harmonic octave at the middle, 12th fret, compared to when you have it pressed down at the 12th fret, they should be exact. Extending the length of the saddle will make a sharp note when pressing down lower the note into correctness. This all depends on the entire setup as this video describes when you want to lower the action into playable position without strings buzzing against frets. So, some of this you know, but a setup is sometimes back and forth so a string tuner turner is kind of a good tool when you have to loosen the strings over and over. If your knobs are not metal, do them by hand, tuning and detuning. Non-metal tuning knobs can crack or break and that is a big pain in the butt. I have some Fender saddle issues and it's not uncommon to turn the whole bridge around and put the saddles around the other way due to the issues I first mentioned.

    a very well-meaning and helpful video on setting up a Gibson L.P. … It has certainly taken out much of the mystery of '' the guitar setup''. … Knowing something about this gives some measure of protection against being bamboozled by guitar technicians. … I also have a fender telecaster deluxe, on which I have changed the original three piece bridge, for a gold-plated six piece bridge, and I think I have totally mucked up the setup on it. ….. it would have been a bonus if the issue of harmonics vs. string length was addressed.

      He's giving you the correct string height's in the video. It's best to have the string action gauge. I bought one on Amazon for like $2.00 when I ordered some other parts. The bridge can help you lower your strings but remember too much & they'll be too low.

      These were known as "fretless wonders" I had one in the 70's. Terrible quality and way heavy! Nearly 12 pounds! After 10 years on the road and three osteopaths later,I finally chopped it in for a Kramer Stagemaster,which still rocks!

      Terrible quality? LMAO! You know how many of those are still out there? A LOT. And they're worth a LOT, as well. I've got a '85 Kramer Baretta as well. I'd trade it in a heartbeat for the '71 Black Beauty I missed out on.

      For low action, the fretboard should be perfectly setup (Neck relief), the nut actions should be perfect and de frets should be leveled and dressed perfectly too otherwise you will get fret buzz.

      Its a Custom they all have that low action and ebony fretboard, my new Les Paul has nowhere near that low of action, they are awesome to play

    What is the measurement on the nut at the first fret?

    I have a slightly different Gibson spec for relief: 12 thou for bass, 10 thou for treble
    As to the tail piece height, if too high one will have tuning stability issues
