Your video was fantastic. You are a credit to the music industry. I have never in my 57 years on this planet had anyone teach like you do. Outstanding work. You preempt exactly what my next question was going to be with a expert answer. Exemplary camera work also.
I'm a bit speechless, what an amazing compliment. Thanks so much.
i agree fully
Thank you so much, I really appreciate that.
This guy is really good at explaining clearly and accurately. Just the right amounbt of detail. Brilliant.
Thank you so much, that's a wonderful comment and makes it worthwhile the effort it takes to make.
The part of video explaining to not allow the strings to touch the back end of the bridge was really useful to know. Cheers
It's a pleasure, thanks for watching and commenting.
MUST REMARK ALSO, THAT THE CLOSE-UP SHOTS ARE WORTH THEIR WEIGHT IN GOLD.......At my age I need all the help I can get......Merry Xmas, Howard, H6UK
Brilliant. I was just thinking it’s about time I either got my glasses prescription checked or bought some sort of magnifying glass thing for when I’m soldering and wiring up. I do think close ups are important to show what is really going. Thanks again.
That is the best and most accurate representation of the mechanical nuances of a tune-o-matic Nashville styled bridge. The close ups and time spent discussing the bridge and tail piece, as well as some of the alternate choices, is very thorough and leads well into the setup and intonation of this system. Fantastic.
shovington67 thank you so much for your kind comment, I’m very glad you took the time to comment, feedback like that makes it all worthwhile.
It was bloody fantastic 👏👌.
Wow, thanks. I'm so glad people like it.
Finally got my Epiphone E339 sounding just as I have always wanted! Thank you so much! It may have been in 2018 when you did this but we are still benefiting from your skill and ease of getting across the message that so many others have not!I could not agree more with the last post as to you being a credit to the industry! I sincerely hope you achieve everything you aim for..Dave
Thanks so much Dave, what a compliment. I can't believe I made this video that long ago. I'm going to be putting more time into my CZcams channel this year so hopefully I can keep helping people out.
I am building a DIY Les Paul style kit. This video sure helps explain a lot for me to use to set up my kit. Great explanation about the bridge. I thought at first you had 3 saddles backward, but you made sense of it. Now I need to check my bridge to see if the saddles are facing the same way. Thank you for this video and now, on to the full set up. Have a great day.
Thanks so much for leaving that comment, and I'm sure you'll find the full setup video useful. Good luck with the build and enjoy it. If you do put up any photos on Instagram or Facebook please tag or share with me, I'm always keen to see people's builds.
Amazingly clear description on how all this works. You thought of every question that could be asked about this topic. It could NOT have been explained any more clearly. THANKS!
Thank you, comments like that make it all worthwhile.
Best video of it's kind I've seen. So well explained, and filmed so you can really see what's going on.
Thanks Jon, this kind of comment makes all the effort worthwhile.
Perfectly explained! It’s my first time with an Epiphone SG and this helped a ton. Thank you!
It's my pleasure, enjoy.
Outstanding vid. Great explanation of the bridge and how it works. Very, very helpful. Best I've ever seen.
Don Lessnau thanks for your kind words, much appreciated.
Do you know is there anything you can do to sort the rattling buzzing retainer wire on the tunomatics.looks like a g string sort of size, seems a bit wasteful to chuck them due to that.or is swapping to using springs an option.
Sorry, for some reason I only just saw this comment. They are quite important to hold the screw in pace but if they are rattling I think they aren't engaged with the screw thread correctly. They may need a bit of bending. Also, if they aren't actually doing anything then maybe they could just come off?
Fantastic video, it's the first video I've seen that gives a full explanation of exactly why the individual parts have been engineered the way they have and the theory behind it.
Thanks for such a nice comment, hearing that makes the effort if making the video all worthwhile.
You are a shining example of why I love this new whole new universe that includes CZcams. I’m mostly a bass player guy, but I now understand more about the Gibson Bridge/Tailpiece relationship than I ever have in the last 40 years of causually wondering! Thanks you! (Sincerely, I’m not joking.)
Thank you so much for this very kind comment, that has definitely made my day.
What a fantastic video! I had my flying v set up recently which has a tune-o-matic bridge and this really helped me to understand how to tweak the action in future if need be
Thank you so much. It's always good to know how to make those tweaks yourself. I do love a flying v!
Most thorough explanation I’ve seen of the Tune O Matic. Great job!
