Ido Portal: Movement

  • Ido Portal has spent the past few decades honing a physical credo and method that's now practiced by thousands of people all over the world - from office workers, to former CrossFitters, to NBA players, to the ever-controversial UFC titan Conor McGregor. Known as The Ido Portal Method, or simply "movement," his approach purports to take the "most potent" parts from a range of physical disciplines by shedding the dogmas that often accompany them. As he puts it: "I want the contents, not the container."

    Lex, I know ido is a very hard person to interview due his schedule. But now that your questions and outlooks on life have evolved more so since this here podcast 8 yrs ago. It would be a dream come true for myself if you were to have him on your podcast once again. I say this as a long term student of idos and daily practitioner. And a daily listener of the lex fridman podcast. Love your work and g’day from Australia.

    "Injuries are a certainty. They are not a probability. ... They are also required."
    Ido Portal cites Nassim Taleb. His concept, Antifragility, provides a proactive response patterns within stressful, painful or dangerous circumstances. Ido practices this philosophy in his movement and life.
    Regarding injury, Ido Portal rejects the concept of rest. He recommends work in place of rest. He cautions not just to work through the pain. But to work with the pain.

    • @lexfridman
      @lexfridman  Před 10 lety +11

      The concept of antifragility is fascinating. I personally tend to focus on avoiding injury but the idea of growing from injury is an even more powerful one. I'm not sure how grounded it is in reality. I would like to see more studies on actual athletic performance and recovery rates.

      I guess this explains quite a lot why Ido can be quite intolerable, he is obsessed by a work mentality and seems to be quite lacking in an ability to let his hair down. I find the contrast between him and someone like Wim Hof quite interesting, Wim being far more accessible and simple in his methodology, but also clearly providing a method and path to antifragility, probably even more so than Ido. As someone who had ME/CFS for 20 years rest and recovery is an art form in and of itself, as is being able to take breaks from everything, removing oneself from all mental attachments and going and having a good time.

    That final quote, it's nice and pretty, no sorry, I meant it's pretty disturbing: it doesn't matter if you lose your wife or your family? You will be along with the gods? So, if this is supposed to apply to movement and movement culture, it's just a selfish egotistic pursuit. It's not about bettering onself for the benefit of all humanity and sharing knowledge, it's about healing your wounded ego or pride at whatever cost. And what for? To feel all noble and strong ? If you can't keep and prioritise your family, and the person you made vows to, your strength and your physicality amount to nothing.

    A podcast to bring peace to the middle east
    hey lex I follow your podcast and I am going to make my own podcast with the goal to bring peace to the middle east. I am from Israel I see my country deteriorating and going backward. our leaders are corrupted, our news is filled with propaganda, the critical infrastructure is collapsing or corrupted and it seems like no one care.
    But I care. I care for my people the Jewish people, I care for the Palestine people, I care for the children born to a grim future here, I care for our neighbouring countries. I live here, I was born here and I want a good future to the middle East.
    I am not interested in politics I am into truths and science. 2 years ago I decided to go the polymath road for the rest of my life. So it is fitting for a polymath to be able to have high quality discussion across science disciplines. I want to create a science podcast similar to yours, but instead of asking at the end "what is the meaning of life" I would ask "what do you think will bring peace to Israel and our region the middle East" or variation of that.
    I truly believe that 100s of long from discussions about each guest speciality and ending with advice to the middle East. slowly but surely can change our region for the better.
    I am learning Arabic for this purpose. If you see this I would love your help and advice on how to kick-start this life project.
