What a beautiful copy of Anne of Green Gables! I read a couple books by LM Montgomery over the prior month, Blue Castle and The Story Girl. Both were enjoyable.

Such a lovely video - you have such a gift for describing books with such eloquence and warmth and enthusiasm. I now want to reread everything you mentioned I’ve already read, and rush out and get the ones I haven’t! Your story about Angela Thirkell and Ann Bridge made me giggle! And I agree with you about Kilmeny (very odd!), and about the Hobbit versus Lord of the Rings. I would like to give Lord of the Rings another chance sometime, but did find it rather hard-going, especially the last book. I think my favourite part is the very beginning with Bilbo’s birthday party!

So good to see you back Miranda and I thoroughly enjoyed your book choices for the Spring. I vividly remember reading of the death of Cecily Watkins-Pitchford (BB's wife) in the 1970s and becoming very afraid to walk in the fields when farmers were spraying, a fear which has never left me and whenever I see fields being sprayed I think of him and her tragic death but also of his wonderful writing. Thank you for a great list of reads and re-reads. Have a wonderful week, Teresa 🌷📚🌷

More lovely recommendations, thank you. I also found Kilmeny of the Orchard a rather strange story, somehow much more dated than any of the Anne or Emily books, which really stand the test of time. Thanks to another of your book reviews I now have a gorgeous second-hand copy of I Capture the Castle, it's a Folio Society edition, in a slipcase and is as new but was a bargain price. I now have The Enchanted April in my ABE cart and have added a few more to my own wish list!

I really like your style of sharing books. It's the perfect amount of information for me to decide if a book sounds like a good fit for me. Many on CZcams are giving inaccurate descriptions of books and it makes me wonder if they have actually read them. You're descriptions on the classics I've loved were spot on! I also thought your Bronte collection video is amazing! That copy of Jane Eyre is just stunning ❤️ I've now subscribed
When you were sharing about Montgomery's other book. Something funny struck me; in real life she took a story she'd written for a magazine and fleshed it out. In the Anne books that's exactly the opposite of what Diana did to Anne's story when she entered the baking powder contest. Anyhow, I found it amusing ☺️

Whilst I like to read at least once a day, my reading mojo has waned a tad over the last few months, I’ve spent more time ordering fabric than books! Dear Miranda, please read Elizabeth von Arnim's "The adventures of Elizabeth on Ruegen" and especially "Elizabeth and her German garden" which is the ultimate spring book...! She describes autobiographically her time in the garden of her house in Pomerania and it is beyond charming. Also, looking into her life story and her literary connections is fascinating. She was a very unusual woman, especially for the time. Much love and thank you for this wonderful video.🌸🌸🌸

I have read Elizabeth and Her German Garden, and it’s a favourite of mine too, although for me The Enchanted April is a better spring read, as it’s set pretty much all in Spring, and some of my favourite bits from German Garden are in the winter! She did indeed have a fascinating life, and I’ve always enjoyed the Forster connection 💫

Your channel is so charming, I can't wait to see what you will come up with next...! I wonder if you considered making a video about films related to the Brontës, for instance "To walk invisible" which seems to strive for realism... Your visit at the Brontë museum was a delight. Last night I just finished "Miss Prettigrew Lives for a Day". I enjoyed the heck out of that book! Thank you so much for the suggestion. Another one from you that I have on hold at the library is "A City of Bells" which I am picking up tomorrow. I am just so grateful to have found you. I love reading but find good books difficult to find, and we seem to have a very similar taste. Thanks to you I now have a pile to read through. Thank you for sharing all of your wonderful wealth of book love with us!

I loved your recommendations Miranda. I really want to read BB's Little Grey Men and also The Darling Buds of May. Incidentally, it was my birthday 2 weeks ago and my son bought me 3 lovely books recommended by you in previous podcasts : The Country Diaries, A Bite of the Apple and Dear Reader - all were on my wish list!

I'm so glad you included "Enchanted April." You have such a beautiful copy. I'm not one to own more than one copy of a particular book, but for one of my all time favorites, like this one, I'm definitely going to have to search for a more beautiful copy. 😊

Lovely to see you back and I really enjoyed your recommendations, some real favourites of mine in there too, Enchanted April and The Hobbit, which I particularly love. I agree LOTR is harder going, though I have read all three volumes several times, but my heart really belongs to Bilbo, and his enchanting Hobbit Hole X

Thank you for this lovely video! I love Illyrian Spring and that is such a good point about the cross-generational friendship in the book. I've been blessed with many older friends, too, and find the friendships so life-giving! That's so funny about Mrs. Rivers! I had no idea. Gosh, Angela. So snarky! The Little Grey Men sounds great. I found Kilmeny of the Orchard odd, too. It may be worth a re-listen or re-read just for those nature passages though.

I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Thank you! Yes, I had a good giggle when I read that about Angela Thirkell; she really couldn’t stand her by the sound of it!!! Xxx

So excited to see you back, Miranda! Hope you're feeling much better :D Loved your recommendations for spring! I especially love The Enchanted April, The Darling Buds of May, The Wind in the Willows, and Anne of Green Gables. Really looking forward to finally getting to A Room With a View, Smoky-House, Sweet Bean Paste and Illyrian Spring. Thank you for sharing some non-fiction picks, too. I'm always looking for non-fiction seasonal reads. Many hugs! xoxo :D

What a coincidence, I just finished reading "A Room with a View" by Em Forster as part of my resolution to read more classic books and I thought it was really good fun! The characters were so vivid to me and I could imagine contemporary versions of them all. I imagined the Emersons as those Northerners you always seem to meet when you're on holiday, who are good natured enough but to someone from London who would prefer to not chat to strangers over breakfast, are just a bit too much. The hotel with the Cockney land lady, I imagined as one of those hotels they have in places like Benidorm were the decor is in union jacks with framed pictures of the Queen on the walls, a full English Breakfast is served every morning and a Sunday doesn't pass without a roast dinner. Miss Lavish would be a part of the "liberal elite" the type who constantly talks about her gap year travelling around Thailand and how woke she is but is secretly afraid of poor people and wishes they would leave East London so it was more "safe" and so on and so on ... I really loved the book and would recommend!
