  • My visit in Bilbao started at the top of Mount Artxanda. From there, my guide, Geno, and I took in the sweeping views of the city backed by the Cantabrian Mountains. We could even see the blue of the Atlantic Ocean in the distance! From the birds-eye view, Bilbao’s unique architecture was apparent and alluring. The city looked large and bustling from above but I was eager to explore.
We rode the funicular down the mountain to a small plaza full of families lounging on benches, eating ice cream, and playing soccer. As we strolled and took in the sights, Geno greeted many people that she knew with a wave and an “Hola!” We saw her old friend who works on a second story building adjacent to the river. She leaned out of the office window to greet Geno and me as we passed and chatted about her approaching retirement. We saw her former colleague who she congratulated on his recent marriage. We saw a fellow member of the church choir who introduced us to his family. We even ran into her mother-in-law!
Walking around Bilbao with Geno gave me a completely different impression of the city. From above, the art, modernity, and access to nature are what strike the visitor; but from the street Bilbao truly shines with its charming and undeniable hometown feel.
