@@GabrielGonzalez-kb5by yes, but remember she has a child and is working Two jobs. This means she is never at home much and when she is, she is probably to tired to do anything else but rest. Then she gets up and does it all over again. I've been there. She needs some breathing room, some help from her church or close friends and family. I am not talking about money, but someone who can step in and do little things for her like grocery shop or watch her son while she does personal things. I am glad she called in and that Dave is doing the class for her. Her problem is more common, it's what everyday working people are dealing with, even married couples are having a hard time budgeting with rent being raised every year.
Man, I can hear in her voice the frustration! Sheâs the only caller Iâve heard on this show who actually has emotion and was super grateful when Dave offered to pay for her to do FPU.

I worked 2 & 3 jobs after my divorce to care for my kids. We do what we have to do. My kids are grown now. They are wonderful and I'm happy to just work one job now.
I am a man, when I was single I worked two minimum wage jobs barely making $27k a year for 3 years to survive until I was able to save up enough cash to start my own business. Life is hard when you're at the bottom but once you make it up into the top 10% it's so much easier.
Wow, I really feel for this gal. I lived in Decatur in 1999-2000 and had a little one-bedroom apartment for $550/ month. It was old and the carpet was awful, but it was safe and quiet. They've since bulldozed them and built fancy condos that cost $1800 or more. So I don't doubt this woman is struggling. If you're reading this Takisha, we're pulling for you!
$550 / Month 20 years ago is almost the exact same thing as $1,000 / month today. Inflation, salary adjustments, cost of living has doubled since the 90's.

perkol8ter From 2004 to 2007, I rented a small 1 bedroom apartment for $415 per month. The building is still there, but the rent has gone up about 50-75%. So it's still affordable, but much more expensive now than what I paid.
They never increased the rents on existing tenants as well.

Oh so you thought by putting a % amount that's bigger in comparison to the rent to increase number people who see your comment would agree more easy. 20% compared to 100% of something Is about a quarter of it which people understand is a lot but 200 on 1000 is not at all. On top of that if you went to look for cars, an apartment, big purchase like a washing machine and you had a budget for the purchase most of you would put a range. Everyones range is between a number and another. If you're renting your range tends to be 200-400 different.
If you ideally would rent for $1000, you'd also rent for $1200 even though you would like $1000, BUT you wouldn't rent for $1800. $1000 to $1800 is a big jump, $1200 is not. Same as $700-$1000 is not a big jump but $700-$1300 is. You guys would not blink at a $1000 washing machine vs a $1200 one if the features justify it, but somehow rent being $1000-$1200 is a big issue for someone making $70,000 a month which is $5,8333 before tax.
For a single mom that's about $4,400 after tax. How many of you make $4,400 a month and cannot afford $1200 rent? and if you cannot afford it, what's your debt that you voluntarily put yourself in? Predatory my rear. Brainwashed people.

@@mrfred1000 The amount you are allowed to rent increase per year is generally controlled, and it's usually around 2-3%. A rental increase of 20% is absolutely predatory, and may even be illegal. If she's bringing home $4400 a month, but also has to pay for healthcare (because America is a nightmare), childcare, food, water, electricity, car things, student loan debt, child things, and rent, it's going to be ever harder.
I live in a high cost of living area. $1200 a month for a single dweller 1 bedroom unit is unheard of. It's not even a reasonable expectation for a bachelor suite. I can afford more, but it's also because my costs per month are much lower than they would be for this single mother. Children are expensive.
SniperReady then sometimes wait to have kids and or find cheaper alternatives for school if you can. Donât buy $400 a month cars, some things are simpler than worth looking into

I gladly left Dallas because their rent was outrageous for a dump of an apartment. The rent was over $1,300, parking was $95 per month along with hidden fees. I really feel her on this. I live in Arkansas now and my rent is $750 for a nice 3 bedroom apartment. I couldnât believe it!

I'm a single mom with 2 kids and I work 2 jobs. That's been my life for 2 years. It's tiring and overwhelming but my 2nd job is food delivery where I can pick my own hours. There are a lot of food apps where you schedule yourself. It's the perfect part time job for single moms and college students.
So stay married. Pick better men to have kids with. Don't have kids until you can afford them.

