Photography Tips - Negative Space in Photography

- Learning how to use negative space in photography took me a while when I was starting out as a photographer and I get asked about it a lot so we made this photography video to explain. Negative space can enhance a photo and give it peace. It also helps the viewer know where to look and what the image is all about in a way that's more gentle and subtle than leading lines, thirds etc. I'm not saying they're wrong because there are many ways to achieve the same objective, negative space is just one way and as the photographer it's your choice how you put an image together.

I had to watch to the very end, I knew that bloody red balloon had to have a pay off. As usual, you delivered it beautifully Mike.
Thanks for hanging in there Justin Jones . Glad you enjoyed it
I learned two things from this video: How to use negative space, and to never tie something distracting to your wrist when you photograph! :-)
:-) DickyTracy
You are, by far, the most pleasant, understandable, and enjoyable photographer on the internet, Mike!
So down to earth, positive, and you explain everything so clearly and normally...
Thanks you so much for your efforts in bringing us all these great videos so that we can become better artists with our cameras :)
Absolutely agree with this.
WOW - thank you ALL for your kind comments. Really, truly appreciate it.
The lonely bench photo with "I Love You" balloon is just stunning! Just above any "guru" level...
We use Radio Mics. The little black thing clipped to my shirt is the mic, there's a transmitter in my pocket and a receiver on the video camera connected through an XLR socket
I meant to completely ignore it and never mention it until the end but you're right. It was a pain and my resolve broke :-/
Negative Space adds impact and peace to a composition - how can it possibly do both?
Mike great info but don't you think that while negative space can help to create impact in a image, sometimes a small like the balloon or even occasionally a larger object needs to be there for balance as well?
Alistair
Great video Mike - really liked the shot at the end.
Nice one....great video
Another great video lesson Mike. Thanks for sharing.
Epic fight with a red balloon! Just great! :)
that last picture i was imagining the exact image and thinking that would look really good when i first saw the sky and the bench. Wow it really is :)
Mike, I've been watching your videos for the last few weeks. Got to say I think they are the best I've seen on youtube thus far. I consider myself to be pretty well-versed in photography, but these videos have gotten me to think twice about my approach. I also love how easy your videos are to watch. I truly enjoy them and look forward to learning more!
The pic of the boats is AMAZING, don't let them tell you otherwise.
Hi Mike (& co), I've spent this weekend going through almost all your videos and I've learnt a lot from the last few hours than I have reading books and magazines over the last year. Thank you for time and effort putting these together, I personally very appreciative of that. I look forward to seeing more of your videos
thank you +Dean Dodds glad it made a difference, please share our videos, so we can make more free videos! - MELISSA ( for Mike )
Thank God there was a point to that bloody balloon. Nice video Mike, as always.
Mike Browne I wanna thank you for making these videos and sharing your knowledge on photography, its really helping me understand my camera and photography more. Thank you.
Yes that would be a good option. I didn't do it because i didn't want to get into post production in this video as well as composition. I'll do an HDR video sometime soon.
Thanks Mike for all the amazing videos. If there is ever a topic I want to learn about your videos are always my first "Go to" to get answers. I thoroughly enjoy your videos.
I really liked your technique of "standing in" your photograph and talking to the viewer.
Mr. Browne you demonstrate an immeasurable amount of patience as evidenced by the fact you didn't let that annoying balloon go after the first 2 minutes. I have not patience as evidenced by the fact that I wanted to jump through the screen and pop it! Awesome video though, many thanks!
That damn balloon was so annoying Mike. I'm not surprised you walked away and left it lol :D
The most clear and practical examples of this compositional concept I've seen. And I loved the use of the balloon. You have the gift of storytelling, Mike. :)
Another great video, thanks!

Great video and I *really* appreciate you uploading all these. I must admit, I was literally laughing out loud when you were fighting the balloon off! Thanks for the laugh, it's really cheered me up.
Thank you. I don't have Much photography from Aus but I do have a video from when I was Whale watching - even manages a couple of nice pics... It'll be on here sometime in the next few weeks...
Clear, concise and makes life, that bit easier. Great stuff, Mike.

That guy in the red hoodie right at the start being all "Who the hell are you talking with, mate!?"

Fantastic loved it ❤️❤️ Definitely worth the wait as the shot with the balloon🎈 was great 👍
Thank you Cierra. Please help us spread the word by 'liking' 'G+ing', sharing on Facebook etc
Near the end you said that it's good to introduce something man made into a dull scene. I'd just like to say that it's not necessarily so. The fact that there's nothing man made in a dull scene makes Andreas Gursky's "The Rhine II" so captivating.
Yet another brilliant talk through! Loved the balloon!
I do like your videos Mike. There're well presented and explained, and I like your way of simplifying things.
Thank you Ali AlHamadah Please help me make more videos by sharing them on forums etc with other photographers.

