Meet The Family Keeping 2000-Year-Old Swat Wood Carving Art Alive In Pakistan | Still Standing

- Swat wood carving was once a thriving craft in Swat Valley in Pakistan. The artistry dates back 2,000 years to the Buddhist period of the Gandhara region. But many shops shut down when the Taliban occupied the region in 2007. The Mustaan family fled Swat and established a new store in Lahore.
Editor's note: A previous version of this video stated that Swati carving dates back 2,000 years in Pakistan. The video also said Zarshal was one of the few authentic wood-carving shops left. We’ve corrected the mistakes, and added more details about the origins of the art. We apologize for the errors.

Meet The Family Keeping 2000-Year-Old Wood Carving Art Alive In Pakistan | Still Standing
My father who is now 63 years old is still wood carving, a skill/technique handed down from his father..I am proud to say he is one of the best in the Philippines.
Being one of the best in the Philippines is no small feat. As we say here in the States, give him his flowers now.
Pakistanis are really hard-working peoples
God Bless Pakistan & its peoples 🇵🇰
Its heart warming to see old traditions and practices being kept alive.
Love lighthouses 🤗
🐬
Me too. It doesn't really matter what era it is, you could create this if you want to.
@@2_thumbs_up_baby YOu will love my channel then lol
@@javierpacheco8234 It's quite therapeutic I have over the years added things that are traditional or dim lantern that relaxes me and grounds me. What is something traditional from your culture?
Business Insider should do a little more Research. Wood carving is alive and well and it is a multi-billion industry in Pakistan. There is one city known as Chiniot where hundreds of small woodcarving business are established. So thousands of families are associated with such wood carving businesses around Pakistan.
This report is specifically about woodcarvers of swat.
Sales have no doubt declined due to these pieces being very expensive for a common user but the is still well and truly alive in some parts of the Pakistan.
Three years ago, we bought carved furniture for our home in Rawalpindi and it came from Peshawar because they had the factory in Peshawar.
@@basitali9583 please read the title again. They are talking about whole Pakistan not of Swat only. Also this business is not going down anytime soon. People in Pakistan only preferred wood based furniture for most of the household. So how this business is shrinking. Actually it is thriving.
May be it's what they're trying to say. These people are still working to keep the art alive. "Still Standing" as in these arts date back to thousands of years
Same here in Bangladesh actually.
A lot of people prefer carved designs on beds, almirah, tables etc but most furnitures in our home are quite modern.
Fully agree. It gives the impression that it's a dying art. Rather it continues to flourish not only in Swat, but throughout Pakistan.
Also the point about the patterns having references to ancient Buddhism has been exaggerated to make it more appealing to the global audience, and to try and distance it from any Islamic influence. In my opinion Business Insider have provided a rather biased viewpoint of carved artwork that is somewhat disconnected from the reality today in Pakistan, disappointed.
As a woodworking enthusiast, I find the puckering hollow sound of wood to be oddly therapeutic. No matter the culture, you can always tell how good the craftsman is based on how the wood 'sings'. Like with a musician, the clearer, smoother, more rhythmic the flow transition is the better. Great appreciation for these artists.
This does look like hard work with no option for mistakes
I live in city named Saharanpur in India. 20% population does the same work. We do export worldwide from the City.
I'm from Hyderabad, i purchased all my furniture from saharanpur.

Dang, they need to figure out how to get online to sell those internationally.
Even for 1k+ shipping costs, people in USA would likely still pay for those if the base cost is only like 1k.
Since this area is mostly Taliban controlled, buying this means funding the Taliban
Unfortunately, factories with machines can probably start appearing afterwards and undercut them to oblivion.
@@vikvu3172 Seems like you didnt hear the narrator well. The area they are in now is Lahore and its not control by anyone but the Pakistani govt. Even the area they left, Swat, has been cleared of any Taliban by the Pakistani military. Nowehere in Pakistan, is there any control of Taliban.

Fun fact: Wood carved pieces which are incorporated into furniture are considered a luxury. Those furniture are the most expensive in Pakistan.
oh wow I'm so surprised I though plain wood would be more luxurious
I love their work and, as a person living in the USA, wonder how I can get a carving without going to Swat.
Some of my friends have taken them to USA, Would love to help you if I can, I also used traditional wooden sofa's and tables for my office in Pakistan
I made a similar comment. They need to export to USA and Europe. There is a demand for it
They are selling it internationally..

In india, just 10 years back these shops used to be everywhere. Where they do carving works on beds headboard, doors , windows etc. They still do business and still exist with thriving business. But unlike earlier, they only do these carving on some special projects Nd requests now days, earlier this used to be the only way they did things. Many poor carpenter still do this, who cant afford tools. And some do these by choice, cause they take pride in their art
2000 years back there was no Pakistan. That said, these are remarkable pieces of art.
Exactly
2000 years back there was no India either 🤷🏽 Just separate kingdoms and colonies.
@@abdulmateen400 bro bharata vs still there...
@@abdulmateen400 that's not necessarily the case. Historically regions were used rather than countries. The area of most of modern day India has been known as a region for thousands of years. Their woodworking skills are amazing...so's their hair!! I wish my hair was that thick and healthy. 😊
In my village in lower Himalayas, we still have old vacant homes with these type of wood art...But now that craft has been lost here and the homes which have these are just sitting there while no one lives in them....
wow what an amazing skill they learned and mastered for years and they keep an old tradition ofmaking beautiful woodwork alive. i love it and wish them the best!
It is really fascinating and those intricated design tells the sincere dedication of the artist on a long drawn traditional artisan. Hats off to their family.🙏🏻❤️
Wood carving is an amazing art traditionally made by hand that is being forgotten due to high commercial demand and machine production!!! I am a second generation professional wood carver trying to keep that tradition!!! I recently started a CZcams channel to share this great art!!!
It's good to see videos that inform us of such traditions!!!🙂
I wish you the best of luck. Same i wish more people did this. In today's world not many appreciate this art.
All the best.

Stunning work.
Wood Carver: It's a dangerous job, I've injured myself 3 or 4 times..
Also Wood Carver: Carves while holding wood with bare feet and a razor sharp chisel...
Thats how most people work here in Pakistan, with very little protection\safety, even the people who work on electricity and wires dont wear protections like rubber, boots, etc
Yea its pretty unsafe and dangerous but thats how it works here

It's terrible how these people get used people by these carvings and sell them around here for way more I know of a company near here art meno that buys hardwood furniture from Pakistan and India and sells it here for 20 $30,000 these people can make a killing here I sell little pieces of artwork and carved that take me about 2 hours for $300 I sell hardwood tables for over a thousand that are way simpler than anything these guys put out
Wood carvings are present everywhere in world and is thriving too... !!
This is an art which cannot die even when forced to.

It makes me cry when I think about all the traditions we lost. We really got rid of craftsmanship for minimalist modernism.
Hm this is nice
2000 year art work? Guys gandharan art is mix of greek-buddhist art but the wood work you show is very much different from gandharan artwork, look at 3:03 this type of curved arch was not present during gandharan period, this is much like mix of mughal-persian-gandharan inspired designs.
beautiful beautiful and thank u for showing the right map
Beautiful pieces, well worth the price.
Amazing artistry excellent
Meanwhile people are spending ungodly amounts of money on NFTs. Can’t help but love the human race.
