    Let me tell you about a tiny, yet powerful acoustic guitar amplifier. These amps have a very woody, transparent tone. They are made by AER in Germany and built like total tanks. I have also learned that Tommy Emmanuel has an artist edition!
    These amps are wonderfully compact, they travel incredibly well. They sound awesome and function great as an amp themselves, as a monitor, or as a way to run your signal to a larger sound board.
    The AER Amplifiers were featured in Acoustic Tuesday Episode #77 along with many more guitar geek discoveries.

    I own a Compact 60/3 and an attest that it is an amazing acoustic amp. FAR better than any offering from Boss, Roland, or others. The one thing I
    I've yet to hear about in any review, however, is people's use of the "Color" button which scoops the mids and boosts the highs. The plus is it gives great life to the tone but can lead to squealing feedback even with a soundhole cover.
    I asked Tommy Emmanuel about this in person and he said he doesn't use this feature, but mainly because his Maton guitars have the amazing AP5-Pro system installed, which is pretty much the best acoustic/electric pickup system you can get. Unfortunately, these systems are very difficult to install and are almost exclusively seen on Maton acoustics. I use the LR Baggs Anthem in a Martin 000-42 and it sounds great though my AER, but I find I need to use the Color feature to get things to sound "like an acoustic."
    To any AER users, do you use the Color feature? I'd love to hear what you have to say.

    • @mikaellavrell
      @mikaellavrell Před 4 lety +1

      I basically have the exact same setup as you with a Martin HD16RLSH with LR Baggs Anthem and I rarely use the Color button. It can sound sweet in its own way as an effect but I would rather use the built in EQ to have more options to shape the tone. I also use a T-Rex Soulmate Acoustic to tweak the tone so the Color function is pretty useless to me at the moment.

    • @virtualreality
      @virtualreality Před 2 lety

      I use my AER without the color-feature. My Ovation Elite has the OP-Pro-Preamp with a similar function (some kind of mid-scooped eq-curve). So I use my guitars eq-button and my AER is all flat without the color-button and I am really impressed by the sound you get from this combination!

    Goodmorning-
    Almost pulled the trigger on the AER 60-4 AMP. My question is if it’s possible to connect and guitar and microphone for vocals and listen to it all using a headset? This to not disturb other people or neighbors. Also a perfect way of listening to my mistakes since an amplifier is unforgiving!
    I realy hope this is possible.
    Now if one day I want to video myself with everything plugged in- what type (!) of mic do you recommend in front of the AER speaker for recording ditectly.
    Thanks again

    I purchased a Compact 60 mobile, i travel in a van, and find it hard to get enough time at plug sockets to recharge the battery.
    Can i buy a 12v converter for my van to charge while i drive?
    If yes . . . what do you recommend?

      @stein657 Před 3 lety

      Hi Matthew, thanks for buying the AER Compact Mobile. The recharging technology requires 220 Volt or 110 Volt, depending on the country. The amp will recharge while being connected to the mains, even while playing. The Compact Mobile will run on 12 Volt, but won’t recharge.

      The best thing I liked when performing with AER 60 is I can be loud enough for my likes... but the audience can hear very clear in the farthest seating areas and not be hammered with ear ringing tones. I always place the Amp on a mic stand somewhat behind me so i can hear it as well. Thus the close proximity to me I can enjoy my preferred volume. Never had anyone complained about volume.

  • @jamessidney2851
    @jamessidney2851 Před 4 lety +1

    I tried the AER 60 using my own guitar, a jazz archtop. I really wanted to like this amp but it wasn’t up to the job. I found it decidedly spanky. When pushed, it responded with that slightly out-of-control sibilance one associates with acoustic guitar players on singer-songwriter night at the open mic in the coffeehouse. Maybe that’s what you want? That’s what Tommy Emmanuel (as brilliant as he is) gets when he pushes this amp. Kind of spanky and harsh. For a jazz player with an archtop guitar who is looking for clarity and transparency without sacrificing body, and without the artificial-sounding, wacky brights on the upper end, you are better off with a Roland AC-60 or any model Hendricksen jazz amp. And that’s mostly because a Fender Twin Reverb is much too heavy to carry around, of course.

