    I replaced the broken worm gear on my 1996 Explorer; however you DO NOT need to remove the speedometer needle and the circuit board to do it, which eliminates the need to re-calibrate the speedometer. You can use a small screwdriver and release the clips that hold the odometer motor from the back, rotate it slightly anti-clockwise, and simply pull it out. I bought the new replacement worm gear on Ebay for $5.84, free shipping. The new one is nylon instead of plactic, so it will last a lot longer. I used a small amount of Teflon grease on the worm gear before putting it back in.

    I had trouble getting the servo motor off,Found a fix pryed up on the odometer shaft and removed the idler gear and was able to install the worm gear on the servo motor shaft then replaced the idler gear and snaped the odometer shaft..All back together and working

    You dont have to pull the whole thing apart. The odometer motor twists out from the back and you can put the new gear on. Use 2 credit cards to gap the distance from the motor to the back of the new gear. By gaping it this way, the gear doesnt touch the speedometer back plate. It worked great for me.

    Good info and well-presented. Found this after researching why my odometer/trip odometer both are coming and going recently. I never opened up the cluster when I had it out replacing bulbs (another of which went out a couple of months later, of course lol). This gives me a far better understanding of how they're both driven (I'm used to my old 89 VW) and what has most likely failed. Too easy - Thanks!

    The gear is now available for about $10 from Amazon. It is now Dec. 2019. Yours is the first of 2 videos on the 95 to 97 Ford Ranger. Please show a video on actually placing the worm gear on the shaft and reassembling the entire gauge cluster, step by step. I don't think you need to take out the three screws on the front of the odometer, but not sure. Thanks. Good job.

    • @Kybucks10
      @Kybucks10  Před 6 lety

      Anthony Hardy the bulbs are size 194 from your local parts store. They are incredibly easy to change. They pop in and out no problem. Any of them that are a little difficult, just slip the appropriate sized socket over it to give you some leverage. I definitely recommend replacing them all while you already have your cluster out.

    • @Kybucks10
      @Kybucks10  Před 5 lety

      Earnest Smith you have to disassemble the odometer even further. I actually did that with mine because I put a junkyard unit back in my truck and wanted it to match my actual mileage. I didn’t make a video though because I didn’t want people to be dishonest and take miles off their vehicles. I will say, it’s possible. Just tedious.

    I did everything you said to do and taking apart and reapply, the odometer works well, but the only problem I'm having is when I go to start the car and the speed indicator moves up to 40 miles an hour even when I'm not driving it'll do this when the car is in park so now I don't know how fast I'm going, I mean I do, its just the indicator is not on the right setting, its a 95 Explorer and it uses this exact same instrument cluster

    For example, does a person just simply drop the worm gear down on the pin? Does it attach somewhere or just fits down on the pin? How does it mesh into the main gear? Maybe its easier than I think when I actually do it.

  • @TMOwen
    @TMOwen Před 8 lety +1

    Hey Daren. I just bought a 96 Ranger from someone on Craigslist. Hit half way home and realized the odometer was not working. Does replacing the worm gear on odometer update the mileage on my 96 Ranger? As in, if it is supposed to show and additional 20k miles, will it update on its own once the worm gear is replaced?

    • @Kybucks10
      @Kybucks10  Před 8 lety

      Unfortunately, it won't. It's a mechanically driven odometer, so the motor will always spin as long as the vehicle is moving, regardless if the worm gear is turning the odometer gears. There isn't a computer that memorized the mileage. There's no way of knowing what the actual mileage is at this point.

      I replaced mine a couple of weeks ago, Dec 26, 2020, and it worked for a little over 8 miles, then stopped working... It started working again a few miles later, for another 10 miles, and stopped working again...