Rex Mills thanks so much. I’ve been asked to do one on a floyd rose next. I’ll be making that alongside a new guitar I’m working on, so it’ll be a couple of months away - but always nice to know the effort is worth it. Thanks for commenting.
awesome, you did the right thing by explaining so extensively. You show many angles, functions, details. Awesome, best tutorial of this issue.
Thanks so much - I really appreciate that comment, thanks for taking the time to leave it.
You explain things a lot of people ignore. Well done. Your a good teacher. 😊
Thanks so much, that is so kind of you to say.
Amazing thank you!! 🙏This is exactly the video I needed, extremely well explained. Very detailed, but moves through each subject at a good pace - doesn't 'drag on' on like some explanations. Stellar work! 😊
Thank you so much for your kind words.
Thanks very much. I’m 56 and been playing since I was 13 and I never knew about avoiding your strings touching the back of the bridge. Totally transformed the playability and consistency. Great video, plain English, well explained thanks again
I'm so glad it has been helpful for you, thanks for letting me know.
To say I’m impressed with your presentation (probably entirety of your channel) would be a massive understatement. I’m seriously just blown away with how perfectly articulated/demonstrated this video is. Wow. Instant sub, like, comment, etc..all that good shit. Bravo, good sir. Absolutely stellar.
Wow. What a wonderful comment to wake up to this morning. Thank you so much.
@@DevilAndSons My pleasure. Top shelf, priceless content. Seriously, some of the best I’ve seen for guitar tech/maintenance. If not THE best.
@rferguson3 wow, thanks.
Thanks for this! I'm building a les paul special. This is exactly what I needed learned so much. Thanks again and subscribed.
It's a pleasure. Thanks for the sub and good luck with the build. If you put any photos on instagram or Facebook please do tag me I the comments (@devilandsons), I love seeing people's builds.
thanks for this! I just bought an SG and spent last night bummed out that the strings were dead and buzzing on the frets, once I really got into playing it. I watched this, learned the anatomy and mechanisms, then I put new strings on and made some pretty dramatic adjustments and it is "fixed". I was almost going to take it back, but it was just way off/ strings needed to be raised.
Excellent news. It's mad that the guitar came so badly set up but absolutely great that it's now what you want. Happy Strumming!
Excellent, thorough beginner-level explanation, pleasant to watch and listen to. Thank you most kindly!
Owen Scott thanks so much for leaving a comment, it’s always good to hear that one of my videos has been enjoyable/helpful. Cheers!
One of the best videos and explanation on bridge and tailpiece set up I've seen yet. Nice job!
Thanks so much. It makes me very happy knowing that it is a useful video.
Dude, this was awesome. Would love to see a full setup vid done by you.
Dave Ma thanks for the comment. I often tell people I will be making one soon, but I can actually say I’m filming it this week. However I have a few guitars to finish making so may not edit it for a few weeks. Stay tuned...
The set up video is now up: czcams.com/video/fvD-qsM3piQ/video.html
I mostly play my strats simple because i don't like how the bridges are set up on my Les Paul and SG. I never really took the time to understand them. But you've certainly shed a lot of light on that style of bridge.
Thank you so much. I actually much prefer a fixed strat style bridge to almost anything, but I'm coming around to playing with a floating bridge like a Floyd rose.
I have never in my 66 years on this planet commented on any video, nor have I read a more spot on accurate comment as Rowan's below. So a year on I though it is time to repost and confirm Rawan's comment as I couldn't say it any better:
" Your video was fantastic. You are a credit to the music industry. I have never in my 57 years on this planet had anyone teach like you do. Outstanding work. You preempt exactly what my next question was going to be with a expert answer. Exemplary camera work also."
Wow, thank you so much. I'm so honoured. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Hopefully I'll be making even more videos in the near future.
Another really helpful video. Your camera work, with those close ups, is excellent. Many thanks.
Thank you very much. I really try with these explanation videos to show as much as I possibly can.
Hey very informative video , Daniel! Thank you! Learned alot! Im American and my young daughter is going around the house with an English accent saying ..."its the Sad-dle....Adjust the Sad-dle......"
Relativity1 ha! That is brilliant, thanks for letting me know, so funny. I hope she ends up a guitar player with great set up skills! Teach them young!
You have the most amazing voice. i could listen to you for ever. I already know how a tune o matic bridge works, but you took it to another level. Thank you
Thanks so much. really appreciate you leaving a comment like this.
this guys voice made give up on video. fumwheel instead of thumbwheel? please
^^^^This guy's grammar is pretty is bad too. Please!
