HUGE Organ Crescendo | Hauptwerk - Nancy Cathedral Organ

- When you have so many organ stops to choose from, it's always fun to try out a HUGE crescendo - from the quietest flute sounds all the way to FULL ORGAN! The Grabowski Sample Set from Nancy Cathedral is an amazing instrument with so many different tonal colours. This is my improvised demonstration showing you how I would create a crescendo effect.
For those who want to know, the melody is a simple pentatonic tune in D-Flat major - one of my favourite keys!
In a future video, I will go on to explain why I chose this order of stops for my crescendo and how you can recreate this sound on any organ (assuming it's big enough!)

Good to see you are safe after all the terrible news of the floods in western Germany.
We were thankfully spared the worst of the rains here in the Westerwald. Villages and towns nearby have been completely devastated by the floods though.
WoW! The Celeste voice is incredible!
I wouldn't leave my room if I have this hefty 4 manual console and sound system setup 😅 thank you for sharing this. So nice hearing you play.
The dynamics are pretty impressive. You'd need an equally impressive speaker set up to reproduce that faithfully too. This Hauptwerk setup must be a dream come true Fraser.
Thanks Fraser for this amazing and breathtaking crescendo !
You're the best 😎 !!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Magnificent! BRAVO!
Thrilling 😊 Really great - wonderful seamless build and fade away. Is it not just amazing what we can do in software now - hearing this on a real organ will of course always be without compare, but just a few short years ago we were limited to our fun (but less thrilling) dry little instruments for our living rooms. Bravo!!! (And D flat... my brain hurts - you are a master!)
Can’t beat Db! Key of the Gods according to Wagner!😂
@Jerrymartin79 You mean the Gummi Orgel? 😇😂
@@orgelhase haha! you know it!!!!!
Loved it! Very smooth!
Hello Fraser, it's always a pleasure to hear you play the organ in Nancy Cathedral that I have the chance to listen to on the spot. Thank you and maybe see you soon in Nancy Best regards Marc
Sehr schön Fraser! - Vielen Dank!!!
Fraser, I hope that you and your family are safe having seen the devastating floods, R.I.P for all those that have lost their lives in this epic tragedy, my best wishes from the UK.
Thank you - we were spared the chaos of the flooding - it’s very close though - only half an hour away. We know some people involved - very sad indeed.
Tolle Improvisation und eine sehr eindrucksvolle Demonstration dieses tollen Sample Sets. Vielen Dank 🙂
I love the amount of music and demonstrations you're putting out! Kinda miss the random chatting though..,
Plenty of that coming up again soon! I’ve had to endure a week of silence - a mouth full of ulcers has kept me quiet!🙊
@@FraserGartshore Ooo very excited! Sorry to hear about that!
Beautifully done Fraser! Your playing is certainly a treat for the ears! The progressions sound like something Genesis would have played in the 70s. Bravo!
An authentic improvisation in the French manner. Thanks, Felix. I have Germany in my prayers.
Who’s Felix?!
This a good , friendly flood of music ! Nice picture of your stopboard! Go on with the job !
I loved the fantasy on O Danny Boy!!
Not really - just a pentatonic theme in Db!
Thank you. I enjoyed this immensely. 😀
Awesome and splendorous. Well played!!!
Great stuff! Love the Celeste + 32‘ at the end. Of course anything else before that, too 😀
Just beautiful! Immersive sound. Can you tell me what computer setup do You have? I can see it’s an iMac, but what configuration? What is Your processor? Are You loading all available audio channels or just few? I’m asking because this sample set is very demanding for computer power, and I’m curious what a beast of machine You have to run it smoothly :) Thanks for Your videos!
Thank you! I explained all this in an earlier "Hauptwerk Project" video - but here's a brief summary for you - my iMac is a 2017 5K imac running on an i5 processor and (upgraded) 64BG RAM. Hauptwerk is installed on/runs from an external Thunderbolt drive. Audio is dealt with via an external interface. That's it! Due to RAM limitations(!) I only have 6 of the 8 possible Nancy Organ channels loaded. The system works perfectly - I have never had any problems with polyphony etc. It doesn't have to be an iMac Pro running 256GB RAM (although that WOULD be nice!)...
@@FraserGartshoreThank You for Your response! :)
Ich wollt ich könnt so spielen ... ich liebe diese Orgelmusik ... weiter so ... ich bin ein Fan von Dir 🤗
Very nice, Fraser. Many thanks for showing us what this organ can do.
But I'm SHOCKED that you didn't bring on the Septième! Hahaha😀
I’ll save that for some Litaize!😂
@@FraserGartshore I've only learned his "Prélude et Danse Fugée" - a "quirky" piece (especially rhythmically!), but great fun to play. Litaize is an interesting composer.... 👍
awesome!
Amazing!! I can enjoy this even more now with my new headphones :D my kind of old stereo finally doesn't do its job properly anymore and now I was with 10€ earbuds for some while, really terrible 😒
But thanks for this video I just tested the ones that I ordered
Hope they didn’t explode!😂
Nice organ with very deep 32' pedal voices. Still missing a few chamade stops, these superlative horizontal trumpets that blows you out of your socks. I can recommend the sample set of the Marcussen organ in the St. Laurens church in Rotterdam... 85 stops with a lot of reed stops including a handfull of chamades !
Beautiful playing and registration! Your fingers sure do know what they’re doing.
Is there a way to request a video?
Sure! Ask away!
@@FraserGartshore Glory Glory from Piping Hot at the Organ on this sample set, with a camera also pointed to the feet of possible.
If you’re taking requests Fraser I reckon you could probably outdo Jordi Franch Parella’s version of Zadok the Priest that is on CZcams.

