Bro, you don't have to be sorry for ANYTHING..As a fan of the carpenters for half a century, it's so awesome to see footage I haven't seen...I've seen Karen's drum solos on youtube a bunch of times but; this is a GREAT upload! Thanks so much and Good health and happiness to you and yours!
Same, this is cool to see. Thankyou

rough time on earth….
Naaaaa!!! Muy dulce para cantar...pero que quiso hacer?
NP...nice to see and remember one of the greatest singers of all time. Love Karen.
I’m a drummer and I tell you Karen was right in there with all the great jazz and rock drummers of her day! I loved that she played traditional grip with the left stick on the snare and the hand speed she demonstrated around the kit! Of course most know her for her outstanding alto vocals but don’t be fooled because Karen was also a marvelous drummer! I learned a lot by watching her performances! Hats off to Karen Carpenter: drummer and singer 🎤🥁extraordinaire!
As a drummer I agree
Absolutely 🥁🥁🥁
Karen WAS a fantastic drummer and gorgeous singer!
Up there with other jazz drummers, maybe. But up there with rock drummers like John Bonham, Keith Moon or Mitch Mitchell? No.
As a drummer myself Karen was highly underrated.
An absolute BEAST on the drums - Superb playing & while singing, NOT easily done. Can see that playing them brought her JOY!
no, shes not a beast on the drums. My god, the ignorant comments are a distraction from the actual talent she has.
That chick had some crazy chops.
Noy easy даже по отдельности если петь или играть на барабанах. А тут всё чётко.
yeah she beat out Buddy Rich one year in the early 70's in the Playboy Jazz Poll GET REAL!! LOL.. She was a good AVERAGE pro drummer who has a great voice. PERIOD!!
you ever listen to fanny? that drummer is unbelievable
Holy smokes. Sings like a bird and plays drum like a beast. So underrated. Too bad she passed way too young
How young?
@@ridleyroid9060she was 32, heart attack after struggling with anorexia
Yes, she truly left us too soon.
I’ve known who Karen Carpenter was for decades.
I’ve heard her beautiful voice for decades.
How am I today years old and just finding out that she was a freakin’ magician on the drums?!?
Incredible.
She was a drummer before she was a singer
Unbelievable talent. Had I not just seen and heard this I wouldn't have understood.
You're not alone. I never knew she even held a drumstick until a couple years ago. Never paid that much attention to that kind of music nor the people playing it in those days and never actually saw any footage of her playing drums until very recently.
@@hughjass1044 Same. When I was a child in the 70s, I even remember the ads on television for Carpenters' records, and making fun of them, because they weren't rock and roll. But digging into more of how they came about, gave me an appreciation of Karen's beautiful singing voice, and then to dig into how she played the drums, absolutely floored me. Cheers.
Not loving the tempo of this. And the keyboard and bass solos are gratuitous.
I think maybe when Buddy Rich said she was his favorite drummer he may not have been kidding. No wonder she didn’t want to come out front. Crisp, accurate, tasteful, and that speed shows real stamina, particularly with that light a touch. She was a truly gifted singer but on this her drumming is better.
So Buddy Rich said she was his favorite drummer (when asked who his favorite drummer was) and John Lennon told her she had a beautiful voice. That’s quite a pair of endorsements.
Karen Carpenter was a drummer first. In fact, she only learned to sing once she had already enrolled as a music major at California State University, Long Beach. She got in thanks to her monster chops as a drummer and percussionist, only joining the choir at the behest of her brother.
You can definitely see the Buddy Rich influence with the drum setup (low hi-hat, position of the 2 crash cymbals) and the over and under crossovers.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@erzug That is a buddy Rich drum set!
When Keith Moon was 5 years old, he saw this.
The rest is history... 🤔😅
Karen was the real deal on drums and had an amazing voice.
One of my favorite singers of time.
Absolutely ❤❤❤
lol, and the brother was the best pianist on the planet
As a bass player, i must give respect to the bassist. Great chops, very tastefully played! No taking away from Karen or Richard, they are great in their own right.

