The West thought that trade would lead to a more democratic China. It didn't (at least not as they expected).
China thought that as it grew trade relations and economic clout, that it would get respect and that other powers would somehow turn a blind eye as they expanded their regional domination. They too were disappointed.
The honeymoon is over. Talk about "decoupling," "friendshoring" and "de-risking" are fun talking points, but the relationship of mutual reliance is still there.