Absolutely Brilliant!!! Fantastic detail and narration. Great high def camera work also. I am a tech of 20 years and he taught me a couple of points for sure.
Thank you so much for commenting. I really appreciate such great feedback. 👍
What a great video. Such a fantastic, detailed, patient explanation of the tune-o-matic bridge. Fantastic. Subscribing.
Brian Jones thanks for such a great comment. I hope you find all the new videos coming soon as useful. Your comment and subscription is much appreciated.
excellent detailed video.thank you very much!
Stephen Craig it’s a pleasure, thanks for leaving a comment.
Pretty informative vid! I thought this was gonna be boring considering that it's a 20 minute video, but damn I was focused all the way through, keep it up! and I'm still waiting for the full setup haha, and I hope you elaborate more things on what could cause fret buzzes.
Honestly I’m surprised people last to the end, but I’m glad you did and thanks for leaving a comment, much appreciated. I am planning to have the set up video done by September (I recently moved workshop and everything is a bit of a mess, in boxes, or in the wrong place so causing a bit of delay in plans). Will definitely do it though, and mentioning string buzz is likely. Maybe I should make a whole video on that? Thanks again!
That'd be great! I'll wait and I look forward to it :)
Apoch thanks!
The full set up video is now up, you may find it useful: czcams.com/video/fvD-qsM3piQ/video.html
A very thorough review. Actually, one of the best on youtube.
Greg T thanks so much! Really appreciate you leaving a comment.
have a tune-o-matic bridge, was afraid touching it till saw this brilliant video, and I'm so appreciative for your afford explaining in the most clear and understandable way!... big thanks!!!
It's an absolute pleasure. Comments like your make it worthwhile.
Spot on explanation. The whole better resonance/sustain from a fully screwed down tail piece is something I have yet to see any proof of so I'm still doing a medium tension with thru-hole stringing. It may be another "tone-woods" debate that never gets anywhere.
I think you are very likely to be right about that. Thanks for commenting.
@@DevilAndSons wait, do you mean that piece that's held by the two pillers and the tension of the string because funny thing i was setting my bridge hight and i didn't think to loosen the strings so the pressure sorta pulled out one of the pillers, i was already gonna replace the strings anyway, so i would use some sorta wood glue to hold it back after i restring it soon, though a fully screwed tail in this case may not help since the whole puller was pulled but idk
Wow. The whole thing pulled out? Actually a bit if wood glue or super glue should hold it back, and perhaps screwing the whole tailpiece down low will mean it has less give and be less likely to pull out.
@@DevilAndSons you mean screw it like you did in the vid? i just finished watching and yeah i gotta agree it does put alot of tension on the tail piece if it's touching the base
ohh i didn't understood "screw it low" , now i get it you mean not as low to the point where it's touching the base
Thank you very much for this video ! you helped me a lot !
I found here, everything that I was looking for so long, great job !
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you ! : D
Pejter 1986 thanks for such a nice comment, I’m very glad it was helpful.
you welcome !
Brilliant video. This is the best explanation I have seen on CZcams and I have been looking at them all. Thanks for showing us this and I have just subscribed. Cheers mate.
Mike Flight thanks so much for such a nice comment, I really appreciate you taking the time to leave it. Hopefully I’ll have some more technical videos up soon.
Covers a lot of the detail I had to learn by trial and error. Very clear and understandable.
Charles Rablin thanks for leaving a comment, I’m glad it backs up your knowledge.
I have a tewwible wobble wif me fumwheels lately.......... Great video btw.
JohnnyRingo you should get that looked at.
@@DevilAndSons Indeed, can't argue with that. lol.
@@DevilAndSons Just so you know, I meant absolutely no disrespect with my original post. Your accent is cool, my friend.
JohnnyRingo thanks for taking the time to add that comment, I do appreciate it. I’m surprised how many comments there are in my accent, sone complimentary and others less so.

Very funny. I had to watch it again to pick that up.
this is one of the best videos on youtube. so carefully made. congrats!
Thank you so much for taking the time to comment, much appreciated.
Fantastic video. Thank you for making this. This is the best video on this topic I have found so far. ❤
That's so kind of you to say. Thanks for taking the time to comment
No offense, but I'm impressed you spend 20 minutes explaining possibly the simplest bridge ever. Fits on posts, adjust with thumb wheels and has screws under each saddle for intonation. Done, 10 seconds!