Karen Carpenter absolutely killed it with her drumming! To be so fast, crisp & precise all while doing lead vocals is really damn hard at any age and experience level, let alone at the tender age of EIGHTEEN (as she was in this performance)!!! A truly exceptional talent ❤
what the fuck
Yup, and undoubtedly she was a musical genius
I feel confident that had Karen been allowed to keep on being 'a drummer who sang' (clearly in her element sitting behind a drum kit) the world would have been a better place - and Karen would have continued to enthrall us to this day. When first I discovered her drumming (only recently) I fell in love with her music all over again, 53 year after the first time! Since being a 10 year old - I had no idea that Karen also played drums on 'Close to You'! The first 'pop' song that inspired my imagination! What a huge talent, what a huge loss to the world. So young. I could cry..
Karen wasn't just a good drummer - she was a great drummer But she never played drums on any of their albums. Why not? Well when you walk into the studio and Hal Blaine is sitting there, well that kind of ends that conversation, right?
I'm with you except I do cry.
Yeah, I think Hal Blaine did the recordings. You can hear about it in the interviews with The Wrecking Crew. While Karen is good, studio drumming is different from stage performance. Hal was the master at doing it in the studio.
@@jimf.9822 Me too....,,
Same. Admire her voice since my childhood. Touched my inner beeing, pure healing to me.
This woman was a legendary talent in every single sense of the word. Even when she would sing, the birds sang as well. Talent like this is once in a lifetime.
her voice really lit up a radio in a car- so sweet!
Why do birds suddenly appear every time she is near? 😅
☺@@gary.h.turner
She was phenomenal. Such a loss.
What astonishes me is the sensitivity of her touch on the drums while singing at the same time. It's unearthly.
Wow she is 18 here and clearly killing it. What a talent she was. But the price she paid for being forced into the spotlight was sadly her life. Very sad.
Huh , she didn't eat, she wasn't forced into any spotlight and yes there are pressures once you hit the big time.

When she was 18, Karen Carpenter was voted at the Playboy Jazz Festival the best drummer alive. You kids have no idea what you're missing with her nuclear talent.
what nonsense. She was a virtual unknown in 1968
Yep. John Bonham of Led Zeppellin was voted 2nd. He wasn't pleased!
Popularity contest. She better than some cat who been doing it longer than she’s been holding sticks?
Yeah, that definetly sounds like a popularity contest, not a test of ability. They were both great drummers, but neither of them were The best drummer in 1968. They were no where near Billy Cobham, Art Blakey, Buddy Rich, Greg Errico, Jimmy Carl Black, John Mayhew, Jimmy Cobb, John Stephen French, Buddy Deppenschmidt, Tony Williams,Hal Blaine, Mickey Roker, Bill Bruford, and plenty of others. I'm talking strictly about Technical ability not album sales, fame or their impact on culture et cetera. Carpenter was a great vocalist and an underrated drum to boot, she made my second favorite Christmas album ever. John Bonham influenced many great drummers, likely more than the majority of my list, but like I said I'm only judging straight drumming ability.
I love that John Bonham pitched a fit when he learned that she beat him in the Playboy Music Readers' Poll!
Neil Peart got an award for being voted the best rock drummer in the world in the 70's. When asked how it felt to be the best rock drummer in the world he replied.............dunno best go ask Karen Carpenter
And John Bonham went moaning to destroy yet another hotel room
Both these kids were monsters - absolute prodigies - on their respective instruments. And Karen had one of the most beautiful contralto voices in pop music history.
It may have been called the Dick Carpenter Trio early but it was easy to see that Karen was the star.
Nobody could touch her vocally and she was an incredible drummer, but Richard was a highly-skilled keyboardist as well.
That is very true but Richard knew that her Talent was off-the-charts. So he stepped back and allow her to be in the spotlight and rightly so one of the best singers and obviously a monster drummer she was a beautiful woman unfortunately she didn't think so because of a snide remark by her mother I believe started all this
@@robertlongwill8856Her mom was way worse, it wasn’t just a snide remark that caused her anorexia, it was a mixture of her overbearing parents preferring her brother Richard over her, her mother possibly forcing her to diet from her high school years well until she moved out of their house in the early 70s, but of course it got worse when she was in the spotlight of being a leading singer and away from the safety of her drums.
When he tours now it's The Carpenter...
@@stephenstone8480Or, just "The Dick"!
I miss Karen Carpenter she was great. Died too young, a tragedy.
With those we have loved who have gone it is best to remember them when they were heathly doing what they did best and this is surely what we are seeing here. I am pretty sure our Souls go marching (singing, dancing, drumming, loving) on. Thanks to the Carpenters for all their great music.
The drum company Ludwig made custom drums for only 2 drummers in those days. The 1st was Ringo Starr and the other was Karen Carpenter.
She’s the reason I started playing drums at 8. My dad took us to see them at the Greek theater when I was 8. She was amazing.
🙏🏻♥️😞
I can’t tell you how hard it is to drum that well WITHOUT singing too! Karen was such a talent. Great keyboards from her brother Richard Carpenter as well.
Richard Carpenter was a hella arranger, too.
What a talent Karen Carpenter was. She had such an angelic voice and she could really bang on those drums as well. She was so happy behind her drum kit until she had to come out to the front. A very sad end to Karen's life in the end. One of the most beautiful voices in music.
I am SO glad she came out from behind the drums!
Endings may appear sad...but she LIVED the rest of her gig...trooper 🎶✌
Wow! Awesome! I knew Karen for her voice so sweet and nice, but not for her super drumming! And she seems to take such pleasure in making both, with her smile and such apparent relaxation! The man on keyboards and the bassist are very good too. I heard Karen sometimes but I saw her very rarely, so thanks much for this video.
RIP Karen (gone much too soon)
So painfully sad, that she is gone.
Terrific voice, amazing on drums
😢
She was a ONE OF A KIND. No female singer--TO THIS DAY, sounds anything like her; cannot compare.

