7 Times It Was the Darkest Possible Timeline

  • Sauron smashing the Shire, George Washington going power mad, and Luke Skywalker turning to the dark side: bleak alternative timelines like these give us a gloomy glimpse of how things would go if it weren’t for videogame heroes always succeeding at solving everyone's problems. Consider these times it was the darkest possible timeline and subscribe for a video like this every Thursday!
    The Assassin’s Creed 3 DLC called The Tyranny of King Washington, for instance, imagined a grim alternate history in which George Washington realises that the only problem with being president is that you have to worry about stupid democratic elections. Far better to just crown yourself king instead.
    On the other hand if you finish the canonical do-gooder nonsense of The Lord of the Rings: Conquest main campaign, you unlocked the Rise of Sauron campaign, which asked “what if Frodo didn’t destroy the ring, and instead hung onto it and then Sauron’s forces conquered the entirety of Middle-earth?" A deeply grim alternative timeline in which Hobbit corpses are burned on Ent bonfires, is the answer.
    There there was the decidedly non-canon DLC alternative timeline of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, in which all the good guys turn bad or die at the hand of Darkest Timeline Starkiller.
    That's not to mention the darkest timeline in which Resident Evil's Leon Kennedy is circle-strafed to death by a bunch of masked Umbrella goons, played by you and your friends in Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City. For shame. Now who will save the day in Resident Evil 6?

    So fun fact about the LotR: Conquest one -- when you do take control of Sauron you can absolutely still die. I took control of him then immediately got killed by an eagle... There was no option to play as him again so I had to finish the game with a rando orc. Easily one of the funniest gaming moments I remember.

    For the Dragon Age Darkest Timeline, there’s a second darkest possible timeline. You drink the blood, adventure onward to become the amazing Grey Warden... and at the very last battle of the game glitch out so bad your save file becomes corrupt and you lose 60 hours of gameplay. It gets even darker when you contact EA Support.

    • @spacejesus6581
      @spacejesus6581 Před 3 lety +3

      I hated how the templars were an option in that and the game pretends time travel doesn't exist if you choose the templars
      I also love how:
      You kill Alistair's, one of the most important characters, mother, with no other dialogue or anything
      Time travel isn't a thing at all
      There are no time travel rifts in Redcliff
      The only thing in that quest that matters is being fast with the bad combat and finding evidence on that one Templar
      Seriously, the Templars should not be an option compared to the Mages, which has Alistair's mother survive, you can get a cameo from Connor, you see the actual result of Corypheus' plot instead of just a small paper plan, you get Samus as a secondary villain (admittedly not as good as the elven girl in terms of character arc)...the Mages are definitely the way to go, and that's ignoring the entire idea of getting help
      You need more power to assault the Breech, your option are to greatly boost your power to break through...or weaken the fade itself with a couple Templars?

    • @nathanwinters2400
      @nathanwinters2400 Před 3 lety

      @@spacejesus6581 I think they should have combined them, in a sense. For me, I liked the Templar side more when it came it tangibility. I honestly think that time travel is extremely iffy at best, and honestly it's a can better left sealed.
      Instead they could have had the Templar's invade Redcliffe, having parallels between Origin's Darkspawn Invasion and Demon shenanigan's where it's revealed that the Lord Seeker is indeed possessed- a really good reason as to why the Templar are still pushing for war despite both sides suffering terribly, and still choosing to fight despite the fact that there's a damn HOLE in the SKY.
      From there it's quite simple, the demon is released from Corin's body and pulls you into a Fade adjacent realm like it does, and shows you a possible future in order to try and get information as to how you'd react. In the middle you can have Felix and Fiona trying to do the right thing and either stop the madness or be trying to help as many escape the Templar invasion as possible, learn that Gereon is tied to the fanatical Venatori and is trading the mages under his "care" to Corypeus in order to buy time for his son- perhaps Corypheus being darkspawn himself he'd know a thing or two and be using it to get easy followers via the use of one man's convictions.
      You could then have a choice: support the remaining Templar's in the purge of the mages (for the events of Kirkwall) or defend the mages by either using say, Cassandra as a Seeker to force them to retreat or outright become vengeance driven and try to completely dismantle the Order for all of it's past transgressions.
      And then the last things are simple, let Dorian say good-bye to Felix, inprision/execute Gereon Alexius, recruit either Fiona/Delrin Barris (that way both can survive or one can die- heck even place it on a time limit where if you're too late then both can be monsters/brainwashed), and finally return to Haven to find out that Corypheus used the assault as a distraction to build his forces for a direct attack on the unsuspecting Inquisition Forces.
      Badabing Badaboom. Hi I have too much time to think.

      @spacejesus6581 Před 3 lety

      @@nathanwinters2400 one problem, if you have the opportunity to take the Mages and Templars, or kill one entire faction while recruiting the other....how is Corypheus building his forces? His army is either the Mages or Templars depending on which one you take from him, if you take both from him he only has the Grey Wardens at that point and there are no more than 10,000 in all of Thedas....meanwhile you command the entire Circle of Magi/Templar Order or both, in addition to alliances from countries such as Ferelden etc....Cory doesn't have anything close to an army left

    • @nathanwinters2400
      @nathanwinters2400 Před 3 lety

      @@spacejesus6581 Well yes and no. Other than the Venatori and the Grey Wardens- he also had Orlais as a possible way to grow his forces. Granted it's later in the game.
      Not to mention, even if you "save" the Templar, there are still a shit ton of Red Templar in the game as enemies.
      Besides, it's a game. They could come up with a better damn reason. I honestly to this day don't understand how the greatly diminished Circle of Magi or the supposedly weakened Red Templar filled out 90% of his forces on their own.
      What I'm getting at is... there are a shit ton of gullible nimrods in Thedas, just like the real world.