Ni offence taken. You'd be surprised the diversity in knowledge and confidence out there, these videos aren't for everyone but if you look through the comments you will see that for some people these types of videos are helpful. Also I am trying to explain the intricacies of elements such as the saddles to help people get the most of it. Anyway, glad you came by for 10 seconds at least ;)
@@DevilAndSons I stuck around for the whole thing. Yes, I did notice a lot of people got quite a bit out of it. Great job.
I'm not surprised at all. I own a repair and set up shop and I get quite a few, pretty decent players sometimes, a day for simple string changes! There seems to be a fear when adjusting anything on a guitar that people have, especially with the truss rod. While excellent videos like this may be bad for business but I still believe every guitar player should be able to do basic service to their instrument.
@@12south31 true, people should learn the basics, but if they don't at least there are people like you to help them.thanks for watching and commenting.
As a novice with a new chibson type 330 this is gold..
Thanks.
@johnnorris1983 thanks so much for adding that comment. Different people have different needs so great this suits you.
Very good tutorial. It covers all aspects of the tune-o-matic setup and some of its variants.
Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment
I watched about 10 videos on this subject, none explained the hardware as well, or had such good, closeups of the parts. Well done!
Thanks so much, that is very kind. I really try with all my videos to make things as visual and in depth as possible.
Thanks for taking the time to comment too, reading comments like that makes it all worthwhile.
I just got the latest Epiphone Les Paul studio and had no idea how to setup the bridge and how the saddle worked before watching this and hit a brick wall... Not anymore! Absolutely brilliant this video is! AbsoluteLy THE champion of guitar instruction. Most Ive learnt from any other source period.
Many thanks for sharing man, This Truly is the best ✌️,

Best video out there. Well explained and great video quality. The tune-o-matic doesn't seem so mysterious now.

Hi . I've been playing Les Paul Guitars for about 40 years , which is about how long I've been playing Guitar . I've learned a lot about Guitar Repair , such as Neck Adjustment , Pickup Installation , Setting Intonation , etc . But some of the details that you shared in this Video I never knew and I never thought about . I knew that the Saddle Nut Radius needs to match the Fretboard Radius , but I guess I've always had my Bridge in backwards . That explains why I always have a problem with my Intonation .
Thank you so much for making this Video . I hope you're doing well and staying safe . 😃
Thank you for taking the time to put in the time and effort to create this Video . I'm your newest Subscriber and now I'm going to go thru all of your Content to learn as much as I can . 🎸

Obviously from my Avatar you can see i'm primarily a Strat guy.
But I recently purchased a 2012 lefty Gibson LPJ Cherry Stain. It's a beautiful instrument and your video taught me some useful tips as I try to setup my LPJ to suit my own needs.
Thank you!
StratXIII thanks for commenting, that is great to hear. To be honest, I’m a stray guy too, my first electric was a squier strat which I still have and love, but I’d never knock a guitar with a tune-o-matic. Happy strumming with the new one.

I've had a project guitar for a couple of years now that I've always wanted to work on, but never quite had the courage to get into because I was afraid of making an irreversable mistake. It adds up that most videos on guitar setup aren't that great. Your videos on the other hand are perfect. That drawing of the saddle direction was so so good!
I are you planning on making videos about filing both nut and saddle slots? I recently bought an ABM ToM bridge and the saddles are not filed yet. I'd love to see an explanation from you on that as well.
Keep going with this, your channel is great!
Thanks so much for your kind words. I hope you do get around to your project guitar soon, it can be so rewarding (even making mistakes, learning from them, then correcting them). Saddles and nuts will be on my list of videos (which keeps growing) but I'm also trying to build a new website and make a while lot of new guitars before the end of the year so the videos may have to wait a bit, but stay tuned... one day those ones will happen.
Best & most helpful guide I’ve ever seen - thank you! 👏👏👏👏🙂

BRILLIANT I too would love to see you walk through a full set up - Les Paul & PRS custom 24 !!??
Thanks for the comment. I actually have a PRS SE in the workshop at the moment and I'll be filming a video about the bridge on that. Here it is czcams.com/video/fvD-qsM3piQ/video.html
Great video. About to get a Les Paul and was interested in how to set up bridge properly. Hopefully it arrives in a decent set up but I want to know how to adjust if needed.