I short sold my condo (long story, weird situation-trust there was no other way) in September, sold most of my furniture on CL, and moved into a tiny apartment above someoneâs garage. My commute went from 10 to 45 mins and there are other obvious downsides, but I am halfway to paying off my debt.

No you don't. My friend just got a 600 sq foot studio in a new building on the white side of Brookhaven for 900. Lenox Square is just half a mile up. She prob wants to live in the newest buildings with all the amenities for low rent. Not happening.
On the west side they are charging 900-1000 for the bare minimum! No amenities and in questionable neighborhoods

Garrick Ivey Found a nice gated complex in Duluth for 800 a month. Was shocked I actually found something that good and safe for that price. There are cheaper safer areas in GA away from the city but the jobs obviously pay less. My Job pays well so I need to be in the Gwinnett County Area.

Here in New York the rent absolutely outrageous!!! Itâs so expensive here and the sad part is you get such small space for the asking prices. I truly feel this young ladyâs pain and I truly hope she overcomes her struggles. Faith, pray, and some patience. It will get better.

Maybe you should contemplate moving to Arizona. I live in Phoenix, Arizona (Born & raised) and I know so many individuals who transitioned to Arizona from California. The cost of living in California, especially LA is so outrageous.
The cost of living in Arizona is pretty affordable and the job market is pretty stable and versatile. You should definitely do your research. But itâs a thought I would recommend you consider đ€

What's really sad is this is going on all over the place and even in different countries. I lived at this complex for almost 20 years I just got a rent renewal two months ago and it was over $100. Close to $150 I cannot afford this elderly I'm on a fixed income and this is awful what's going on they want to make people homeless.. I didn't do anything wrong I pay my rent all the time I don't smoke anything I don't do drugs I have no children they're grown I have no pets. I've kept my place nice neat and clean.. and guess what none of this matters... all Corporation Called Brookfield brought this property two years ago and I called them CROOKFIELD

The problem is, the harder times get, the more people want to spend to make it seem like it's not affecting them. We decide how much everything costs. The cost of rent goes up because people are willing to pay it. As long as people are unwilling to swallow their pride, and admit that they can't afford to live somewhere, prices are going to continue to increase.

I bought a house in the south 18 years ago. It was $112,000 for a 3/2 in a nice area. Now the same house is over $200,000. My salary has not gone up that much so there is no way I could buy a house in my area at this point. I feel for these people!

Renters have it hard in Georgia. My brother and his wife left and move to North Carolina because the cost of living was going through the roof.
We left Marietta, Georgia in 2006 because my husband couldn't buy us a house there. We came to Alabama and got a 4 bedroom house with a large yard on a golf course. I'm so glad that we left Marietta with our son years ago. We most likely wouldn't be able to afford rent where we were(They've built a stadium where we lived)

She is correct that rent is outrageous here in Atlanta and going up. She may have luck utilizing a realtor or private company that rents out rental homes, townhomes and condos. Private owners seem to charge way less than your standard corporate owned apartments. One thing I think some of the commenters below is missing is that she is a single mother. So Iâm thinking school district and safety is very important to her. She canât just hole up in a studio apt or a garage. She has another life to consider. Also the commute from your job to home and vice versa can ruin your mental health. Atlanta traffic is some of the worst nationwide. The commute she has to make especially in Alpharetta is not to be taken lightly.

Get a roommate to cut costs on rent and food. You can save if you really want to.
Jo-Ann MacNeill you have to move away from urban/expensive areas. Find cheap rent in a rural area. Sell everything you own if you have to to make it happen and start over from scratch. Itâs not easy. Itâs a very painful thing to do but also the most humbling thing youâll ever do. The longer commute will also be worth it.