    • @zzcanasta
      @zzcanasta Před 4 lety

      I'd have to disagree. For years I've used my Compact 60/2 with various archtops as a solo guitarist and in combos and never found a problem. I've also used it with my Strat for both teaching and playing and found it well up to the task. These days I gig with a Larrivée OM-03 as part of a jazz/soul/pop duo, and again found that the AER delivers every time. I've tried various other amps, but always come back to the AER for its clarity and warmth. Maybe the problem you describe was down to the archtop rather than the amp?

    • @jamessidney2851
      @jamessidney2851 Před 4 lety

      I don’t know, maybe you are right. I play a 1954 Gibson ES-175. It has a single coil P-90. This is the guitar I was using to test the AER. An aside: my amp of preference is a Fender Twin Reverb. But I live in a New York apartment that involves several flights of stairs, so obviously that’s not going to work. I do get to use those big fender tube amps once in a while at venues that have them, and more often at commercial rehearsal studios. And I will be the first to admit they DO color the sound of my guitar, but in a way that I find complimentary and authentic. So when I moved to solid state amps I kind of decided I just wanted that thing that they call transparency. Like, no coloration from the amp AT ALL. Just a projection of the guitar’s acoustic qualities, plus the character of the pickup itself. That’s what I get from the now-discontinued Roland AC series of acoustic guitar amps (AC-33, AC-60), which are my favorite. My henricksen jazz-amp also does a pretty good job, but for flavor of sound, a sense of body, the Roland products are it for me. I haven’t heard other people rave about Roland stuff, so it very well may be just a thing between my ear and this particular guitar and these amps. I am glad you jumped in to defend your amp. The finer points of tambre and tone are so very subjective. AER may work better for most people, but for me and my ears, with MY axe, it wasn’t the ticket.

    • @zzcanasta
      @zzcanasta Před 4 lety

      @@jamessidney2851 Thanks for the response. I guess in the end it comes down to simple preference and the kind of sound you're looking for. I had a Roland AC-60 which I used for some years for teaching and doing small gigs, and really rated it as an amp. Because I also use an acoustic, I was always on the lookout for something that could accommodate both, and the AER fitted the bill.
      Stay safe, and keep playing.

      It's a fupl range amp, it is supposed to have fat lows and spanky highs, you just have to eq them out.

    I would never buy it because the price is an offence. My friend an amp guru disassembled it (actually the first version) to our surprise its power section was a good but cheap TDA chip that costs 10-15 $. There were really few features, one single Italian speaker. The speaker chamber was shallow and small with loose glue around From the front instead of some metal grill a sponge that wears quickly. Honestly it sounds very good but it is not worth a grand. I believe they achieved good balance of sound just by chance , accidentally it happened a good combination of elements. Its small speaker chamber absolutely should not produce good sound but it happens it does. As a luthier I came across an Ukrainian acoustic guitar that looked just like a piece of junk , a material for a fire place. When I played it I was shocked to the bottom, it sounded like a Martin. Just a coincidence of materials , resonance and mystery. I checked a new Blackstar Sonnet 120 , it's design is very classy and is feature rich. They also make one of 60 watts but I don't accept smaller speaker than 8 inch for acoustic. And last but not least THEY ALL LIE ABOUT POWER. They don't provide info about distortion and other factors . I have an East German vintage tube 10 Watt amplifier for clean sound, sort of hi fi legendary MV 3, two EL 84 and 12 Watt !! full range 12 inch speaker 97 dB efficient. It sounds twice the power of the 120 (?) Watt amp. The sound is like a razor clean AND PRESENT. The newest acoustic amps seem to sound compressed against that beast. My another (American) tube hi fi amp (same tubes) McGohan also 10 Watts produces the same big sound. They are great for fingerstyle.
