One thing that I think that gets overlooked is that the Mayans were remarkable astronomers, so the scene between the Priest and the Chief when the eclipse happened was a signal to tell the people that the event is a divine sign from the Gods that they are satisfied. It was all a political ploy to keep the masses in check in times of great strife.