I feel her pain so bad. I also have a huge student loan debt on me. The neighborhood I grew up in and currently live in (In Queens, NY) is now becoming gentrified. 1 BR apartments used to be around 1100 7-8 years ago, but now with all these rich transplants moving it, its skyrocketted to 1800-2000 for a 1 bedroom (my mom and i pay 1900, and she works a non-steady job) and its such a struggle every month especially because my neighborhood has always been for low-income immigrants but its a nice area, which is why these families are now moving in and driving up the rent. It's either pay my loans or risk getting kicked out of our home. Yes there are other cheaper neighborhoods, but like the lady in the video mentioned, these neighborhoods arent the safest.

mindyours ummm no tenants pay a portion of water and sewage. The bulk of all maintenance which includes the leaky roof, stove, pest control, etc. is taken on by the landlord. Most landlords donât own their property outright and pay half their revenue in mortgage payments.
@@a1ananda , even if Property Tax can be paid with one month rent (which isn't true). The landlord can charge whatever they want in rent - it's their property. You don't have to live there, if the rent is too high compared to the rest of the market nobody would live there.
During the Great Recession rent decreased, and I didn't see any renters protesting for the landlords.

I feel her pain. I am a nurse living in Austin and the cost of living has gone up so much while wages haven't. Keep striving sister and one day it will pay off.
As time goes by, this situation is likely to get worse. Wages are still stagnant, while housing caters to the more well-to-do, as do a lot of industries. The city and state get more taxes the higher real estate goes, so the poor or middle class get sidelined into rentals they can barely afford, or they start sharing houses and apartments with others. Everything is going up, not just housing. More people are just falling off the edge, as they cannot cope with the economy any more with stagnant wages for the past 15 years.

I'm not to far from you. I live in North Hollywood in a 2 bedroom (with a roommate who i'm lucky is trust worthy and responsible.) and we pay $1700 and that is considered a "bargain" here in the L.A. area. They just raised our rent which they do once a year which is usually $50 dollars, but this time they raised it $185 dollars for the reason being it's costing them more money to upkeep the building. The new tenets who come in now have to pay $2050 for a 2 bedroom, 1 bedrooms are $1800. Oh, and forget trying to buy a home in L.A area.That is even worse!

We rent a mobile home in Orange County $2,050 a month. Left a 2 bdrm apartment to move here, rent price almost the same but at lease no shared walls. We're stuck in So Cal for now, but when we get the chance to leave, we're outta here. No chance to get started owning a home in So Cal anymore.

The cost of housing has become out of control. Most people are paying half or more of their salary on rent. There needs to be more calls about landlord thieves.

That is why I tell everybody who can to buy instead of rent. With a fixed mortgage, your payments never go up. Sure you have taxes, maintenance, and insurance, but those go up slowly in most places, and certainly places where cheap housing is. That doesn't mean go out and buy the most expensive place you qualify for. A $100,000 home with 5% down will cost you around 650mth, certainly cheaper than most apartments. If you live in middle America, 100k is a decent home in a decent neighbor hood. Then you get equity after a period of time, tax breaks, and stability. Or you can keep paying increasing rents each month.

Correct. That's called "inflation." The cost of bread also goes up. And milk. And home values go up as well. Also....taxes go up.

This story really spoke to me. Rent kept increasing in my city, so I decided to buy my own home instead. The mortgage payments are far less than the rent I was paying and I'm on track to pay it off in 3 years. I'm rooting for you Takisha!

You can't raise rent more than 5 or 6% (depending upon location) as a landlord. To hear he is painting over mold (constructive eviction) and raising rent to such a degree is bewildering!

I'm a landlord and I have never raised $200 on a tenant. My goal is for them to stay. So my tenants rarely get a rent increase unless they've been with me for 3 yrs. Then I will raise it $100 and I'm in the Los Angeles area
Yah rent is going up like crazy in Toronto as well . To live in the city it's 2000$ for a one bedroom 10 years ago it was 1000$ . What can we do nothing unless we all stop renting and force price to go down đ€

Rent is pretty high everywhere.. Just 2 years ago someone bought a foreclosure across the street for $53k and did minor work to get it rent-able and now they charge $950/mo.

