  • This is about some of the basics of why blades are shaped in different ways, and some remarks about the cutting performance of particular blade profiles and cross-sections. And also my opinion on the infamous curved vs straight blade debate.

    The Berserkr by Albion (single-edged Viking sword)

    Kumar Kobra from Himalayan Imports (long khukuri)

    The Duellist by Dynasty Forge (thrusting oriented medieval longsword)
    The Town Guard by Arms & Armor (Renaissance sidesword, aka cut & thrust sword)

      Well, if there is so little reason for curvature, why is the katana curved?
      I have an idea, maybe it's so bc of the society in which it is made. And I have feeling it is made for the quick draw. From sheath to flesh in the quickest way possible, all else taken into consideration, length and so on. From sheath to a meaningful blow, the most efficient way possible. I have a feeling that trying to do this with a European hand and a half sword would be clumsy. And after all, weapons are made to fit strategy in the optimal, weapon design, therefore, reveals much about a society as does that society when it's at war.

    A couple points about curved swords. The "small point of contact" doesn't really work because the edge isn't cutting a thin film, it's going through a 3d object, so the edge is going to be in contact for the full width of the target all the way through. For heavily curved swords, the edge trails behind the hand. This makes cutting easier for two reasons. The first is that the angle of the edge turns even a basic chop into a drawing slice. The second is that because the edge is pulled rather than pushed through, it will naturally fall into correct alignment with the motion of the hand, so edge alignment is less of an issue. These things don't really have an effect on slightly curved swords like katakanas and some sabres though. There is one last feature of curved swords which is quite interesting. If in a fight your opponent throws an countercut at your flat and you have a straight blade it will very effectively open you to attack. If however your blade is curved, then turning your edge in towards their countercut will allow their sword to roll off your tip, and you can very quickly and naturally flick it upwards to effect a cut on them behind their blade.

    • @manawa3832
      @manawa3832 Před 8 lety

      That move sounds pretty neat and I can kind of picture it. It would flick of the back of the blade; following up the curve?

    • @hitokijb
      @hitokijb Před 8 lety +1

      kinda... it still makes a difference, it does have less resistance, not perceptible enough for the entire internet to freak out but it does help in both "chopping" and cutting/slashing moves

    • @Hephera
      @Hephera Před 8 lety +1

      try cutting a tomato with a butchers cleaver, then try with a regular curved chefs knife.

    • @lancerd4934
      @lancerd4934 Před 8 lety +1

      The difference between the two isn't the curve of the blade, it's the thickness and edge geometry. Cleavers need a more obtuse angle because of the heavy chopping they're required to do. That said, I can shave with my cleaver, slicing tomatoes is no problem at all, so there's also how sharp you choose to keep your shit.

    • @Hephera
      @Hephera Před 8 lety +3

      No. Go find a straight blade of exactly the same thickness and edge geometry as a chefs knife. Place it on top of a tomato, and push. Unless it's exceptionally sharp. Youre going to squish the insides before the skin breaks. Do the same thing with the curved part of a chefs knife and it will slice effortlessly. Smaller contact area means more force per area. Thats the while point of a blade in the first place.

    The angle of a strait sword changes when slicing through something, as you pull through the swing the angle becomes more flat on, but with a curved blade, the curve on it means the angle it is cutting at remains more constant through a swing.

    sorry skal, but in fact i believe you mixed up abit chopping and cutting...
    chopping does get heavily influenced by overall weight cutting is all and pretty much solely about edge geometry. its a difference on a molecular level, where cutting means for the matter of the edge beeing able to wiggle inbetween the matter of the cut object, whereas chobbyng pretty much is equivalent to forcing your way through and prying it open.
    theres a reason why the sharpness of knives is testet in labs by constant drawing under a little, but constant force...
    really sharp edges as the ones of operative diamond and glass scalpels(used in eye surgery) create cuts so perfect, that they seal instantly if left to close, because the cut just disconnected the molecules of the flesh where the cut is without further damaging the surrounding material.
    so after this is cleared... curved blades tend to cut better, because the curvature of the blade redirects the force of a blow automatically into a draw cut. the straight blade on the other hand TENDS to simply bite into the target and dissipate the force into blunt trauma of the surrounding tissue. just to make it clear: I DO NOT INTEND TO SAY making draw cuts is impossible with straight edges, but the wielder has to manually do so, whereas curved blades assist you in the drawing part, because of the direction of the force applied vs the normal of the blade (i could bore you guys with some proper graphics to make my point, but only if you really want...maybe if skal asks i could try to even animate them)

  • @mnk199245
    @mnk199245 Před 8 lety +3

    I think the reason that curved blades seem to cut better is not only how they are designed but how they are used. Straight swords are often used for hacking or chopping with draw cuts being secondary while with scimitars almost every cut incorporates a draw cut. Curved blades also have a less of a chance to bind as their curvatures allows them to roll off flesh and material in a sense.

  • @lildragon6415
    @lildragon6415 Před 8 lety +3

    When it comes to curved vs straight blade swords, I like to think of horizontal vs diagonal blades on a guillotine. The curved edge on a sword creates the same effect as a diagonal guillotine blade when it makes contact with its target since it is the sweet spot in the last thirds of the blade that makes contact.

    It depends on whether you are mounted or on foot. For mounted combat, go with a curved blade since the curve will result in less jarring force for both the blade and your arm. On foot, you want the straight blade since it's better for thrusting and blocking. A recurved blade is a good chopper and good for foot as well.

    • @marcelogonzalez8547
      @marcelogonzalez8547 Před 8 lety +1

      Indeed, most european curved sword were cavalry swords, and by the time
      they were becoming more and more popular the primary infantry melee weapon was the bayonet. Curved swords were an evolution in this context, something light that could cut, especially with the gradual disuse of armor. In the middle ages however, and even before, the sword was not the primary cavalry weapon, the primary weapon was the lance, designed to defeat armor by striking the target with great force in a very small point. Other cavalry weapons in the middle ages were the mace and the warhammer (these last twon more in the late middle ages), but the sword was not really used while mounted, not if you could have something else.

    Excellent video! The curved blades are also a little better at maintaining edge alignment throughout the cut. They just generally and naturally carry their own momentum in a straighter line than straighter blades do. Admittedly it's a physics thing I don't fully understand but I can definitely feel it in the hand when cutting.
