  • Hey everyone Wolf Lord Rho here!
    Today we continue Night Lords week, as we discuss the Leadership of Sevatar. And ask the question, is he the leader the Night Lords need?
    Spoiler Warning to begin the events we are discussing today are from the Horus Heresy novella "Prince of Crows" by Aaron Dembski-Bowden. As always I really recommend you read the story for yourself first. As that's the best way to enjoy the lore, for yourself! Not only that we help to support the great Games Workshop and Black Library. Because without them we don't have this amazing lore to talk about! Link: www.blacklibrary.com/the-horu...

      @Aizen2468 Před rokem +2

      @@stevepickford3004 yes, sadly, the Primarchs are more than just "stronger Astartes," as some believe.
      They're actually biologically and genetically engineered to have a DOMINANT and CHARISMATIC power/hold over their legion. Like, a legionaire has to have a strong will to resist its call, and legionaires are predisposed to WANT to serve their primarch.
      This natural hold/power does not pass on to their Astartes commanders over their underlings. And we've seen that Astartes can be strong willed enough and stubborn enough to actually resist the natural pull of their primarch, such as with Nathaniel, and the Astartes at Istvaan III.
      But what I'm trying to say is that, I believe it's actually shown to be EXTREMELY difficult for a Non-Primarch to have absolute power and hold over an entire legion of Astartes. Not the typical 1,000 Astartes chapter, but I'm talking a whole legion of Astartes.
      Abaddon is shown to be quite special in being able to do that, but I'd stay say Horus did it better. And I think Konrad saw how insane his legion was, and this kinda showed that it would be difficult for ANYONE to fully keep them in check for long.

    In the short "The Long Night" ADB basically tells us that the Carcharadons are Night Lords. Sevatar thinks of the eyeless shark of Nostramo's dark oceans (the literal heraldry of the Space Sharks). He also talks about where "mankinds real enemies are - in the darkness, beyond the rim." And the final scene where he chooses to pursue justice for Altani rather than escape. Then there's the fact that Curze thinks he's still alive even many years later.

    • @cgavin1
      @cgavin1 Před 3 lety +6

      @@mcchicken1849 They probably are. There's a Traitor Terran Ravenguard fighting alongside Sevatar in Prince of Crows.. so its likely they "had a baby" at some point. Some of the Atrementar express their unease at having "Ravens" in their midst but Sevatar makes it clear that regardless of what colour their armour is, anyone who fought with them on Istavaan is now a Night Lord (end of). My theory is that Sevatar was somehow released by the DA or escaped (another book there for sure) and took the remaining Atrementar out to the void/rim to pursue his own justice and ran in to the Terran Ravenguard and goodness knows how many other blackshields and splinter elements and they probably merged together at some point. ADB needs to write more books! I don't see Sevetar as ever being loyalist again and he clearly doesn't give a toss about the Imperium or the "cause" of Horus either. He's driven by his own (hard coded) sense of justice ("I am justice! I am judgement! I am punishment!") There they encounter a terrible enemy and for their own reasons engage it. Just when all seems lost they are saved by Terran Raven Guard exiles/someone else. They join forces to defeat the enemy and most of them are wiped out. The survivors come together and using what stable gene seed is left, create something new from the ashes. They don't consider themselves loyalists or traitors, they are above such sentiments. They are the watchers in the dark.. and they are justice! judgement! punishment! Sevatar displayed his ability to lead and his ability to see the bigger picture more than once. His fellow members of the Kyroptera wanted to attack the Dark Angels, which would've ended in them being massacred. Sevatar wanted to bring the Legion back to Horus so they could be there for the Siege of Terra, for the war that really mattered. He set in place a plan that would distract the First Legion long enough for the bulk of the Night Lords to make the translation jump to Terra. He didn't trust Curze's plans because Curze himself was unstable. That was shown when Curze boarded the Invincible Reason and ordered Sevatar to bring the Atramentar with him. Because of Curze's order the bulk of the Atramentar were killed and Sevatar captured. Curze escaped but was trapped in the bowels of the Invincible Reason. If Curze hadn't attacked the Dark Angels and instead made the translation back to Horus, then the Siege might have ended differently, seeing as he was known as one of the best fighters among the primarchs. Curze essentially sacrificed the Atramentar and Sevatar just for the chance to get to grips with Lion El'Jonson, and we saw how that ended. I have to agree that was a great Sevatar moment. I also liked the story of the disabled fighter pilot captain who came across information in the records about the Nightlords and thousand sons at a library. After travelling to the flagship he eventually meets Sevatar, who listens to the accusations in the report. He gives the human officer a choice, drop the matter and forget everything or stay and watch the truth, the catch.... he would never leave that ship alive. Great short story from before the Heresy.

      @chrisbennett6236 Před 3 lety +1

      That's the great thing about the lore of 40k: so little is standardized that it's primarily about our opinion of things.
      I personally don't think the Dark Angels were able to keep him captive for long and he escaped into the void. But I don't have a specific idea of where he could have gone from their. The only reason I don't believe he became a Grey Knight is because they only take the most powerful psykers and Sevatar never displayed psionics at all. That's not say he didn't suppress them as the entire Death Guard legion did prior to falling to Chaos. These people that debunk the theory forget that Sevatar was around when the decree of Nikea was put down.
      On a side note, unless hes been in the Warp most or all of this time he wouldn't still be alive regardless. Don't forget that Dante is the oldest Astartes not in a dreadnaught or having spent time in Warp and he's only around 1500 years old and on the verge of death due to old age.

Which is a dam shame since if there was any 40k era character I would have loved to see a Night Lord model get made for, it would have been Decimus.