'Minimalist' we used to call that. The balloon is very dada, makes me smile.
Brilliant tutorial as always, with the same sense of humour 😃 That balloon was giving me an anxiety attack but I knew there was a point to putting up with it annoying you LOL
Nice episode and one of the best video closing photo idea I've seen so far!
Good stuff and well done for persevering with the balloon that has a mind of its own! Always good to learn from your knowledge.
Brilliant videos mate! Very inspiring and educational, every time I watch one of your videos I wanna go out and shoot something. Thankyou so much for all your efforts and tutorials here in land of You Tube it is very much appreciated. Look forward to the next vid. Cheers Kenny
This is great!!! LOL... i was giggling the whole time watching you fight with that balloon!!!! I once bought 6 of those balloons to do a photoshoot of my daughter, so i know how it feels!!!! ;)
Binge watching your videos. Learning so much. Thanks!
Thanks HB, Please share them around with other photographers, it helps me make more of them... MIKE :-)
New to photography and sometimes struggle to find things to go and photograph. This negative space style photography, is a great perspective to inject some creativity into the brain!
I love it Scott and am something of a negative space junkie. If you're struggling to find things to photograph, practise really looking at shapes, patterns, light and shade. Don't just walk about hoping to find somethings. Another way is to go see things that inspire and interest you. If you stay somewhere you know well you won't notice the good stuff all around you... MIKE
Mike Browne ye it's a really cool take on photography. Got into this hobby around november last year. The other day I came across pictures I thought were good when I first had my camera... I went back to shoot the same subjects the other week, as my 'eye' for composition has come a long way since!
I really enjoy the war memorial sites and subjects. The other subjects im really keen to get photographing is all the old welsh castles dotted around wales!
When I look at subjects now, I think how would it look to the left, drop lower with a wide angle. From above. From straight on but slightly just off the floor. Closer in, further back, from behind etc. Really enjoying the camera right now.
Shame I didn't come across your channel sooner. I have been binge watching your videos, the car motion video is brilliant mike!
Thank you for the video's and effort you put in to making these for us.
Brilliant Mike, I was finding the subject confusing, but it makes a lot more sense now!
Great to hear Kirk - lots more on my website too.... www.photographycourses.biz/courses/online-photography-course
Thank you very much (mike) you're my ideal ... Actually you give me the motivation to continue ...After all the disappointments ...really, You're wonderful.
all your tutorials are excellent thanks again
Very helpful, Mike! Thanks!
Hi, Mike. I must say I have learnt a lot from your videos. Made me rethink a lot of concepts concerning photography. Never has it come to my mind empty space can be that useful for photo composition. Thank you so much for the quality work you make.
Thank you Salah - Melissa pp Mike
This is a great lesson on distractions. That bloody balloon is distracting the hell out of me. But watching you battle with it is kind of entertaining. haha
Fantastic job at simplifying the concept of negative space. Oh, and the baloon idea was brilliant!
I luv this guy :) always great videos!
Informative video, wonderfully done. And in true British tradition, the balloon just wasn't mentioned! Subtle Britannia!
Thanks Rob - MIKE :-)
Great video!Love it
Ok I just finnished the video and now you are the master at brilliant! now I know why you were carring that darn ballon the whole time. I had and Idea you were incorporating it in a photo, but the final result is just AMAZING.
great vid as usual , thanks.
Brilliant video! I am loving the picture with the two boats, looks stunning. Also the way you set up your video camera was amazing. I had the feeling that you were walking inside an finished still picture.
Thanks. please help me make more vids like it by sharing them around with other photographers - MIKE :-)
Another helpful video, thank you !
Very well presented as usual Mike, loved how you used the ballon in the end shot...negative space it hard to get right when starting out. We all love to get close with are zooms and fancy lenses, but stepping back really works better with some shots and knowing when to use it is the real trick. Great stuff, keep them coming...Marcus
Like always Mike. Excellent!.
What amazing vid like señor Mike ....brilliant !!!!!!!!! Many thanks
I kept watching until the end because of the balloon. Great lesson for photography and film making!
Very nice video, thank you so much for uploading it!
superb tutorial Mike, thanks a lot.
This was really useful, i gonna go out and try out some negative space photography c: You should defiantly make more tutorials like this. An awesome picture by the way :D
Brilliant as always
Awesome video, I learned a new composition technique.
So enjoying your lessons❤️
some of you guys didn't understand why there was a balloon.. i got it but just can't explain.. picture speaks.. nice Mr. Mike. the balloon has its story in this video.
Thanks +Joey R it's a kind of British sense of humour thing. Happy you 'got it' - MIKE
Thanks :-) We're working trough captioning to get it accurate but it can take up to 2 hours a film so it's slow going getting through them all. Well get there though and glad it made you laugh...
Thank you:)
Lymington Quay in Hampshire.