I lived in Atlanta for a year studying abroad. Rent was ridiculous. I payed 830 a month to live with a room mate. I was used to living on 700⏠for everything in Germany and suddenly I had to pay more than that in rent? That's just absurd. Couldn't have done it without my stipend and still ended up using all of my savings for that one year.
You can feel this one....doing everything right, still getting buried. Rent in this nation IS too high....its all about greed.

Depending on the circumstances I feel as though fun is necessary in a budget. Even when I was dirt poor I know how freeing and regenerative a little bit of fun can have on your psyche. I know the other side as well. I found cheap ways to have fun for the most part like red box, board games, park, etc. I also found ways to cook healthily while at a discount, but the fun was in learning to cook different styles and such.
My point being, I don't think I could of made it 3 years with absolute no fun. I've never been in a heap ton of debt (thank the Lord), but I think a little bit going toward a meal out ($10-15 a week) for a meal out or a movie to reward yourself for hard work to get out of debt is an investment in and of itself that is more than worth the price.
I remember giving myself $100/month and I didn't always really use all of it, but it was there in case I really needed a tiny break. I budgeted and every single dollar down to a T and fun was my budget insurance in case anything might go over etc. Now if you are just so deep you have no room to do anything whatsoever I understand. Use free entertainment. Just make sure you are taking care of fun, because burnout is real. You can only take so much and just as your body needs sleep after a while so does your psyche. Your body will shutdown without sleep and affect your health and so will not taking care of your mental health. So, remember to have fun responsibly. It's still important and doable.

One of the best and realistic advice from Dave is that people need to have a "period" of "no life" in order to save up tons of money OR pay down all of your debt. This "period" is a must. But this "period" is only temporary and short - usually 3-4 years only. It's better to do that sooner rather than later in life. To succeed in anything in life we have to make "sacrifices". If you can live with family or friends for no rent for 3-4 years is ideal because you can save TONS of money that way.
this is why you need to BUY instead of keep renting. In the meantime live where it is cheap and consider a room mate or 2. Every extra penny should be saved for down payment. Buy and be free from this mess.
I feel her pain... We've been trying to buy a, house for almost two years now but the market has skyrocketed and the competition for houses is crazy. People are selling homes they've lived in for a year for 40-50k more and getting it! We just can't get ahead.

Rent in Hawaii is so high too and goes up about once a year. The way the cost of living continues to increase, its no wonder we have a homelessness crisis here in Paradise. I totally feel for this woman though. Dave was compassionate but I don't know if going through FPU will actually address her problem. I hope it helps her though. I wish her the best.
Hawaii is an island, smack in the middle of the largest ocean on planet Earth. Rent being high is Supply-and-Demand....there is no land for all the demand. The median price of a home on Oahu, now, is ~$800,000. Yes, rent should be high in Hawaii. Homelessness is a product of Hawaii not producing anything. The Plantation Days are over. Hawaii produces only great weather, sun, and beaches. The tourist dollar, all that there is, does not trickle down to the average Joe. The homeless should be rounded up and moved to Texas, Mississippi, Mexico, or Thailand, where there is a much lower cost of living. Hawaii will become the island of well-off retirees in the future.

You were not' born believing what you said, when did you believe that and why.

I think there is something big going on here. Rent is going up on the east and the west coast because of overpopulation.
They are trying to move people towards the mid-west. This will segregate rich from poor. Also rent is so high that 2 or 3 people making average income might have to work from one family. I live in a small nice town in NJ. When I moved in 2015 rent was $1280 for one bedroom. Now a corporation bought the building and made my rent $1425 so far. The newly renovated ones in my building are going for $1700. In other words it's a mess.
Not everything is some massive conspiracy. Jeeze. Rent in general is a scam. You pay over and over and over and get nothing to keep. Youâre basically paying someoneâs mortgage. Get your income up somehow and/or decrease your expenses to a bare minimum, get/stay out of debt, and save up money buy housing in an affordable decent area outright. Problem solved. No more landlords can change your life from year to year asking for 200$ more per month for the same place. Only thing you fall mercy to after that is taxes. Even if property value increases significantly as they have been for a few years, going from 1700 to 1900 for example, is not that big a deal at that point.