I’d sign up on Patreon if you did that.😀👍
I read somewhere that Chopin taught by starting with "all black keys" scales, not the C major. (Don't know if this is true but it sounds cute.)
It makes perfect sense to start with the flat keys - working from F around the circle of fifths - the fingering is more logical that way! I mentioned that in a video years ago - maybe someone remembers which one!
@@FraserGartshore Having started playing the organ recently I found B major sits excellently under the feet
I was intrigued by the activity on the top right of the your monitor - presumably a reflection of some light source behind your head. Didn't detract from the listening experience, just curious.
Amazing, as always. But I digress. If I remember correctly you are in an area South of Bonn? I hope that you, your wife, and friends are all safe from the terrible rain and flooding that is happening in that area. Do take care and thank you for all of the wonderful music and commentary.
Amazing sound!! How do you get those sounds into the organ? Do you need a computer or it is ok to have a Roland VL 1010 for example? I do not know how to import sounds from the internet to my digital piano. It would be amazing learning it...
Have a great day!
It's all controlled by the amazing software "Hauptwerk" - the organ console is just a MIDI controller!
👍 The sound recording is fantastic...Is the sound coming from those tiny speakers I see...or is it recorded directly from the PC or whatever?
The recording is done internally. I may also have tweaked it just a little bit… don’t tell anyone!
@@FraserGartshore ---ok...thanks lol
Amazing improv and the sampleset is sounding great! However on such a huge organ you would never pull out as many stops irl as that because thats what i did once and i was told it was too much, and I agree. Because I usually played a smaller organ i pulled out all the stops and it was fine but one huge organs the sound is just overbearing if you pull out nearly every stop
Could you please play for me “The Lord Is My Light And My Salvation” by Frances Allitsen. I love to sing this piece!
Hello Gartshore do you remember me criticizing you for your boogie woogie music in church. An organist friend of mine that I told about you went to watch your videos especially the video demonstration of the hauptwerk organ Nancy and said he likes him very much. He already knows hauptwerk and he too is buying what is needed to play hauptwerk which is a nice expense between a good PC, monitor speakers and more all the rest. This friend asked me what you use to change registers so quickly with your right foot apart from the Novation Launchpad. You can tell me so I refer to my dear friend who has this curiosity. Thanks .
Hello again! I installed professional organ foot and thumb pistons to change registrations. I don’t have any launchpads - just “real” pistons! I have a video (Hauptwerk playlist) demonstrating the new console.
Wunderbar! Oh, how you clearly are a 'D Flat Major' man! A truly glorious, inspirational improvisation that fully exploits the amazing tonal resources of this great French beast. Mind you . . . when the new work at Marienstatt Abbey is complete, that will be a Rieger worthy of another massive 'crescendo and diminuendo' from Herr Gartshore! Maybe we can tempt you to explore C Sharp Minor . . . for the contrast in temperament!
O come on now - why not Db minor?! Much more exotic. C# minor is way too common!
Mr. Gerthshore, What hymn is this called and where can I find it? Thanks 🙂
It’s not a hymn, it’s an improvised piece for the video.
👍💯
I was really hoping for the Voix Celeste for the A major at 7:39! Hope all’s well, long time no speak…
(Apart from the mouth impediment, obviously!)
Haha! Surely you mean the B-double flat - let’s stick to the Db key family! Couldn’t bring myself to add the Grand Tierce or Septieme for the final crashing chords - they’re just not my cup of tea for this kind of waffling around. More for your Litaize and all that snappy jazz!😬
There will be an explanatory episode soon covering the choice and order of stops. Once I can talk again without risking biting chunks out of my swollen tongue… you did ask!🤪
Shouldn’t this have been called “HUGE crescendo/decrescendo”? Or maybe I’m nitpicking.
Didn't fit on the Thumbnail image! 😂