This includes why certain main characters have different personalities, why the heck Alistair named your dog "Barkspawn" and why Zevran was hanging around the alienage rather than with the party (rather than letting him redeem himself, Alistair threatened to kill him if he ever faced him again, so he was hiding out in the Alienage to avoid his pursuers when you decided to burn it down).

    Interesting fact about The Shire in LotR is that if you have read the books there was a part known as the Scouring of the Shire. so Sauron walking into the shire and booting hobbit's faces off is not far off from the mark. just replace Sauron with Saruman and Grima then take the events of how Saruman dies in the movies and place it in the shire, and Grima slitting Saruman's throat instead of stabbing him then the hobbits shooting Grima and you have the real events that happened in the Shire.

    Dragon Age: Inquisition has a great part where you were thrown into a portal to the future, said future was fucked up due to you having been transferred there, you see what happens to all of your friends if you were to disappear and the villian were to go unchallenged. It's super interesting because you think to yourself "well I didn't experience all this and I'll simply travel back and change it all" but a character, Liliana, calls you out and says "for you it's been a few seconds and a day, but for us? We lived through this. We suffered without you" something like that. An interesting twist on fixing a bad timeline.

    The City Elf would have bee sentenced to death.
    The Dalish Elf would have died of the taint.
    The Human Noble would have been slayed by Howes man.
    The Mage Would also have been sentenced to death.
    The The Noble Dwarf would have died in the deep roads
    The commoner dwarf would have died in the cells of hunger.
    Fun Fact: If you choose one warden the other still have existed but died the way discriped above. By choosing an origin story you basicly choose were Duncan went to search for a recrut.

    I am surprised that Adult Link part of the Ocarina of Time is not in there. I mean, When you awaken from your 7 year long slumber, you arrive in a Castle in a ruined state. The sky is purple, the castle town is filled with ReDeads and all people are dead. All other people are enslaved, being killed by Ganondorf`s minions or are pretty much in hiding for most of the time (I believe).
    And not only that but you have to go on a really long journey and travel back and forwards through time to save the kingdom & the rest of the world from destruction. At the end creating an alternate timeline where you died and doomed the world for millenniatill you are reborn as a different Link and finally defeat Ganon, even though he always returns.

    • @animatrix1490

      Daniël Fuhres there are darker timelines due to the fact Nintendo confirmed the many worlds interpretation as the cannon for the legend of Zelda by releasing and official timeline which would imply there was more than one link since one link can't both Die and win which confirms the many worlds interpretation of time travel. Therfore there exist a timeline where Gannon wins outright and no reincarnation of link nor Zelda can stop him.

    Not sure if this would count, but no Marvel: Ultimate Alliance? If you fail to do a few simple tasks throughout the game, you basically end up letting all the mutants die from a virus because you didn't save the computer the research was on, Atlantis goes to war with humanity, Senator Kelly forces mutants into concentration camps, Mystique kills Professor X and the X-Men disband, Asgard alienates itself from Earth, Odin and Sif die, an asteroid destroys the west coast of the US, two alien races go to war with each other, Thanos takes over Earth, Mephisto causes lots of destruction.
    Presumably the second game takes place before all of the 'endings' from the first happen (since you're not being attacked by Atlanteans or Mephisto or aliens or Thanos and all the playable mutants are alive and X-Men still together), so as you're going through with your Civil War story, there's still all that doom on the horizon (except Dr. Doom, he's still being tortured by Odin).

I can picture the Uruk-hai with a tenderly roasted halfling, though. But then again, the Uruk-hai in the lore Tolkien wrote seemed less likely to party.

      Lord Inquisitor Exactly. All that good food those Hobbitses ate have made them tender and juicy. The filets minion of Middle Earth.
      I really wish there was a sandbox version of that game. So like you could kill Frodo, ORRrrrr... You could throw him in a dungeon and torture him (at your leisure), and I mean TORTURE him. Like Manhunt type hands-on treatment. Uncensored, not the neutered version.
      I'm still planning to play this game.

    It's also amazing how this ending to star wars is actually somehow more preferential than what Kathleen Kennedy and Jar Jar Abrams came up with.

    When it comes to dark endings, the Conquest ending from Hyperdimension Neptunia Mk2 (and the remake Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;birth 2 Sisters Generation) takes the top spot in my mind. From a series that normally is pretty upbeat about facing some dire situations, this was an ending that just doesn't hold back on gut-punching the player constantly.

    Legacy of Kain series: pretty much all of the games constitute as the "Darkest Timeline", as the canonical ending of Blood Omen sees Kain instead of sacrificing himself to restore balance (allegedly) goes on to conquer the world and pretty much hunt humans into extinction.