Christine C I feel like she's wasting a lot of money. I have a mortgage and car payment that work out to the raised rent she'll have. I also have a larger student loan and a credit card balance. I can still find about $1000-1200 per month to work my snowball. I make about the same amount as she does and commute farther. (Gas isn't free, obviously.)
She does need need to budget better but the rent is still to high. 40k from one job then 30k with the other job is 70k before taxes, and insurance. To net $1,000 a week you need a 75k salary according to payroll guru. That does include insurance. That is just taxes. Even a single child is a nonstop expense. Now go look up the average rent in Alpharetta. If she did not have the student loan and budget better, things would be better for her. With all that being said, that is still to much money to give away for rent to keep a roof over your head. Your basic need. Healthcare and a roof. Where are we in America when we overcharge for the necessities? I believe that this woman can get through this.

The landlord isnât the issue though. Yeah, it sucks that rent is going up but the student loan is slamming her face to the curb and I didnât hear anything about child support which probably means she doesnât receive any.
Im a landlord also and this world is about profit and many have to adjust or come to the realization they will have to keep moving to find more affordable rent. Its like this all over the country.
In Virginia Beach Virginia at a city Council meeting a resident spoke up and said I came out of retirement because I had to pay higher taxes for my property. I know work two jobs because the taxes keep going up there are only so many hours in a week to work and you keep raising taxes. How are we supposed to afford to live in our homes ? To which the city Council member replied get a third job. It is disgusting to see the lack of empathy and greed taking place in our society forcing people to work three jobs just to eat and sleep. I say fire every single politician who doesnât work out a plan to lower your taxes, although this is an unrelated issue the common denominator is greed.

I live there too. $1725 for a 1 bedroom built in the 50's in San Jose and that is considered on the cheaper end. They are starting to renovate some of the units which will now start at $2200 for a 1 bedroom. I wish my rent was $1000!

Atlanta is still considered an affodrable place to live for someone in tech/service job. she doesn't live in a metro that's considered outrageously overpriced, and that's good for her. But it's still hard to meet, even at $70,000 and a single mom. Really though, it's that student loan.

Rent is outrageous. Black women have to work 2 or 3 jobs jyst to hold down the fort because most black men are not helping or doing their part and $100 a month is not doing your part.

Increasing rent amounts are the reason people become homeless. Sure you have to pay repairs and taxes, insurance and mortgage when you own, but eventually that mortgage is paid off. When renting the landlord increases rent to cover his expenses. I own my home snd am retired. I couldnt afford rent.
Wow I felt her pain. I have a salary and my property taxes keep soaring and I have a lot of debt and I too am frustrated. Lord, help! But I am cutting up cards, closing accounts, and praying, and will soon appeal these taxes. Hope this helps relieve some burden. And praying for this woman also.

Rent here is $700.00 to $1,000.00 something and we don't even have a washer/dryer in any of the units nor a play ground for the kids in the complete nor a gym in the complex. If we did have those things and they were always nice then I could understand the cost of higher rent.

Awesome call, 20% rent increase over a year is not reasonable. Is not a secret how affordable housing is becoming scarce, especially in the South. That been said, you're paying to live on someone's property so you have no say in that. You're a hard worker, keep your head up and keep grinding.

In Christendom, historically, the charging of any interest (no matter how small) was considered usury and strictly forbidden. In addition, the money supply was strictly controlled by the government (kings) and religious authorities ensured those who made money from simple having money were looked down upon.
Move to Arizona problem solved. My rent is only $600 including utilities. I make 10,000 pre tax and live like a broke college student. I am able to save $5000/month to invest.
Alpharetta is the MOST affluent city in Georgia and her salaries would be very comparable if not equal in other parts of the state like Warner Robins, Columbus, Savannah, Augusta, Valdosta, Athens etc. She could have moved somewhere other than Alpharetta if her concern was getting robbed. I'm guessing she's stuck to being identified with Alpharetta.
