7 Urban Legends We Believed for Way Too Long

  • Ways to save Aeris, fix cartridges, get Lara's clothes off and find Bigfoots in San Andreas are just some of the video game urban legends we believed when we were kids, back when bigger kids could convince us they were true because they had uncles who worked at Nintendo. Take a watch, share the urban legends you believed for way too long, and subscribe for a video like this every Thursday: www.tinyurl.com/SubToOxbox
History will remember 1996 as the year that gave us Dolly the cloned sheep, Tupac Shakur album All Eyez On Me, the launch of the first Tomb Raider game and, a few days after that, the first time someone wondered if they could take Lara Croft's clothes off. Spoiler: you couldn't.
Rumours spread in playground whispers of the holy grail of a secret Tomb Raider nude cheat: an arcane sequence of button presses that would whip those adventuring hotpants off faster than Lara on laundry day.
It didn't help that a fake nude cheat was published in nineties gaming mags as an April Fool's Day joke, spreading yet more unverifiable misinformation.
Even further back in the mists of time, when videogames came on cartridges, they would occasionally freeze or crash. Being tiny children with no concept of how games were produced, how cartridges worked, what a cartridge was, or how to put our shoes on properly, we instantly knew how to fix a duff cartridge: blow on the little metal bits inside to remove the bad juju or dust or whatever.
Despite this being universally acknowledged as truth by anyone who owned a cartridge-based system, it turns out in the cold light of 2017 that, the moisture in your breath could actually corrode and contaminate the connectors that allowed your console to read cartridges.
In instances where you'd blown on a cartridge and it had started working again, what most likely happened was apparently just the action of taking the cartridge out of the machine and putting it back in again setting things right. Next you'll be telling me Smarties didn't come in different flavours according to their colour.
That's to say nothing of tales of Minecraft's resident ghost Herobrine, how to unlock the precious gore in Mortal Kombat on the SNES, or how to save nice nurse Lisa Garland from her fate in Silent Hill.

The tomb raider thing is semi-real, if you had a fake copy of the game you could make her naked. I was friends with this kid from Thailand and all his PS1 games were just burnt CD-roms, I mean the kid had "Thrill Kill" before it became a wu tang clan game and that confused the hell out of me. Anyway he sticks in tomb raider and enters the code clothes come off/become skin coloured. So for years people have said it's fake and it's sort of been gas lighting me, I confirmed with himit was not official and a fan made patch.. So yeah real/fake it was possible

Glad to find someone else mentioning this. If memory serves, Lisa was murdered by Doctor Kaufmann for learning too much about the cult and his white claudia side business. The Lisa Harry meets is another manifestation of Alessa's psyche like every other monster in the game. Because Lisa was friendly and caring towards Alessa, she came back as an ordinary sane human, until she learned about her own true nature anyway. Lisa got the one-up on Kauffman in the good ending, though.

Edit: I already found some information I forgot about which makes my idea less solid, Lisa was addicted to PTV (which is _made_ from White Claudia, forgot that too.) herself, which is probably why she was trusted around Alessa in the first place.

@@MHurley21 Maibe I'm mixing this with Spiderman 2099's story but. Wasn't Lisa get her drugs given once she starts working with Alesa? So that way she can't quit her job or she wouldn't be able to get white Claudia from Kauffman and Dahlia. In the videotape she keeps saying about the wounds that disgust her and make her throw up and later on adds, "I need drugs"
Besides, in the intro cutscene of silent hill, the one with the music before the menu, Lisa is seen arguing with Kauffman and walking away while he is trying to hold her back. Maybe you are right and she dumped the drugs and wanted to quit and talk to the police about what was going on in the basement of the hospital, making Kauffman scared and choosing to murder her and keep his secrets safe.

A nice vid, though you neglected to mention a few things:
    * The "Ambulance Ending" as a separate myth from saving Lisa
    * Nintendo being responsible for the "blowing on cartridges" idea. Back when the NES first launched, there was an unfortunate rare instance of Nintendo QC fail brought about by a combination of the rush and Nintendo having to redesign the FamiCom to look like a VCR to get American retailers to actually stock it: Several units in the original 1985 wave shipped with defective pin 72-pin connectors (an untried component developed for the redesign. My best guess as to why Nintendo changed the connector in the first placewould be: to frustrate bootleggers). When people called and complained about their games not working reliably, Nintendo's customer service initially blamed the problem on dusty cartridge contacts and advised people to blow them clean, which most people did with their mouths since compressed air cans (the _proper_ tool for blowing dust out of electronics) weren't as common around the house at the time.
** By the way, if you're going to blow dust out with your mouth. swallow as much of the moisture in your mouth as possible and keep your mouth distant from the object so that remaining moisture can dissipate.

When I was a kid in the '80s and got a Sega Master System, the first time a cartridge failed I remember we (my Dad and Uncle and myself) tried the puff of air method. Then, both being engineers (my uncle yes, an actual NASA rocket engineer) it just devolved into them trying different sh*t. When woes continued we actually ended up calling Sega and they said, "Use a pencil eraser on the contacts."
I still do that to this day. Gets 'em squeaky clean, and you can do it on the contacts in the system slot itself.
Drawback: When you get a cartridge shipped f*cked from the factory it never occurred to anyone to just return it for a new one - instead we'd spend literally hours trying to make it work. It wasn't until years later it hit me that we could have gone back to Toys 'R Us and got our money back, at least, or a different game.

My uncle actually did work at activision. I remember vividly me working on something during a get together that I now recognize as the beginnings of Destiny.
Getting. Video games for my birthday and Christmas from him was awesome

That's smart but I bet you didn't do that as a kid. I'm not sure those canisters even existed back then.

lifeincolour09 those canisters have existed since canisters existed.... Compressed air is used for more than just blowing dust out of electronics.

They say Mew's still under the truck to this day. And you can get the Ice Key in Banjo Kazooie. And the Triforce in Ocarina of Time.

One of my favorite urban legends was in The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. Apparently if you levitated high enough into the sky you'd see dragons flying around. We only had to wait 2 games later for actual dragons to be in the game.

I think the "get dust out of cartridge" thing is a natural instinct, because I did that with my DS cartridges (although I shook rather than blew on them) without any external knowledge.