Karen loved to play the drums and it broke her heart when they told her she had to come out from behind them. She was truly a jazz musician and was not at all comfortable with her voice but she loved playing the drums. I think Buddy Rich worked with her teaching and mentoring.
Uh, no he didn’t.
Uh...no. although that would be a cool story. However, someone asked Buddy in 1974 if there were any pop drummers he liked on the scene. Without hesitation, he said Karen Carpenter. This was a rather loud statement considering Buddy was notorious for hating every drummer on the music scene.
I was familiar with the Carpenters. Never knew she had those chops. 😮
Wow she was a shredder!! my first wife is from Downey calif and she lived on the same block with Karen and her brother and they went to high school together and were life long friends with my ex wife!! she attended our wedding with her brother and family in 1971 when they were becoming well known!! sadly we divorced 3 years later!! but we were blessed with twin girls and she was the God mother to our little ones and it was sad when she killed herself with that dreaded disease. Very humble about their success...
That's fascinating. Thanks for sharing.
Wow. I'm so sorry for your loss. She was beautiful and amazing...I never even knew she played drums- and singing while drumming is impossible.! ...at least for me. She smashed it!
I’d say her creep brother and manager were responsible for her anorexia. They were relentless about it, and both were jealous of her talent.
Which highschool did they go to in Downey?

She could rattle them drums like. She could sing, what a talented lady
I’m with @garylagstrom3864. I never realised how great a drummer Karen was. It makes it even more cruel that they took it away from her. She felt powerful and in control when she was playing, and there’s no doubt that it didn’t detract from her ability to command attention when she sang. I’m so glad female musicians don’t have as much pressure on them to be the pretty singer at the front of the stage. These days, her drumming would be celebrated, and she’d be featured on other artists’ songs.
Who took what away from her ? Are you trying to make her out to be a victim ? She concentrated on her legendary singing and still played the drums when she fancied.
Men cannot handle strong women, especially if she has a great talent that a normally a man's profession
@jasonallen6081 women were not encouraged to do men dominant things. And she was bullied by many and the media. They called her chubby and it sparked her eating disorder and early death. No skirting the issue. Facts are facts
@susannpatton2893 Bullied by who ? Universally adored and feted as one of the greatest voices of her generation .You forget that bit. Her problem came from the pressure of fame . Elvis also had an eating disorder for the same reason. She could have had a drink or drug problem, but she fixated on her weight. You say, "They called her chubby," but they also said she was beautiful. You have to think about what it's like to have everybody look at you. I don't think she'd have it any other way. People with great talent don't usually have long, happy lives, and though she died so young, she's also achieved a kind of immortality. Don't make her into a victim.
Just watched another vid called Carpenters in concert - 1976 where she is flexing her drum talent fiercely. I don't think it was taken away from her.
Omg she is so beautiful. So sad she passed.
Wow.. her fills are inventive and seemingly effortless.
I grew up listening to the Carpenters in the early 70s. I knew Karen played drums but I had no idea how skilled she was. I'm blown away.
imagine being this good at 18? Perfect vocals insane drumming
I was today years old when I found out Karen Carpenter was a bad ass drummer
If she'd stayed on the drums maybe she wouldn't have died so young. Way happier it seems than as front woman.
Love and miss you, beautiful Karen ❤️ R.I.P. dear lady 😘 !
Probably the most elegantly dressed drummer I've ever seen :)
We know what the future holds for Karen Carpenter. The Carpenters probably wouldn't have achieved worldwide success had Karen not left the drum set and taken to the front of the stage as a vocalist. However, I think she was happiest when she was sitting at the drum set.
Well said.
Lovely, an actual live performance from the 60s. All three are very talented.
Yeah, all the lipsync stuff got old very quickly when I used to watch TV. They were from an era where most musicians actually were musicians and could do their stuff live. You just couldn't do "Studio Magic" because the effects and pedals hadn't been invented yet.
Not so much in this song but Karen Carpenter had one of the most Beautiful voices that I’ve ever heard ❤❤️❤️
although this song wasn't a great showcase of her voice, it was live. No studio filters or multiple voice tracks to enhance her singing. Despite this she sang on key and drummed and made it look effortless/
Her drumming is also so underrated, she was great, and it shows in this song

