Photography Tip - Shoot Professional Looking Head Shots At Home
Vložit
- čas přidán 21. 09. 2013
- Need a head shot or portrait for your driving license, work profile of web page? Model Abbie's agent asked her for some new head shots which needed to be clear representations of Abbie with out make up or cool looks. In this case a head shot is a look at the blank canvas of the model without loads of make up or styling.
As with all photography the key is to think about what you're doing and use the building blocks of photography to make it come together. Block 1 would be to find great light. Block 2 is to work out the composition, 3 what focal length do you need to achieve that etc...
Join us for a look at how to shoot low tech head shots in great light almost regardless of the location. Get comfy - this is a longer one...

When Abby held the tortoise she had the best natural smile. I know models are not always supposed to smile but she really showed some personality at that moment.
Abbie has tons of that +Gordon Lejeune - MIKE :-)
nice to watch a pro who knows what they are doing and not interested in the usual look look at me and here to help you.great videos and very informative
Thank you ian b If you like it please share it around because this will help me make more free videos :-)
Nothing better than an informative video with a bit of humour thrown in. Great work Mike.
Thank you David! -Melissa pp Mike
These are some of the best photography how to videos on CZcams.
Thank you Dave Saunders
I agree mikes videos have been a massive help for me
Thanks guys :-)
Thanks Abbie. We did and it's always fun working with you..
Thank you - making people feel at ease is all part of it. I'm going to make some films about that area of photography soon.
Mike, You're my favorite CZcams Photographer. You're fun to watch, practical, and you make it easy to understand. Thanks for all that you do.
thanks Mike and thanks for Abbies humor and your trusty camera assistant. Nice job teaching.=)
Brilliant tutorial!!! Abby looked fab!
Thanks for making this
Exactly the help I was hoping to find on CZcams! Excellent tutorial. I appreciate the "what not to do's" at the end. Thank you!
Mike , excellent tutorials ! Your presentation is realistic not all stuffy (laid back) not to technical as in making the tutorials boring. Looking forward to seeing and learning new ideals and techniques. Thanks !
That's a gorgeous little log shed
Great pointers and very well explained. Thank you very much.
Thank you. The lens I use most is a Nikon 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 AF-S DX variable aperture kit lens but it works great.
I agree. Photography is about being in control of light, lens and camera to get the image YOU want - not the one you let the camera take for you.
Thank you. I thought I'd answered Kevin - apologies if I missed it. Colour or black and white is a creative choice for you the photographer - or if you're doing it professionally a choice for your client. It's a bit like saying it's better to have a grey car than a blue or yellow one. There's no rule - if you like B&W shoot it. The great thing is you can have both with digital photography.
Thank you for all tutorials !
Excellent. I just wanted to say, after digging through CZcams for tutorials on photography, I have found your vids to be the most practical, pleasant, and helpful. Keep 'em up, and hope you are on the mend as well.
You also involve and respect your model, assistant in this tutorial. They are not like just statutes, or with bored expression who don't know what's going on :)
That's was a great fact, she is born 7 hours after her. the model :) I like to know such facts, they are amazing.
Great video again, I like way you explain and the way you end it
You sir make photography fun n a joy to keep exceling after ty!! btw luv how you emancipate out in personality :)
Thank you Dave Jr
Thank you. It's a matter of choice for the person being photographed or the photographer.
Awesome teachings yes I will take on board and really enjoy the challenges.
You treat Abby with much respect and took some awesome photos of her.
Sorry you feel it came across that way Miley... MIKE :-/
Some absolute gems in there Mike. Another informative video with quality and humour!
Thanks Paul Humphries
Excellent as usual. And having a keen sense of humor that you definitely have, can also put your subject as ease too I believe
.
Terrific video; Mike. It's all about attention to detail for me and following a routine, or flow to avoid silly oversights, Thanks
mike you are just so good to watch and learn THANKS
Your explanations are making so much sense in the www available options. I mean there are so many videos on youtube and on the internet but your videos make so much sense.
Thank you Syed Abbas Moosvi
Great Mike, what a fun video. I'm glad you are feeling better mate. I really like the comic element in this video, it breaks down the seriousness of what has just been explained.
Good presentation. Not too techie with some humor thrown in and you have a winner that sticks with you. Thanks Mike
Thanks for demos! I'll have to watch again to remember enough. Wow! So much at once.
Yes watch and watch until it's like second nature 🤓
Very practical and easy solutions. Great info. Thanks for taking the time to post this.
thank you! please do share it too so we can make more. dragonfist25 - Melissa pp Mike
Whilst the wide aperture does make a lovely soft background the 50mm shot I took a shorter lens distorts the face a bit when in close and the field of view isn't narrow enough to exclude the clutter either side.
Such useful tips, Mike. Thanks a lot!
I really love your videos. They have great tips and advice. I used some the techniques in this video today to get some good shots. Keep up the good work helping us out

I use auto focus set to single point but move the point around the frame so it's in the place I where want the camera to focus.
Best training! thank you!
That was actually great advice, thanks a lot. I'm no pro nor do i pretend to be, but this is certainly helpful :D

Sorry if I missed your comment Kevin. Colour or black and white is a creative choice for you the photographer - or if you're doing it professionally a choice for your client. It's a bit like saying it's better to have a grey car than a blue or yellow one. There's no rule - if you like B&W shoot it. The great thing is you can have both with digital photography.

Good to see you guys back fit n healthy again
Thanks for the quick response Mike. I'll simply bring both lenses and see which look i like best. And i'll figure out the aperture that will give me enough depth of field to get all the faces in focus. Thanks again!
No worries Noordstede take your time and think your way through the shot. My 7 Building Blocks of Photography 7 week course is all about this kind of thing because you have to be able to think like a photographer in order to be a photographer - www.photographycourses.biz/7_building_blocks_of_photography.html

Great tute Mike!
Just found your video and I love them . Learn so much and enjoy trying them out 😀
Cool Joe taz6 good to know they're helping. Please help me make more of them by sharing them around photography forums etc and telling everyone about them. Cheers...
Hmmm I'll think on it. I'm not into posing people myself because i like to photograph the person being themselves rather than something I've turned them into. I don't shoot studio portraiture for this reason and only occasionally shoot portraits at all. And they are mostly in the subjects own environment. I chat and talk with them and take photos as they reveal emotions, happiness quirkiness etc. I'll think on it though. Thanks for the idea...
LOVE your videos!... just found you today, and I find the ones I've watched very entertaining and informative! Cheers
thank you jimmy! please do share our video and subscribe so we can make more! - Melissa pp Mike
