  • Lyrics:
    Escoutez, tous gentilz Galloys,
La victoire du noble roy Françoys.
    Et orrez, si bien escoutez,
Des coups ruez de tous costez.
    Phiffres, soufflez,Frappez.
    Tambours toujours!
    Avanturiers, bons compagnons,
    Ensemble croisez vos bastons,
    Bendez soudain, gentilz Gascons,
    Nobles, sautez dens les arçons,
La lance au poing hardiz et promptz,
    Comme lyons!
    Haquebutiers, faictes voz sons!
    Armes bouclez, frisques mignons,
    Donnez dedans! Frappez dedans!
    Alarme, alarme.
    Soyez hardiz, en joye mis.
    Chascun s'asaisonne,
    La fleur de lys,
    Fleur de hault pris,
    Y est en personne.
    Suivez Françoys,
    Le roys Françoys,
    Suivez la couronne!
    Sonnez trompetes et clarons,
    Pour resjouyr les compagnons.
    Fan frere le le fan,
    Fan fan feyne,
    Fa ri ra ri ra,
    A l'estandart,
    Tost avan,
    Boutez selle,
    gens d'armes à cheval,
    Frere le le lan.
    Bruyez, tonnez,
    Bombardes et canons,
    Tonnez gros courtaux et faulcons,
    Pour secourir les compaignons.
    Von pa ti pa toc,
Ta ri ra ri ra ri ra reyne,
    Pon, pon, pon, pon,
    Courage, courage,
    Donnez des horions.
    Chipe, chope, torche, lorgne,
    Pa ti pa toc,
    Tricque, trac zin zin,
    Tue! à mort; serre,
    Courage prenez,
    Frapez, tuez.
    Gentilz gallans, soyez vaillans,
    Frapez dessus, ruez dessus,
    Fers émoluz, chiques dessus,
    Alarme, alarme!
Ils sont confuz, its sont perduz,
    Ils monstrent les talons.
    Escampe toute frelore,
    La tintelore,
    Ilz sont deffaictz.
    Victoire au noble roy Françoys,
    Escampe toute frelore bigot.
Composed by Clément Janequin, "La Guerre", from "The King's Singers, Madrigal History Tour, The France".

The greatest choral recording ever made. I had the pleasure of seeing them do this in person in 1984 and the whole front row was nearly spit on. I've heard this thousands of times since then, and I am more amazed every time.

Still waiting to hear their equal for this song. Got to hear this group in the early 80's when this video was made. Even better in person!

The first time I heard this was 20 years ago in college. We were tripping on acid and this pianist I know put it on, and it blew my f**king mind!

i get chills in multiple parts of this song! i've heard more "recent" lineups do this song, but i still have a special place in my heart in this lineup's perfomance.

These "mistakes" are because the song was written in Old French, at which time spelling was different, there were no accents and grammar was non-standardized.

Where did you find the sheet music? I thought I ordered it, but instead received "La Guerre de Renty" by Janequin and LeJeune, which is a completely different piece. Any help is appreciated! Merci!

I love this piece, but could someone please help me? I want to lead a discussion in my French conversation class about French Renaissance music, and this is one of the pieces I want to use. Does anyone know what paintings are shown during this segment of the documentary, or how I can find that out? I have tried googling "Battle of Marignano" or "Bataille de Marignan," and I get different paintings. I want to print and distribute images of each of the instruments of music and war described in this song, to give myself and fellow students as full an understanding of the lyrics as possible. Thank you.
    Yo hablo espanol tambien,
et un peu de francais, si vous voulais que je traduis mon question.