Awesome. She was such an accomplished jazz drummer.
When a drummer is playing traditional grip, you know they’re pretty damn good at their craft.
She must’ve been a Buddy Rich and Max Roach fan. She has a bit of both- the power and speed👍🏾👍🏾❤️❤️
And Louis Bellson too.
Traditional grip means nothing towards talent, she was just good.
@@DeafeningCha Traditional grip means she’s had training and all jazz drummers play that way. Jazz drummers are the best at their instruments.
@@jt1929I love jazz, went to jazz school. High level jazz musicians are technically masterful, no doubt. However, I think classical musicians are capable of the same level of proficiency or maybe even more. I think the spirit of improv, paired with technical and musical mastery, is really what makes jazz great. I wish classical musicians would improvise like how they used to during the composers lives!
Her idols were Joe Morello and Buddy Rich.
It's one thing to be able to play a jazz motif on the drums like that at that speed. Now this is real drummin! Modern drum nerds, take notes!
Karen was a jazz drummer. This video doesn’t show what she could really do. Drumming was her happy place, not singing although she is one of the best of all time. It was a stroke of genius for Richard to have her sing in her lower contralto voice which is the lowest of all female voices and extremely rare. Cher, Patsy Cline, Tina Turner are all contralto. Karen is the essence of a female crooner style like Billie Holiday. I love her work and wish she been able to have more control over her life and avoid her eating disorder.
The carpenters are the most underrated for their talent, songwriting and contribution to music . Wow holy shit.
THE greatest singing drummer !
that would be Don Henley
My taste goes from hip-hop to rock to punk to indie etc. and I have to admit, this is easily my favourite ever performance.
Karen Carpenter's laying out Amen Breaks and Funky Drummer style beats.
just wow! i didn't know Karen Carpenter was such a talented drummer, playing jazz on a kit no less, singing well at the same time in go go boots and very pretty as well.
Just watching this video makes me appreciate The Carpenters even more! They could have stayed in this jazzy pop area and possibly have become some of the greatest jazz musicians of their generation. However, they all realized that Karen’s is too special of a gift to share and changed their style to support that. Karen Carpenter influenced and empowered a whole generation of female singers and even some male singers. While many may not like them, their influence is unquestionable! In my opinion, they should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!
Holy hell! I had my doubts, but Karen really poured it on at the end!
Nothing less than killer force! (Buddy Rich fans will get that one.)
I never heard this before. Karen nails the vocals. Not to mention drums.
Holy cow, it's like she's 2 different people, one singing magically all composed and another just rocking the hell out of that very basic drum kit. I had never actually seen her play the drums, but, dang, she's got the beat!!! Awesome
Karen had serious chops on the kit! Had she not had such an amazing voice too or been in the Carpenters, she would still have been famous as a drummer be it jazz musician, or highly sought after session player. Incredible talent!
Karen & Richard were so talented in more ways than even their fans realize! What an unnecessary loss when she died! So sad to this day.

What a performance! At a time when women who played drums could count on the fingers of one hand, Karen Carpenter was a real fireworks. By making her mark, thanks to her immense talent, we can say that Karen has opened the doors to many female artists, both vocal and percussion. We immediately feel such a passion, such joy overflowing with energy when she plays that we can only let ourselves be contaminated, for our greatest pleasure.
And, in this recording, her brother Richard, on electric piano, and the bass player really do not give their place either. When we know the tragic end of this gifted woman debt, at only 32 years old, in 1983, and the battle she had to fight for years against a terrible illness that was little known at the time, anorexia nervosa, we look at this video with pleasure, of course, but also with a twinge of sorrow. Rest in peace, Karen. Even forty years after your untimely death, your audience, young and old, do not forget you.
