  • Video of a few OARS rafts, a dory, and 2 snout rigs running Big Drop 2 on the Colorado River in Cataract Canyon. I think I shot this on Thursday, June 13th, 2019. Flows were right around 40,000 CFS.

That's my son and me in the front of the dory. Wish we had video of us hitting the Pitcher's Mound - an awesome save by Dave the oarsman!

Nice! You picked a great year to run Cat - it peaked this year at less than half that much water. Stay safe out there

That dude’s oar pinned his melon to the boat! Glad he had a helmet on!

Just got off the river with Warriors on Cataract. Zero chance we could have paddled with the 60 cfs we just had last weekend. We were on one like the blue J frame around 1 min mark. It was intense!

Yeah it's a bit ugly (gnarly, fun, whatever your cup of tea is) anywhere above the high 40's. I always felt the mid 60's were somehow the worst, although anything above 60 is (in my book) more scary than actual "fun." As I've aged I've really begun to appreciate the mid 30's and even the very low water trips - so many good beaches and less stress overall. Glad you had a good trip!

3:00 And that, folks, is why you always wear helmets in serious white water... Glad to see that some of you western boaters have common sense 👍

Right!? I guess everyone starts somewhere. I've had far worse runs in Big Drop 2 though... At least he stayed upright. And it's good thing he was wearing a helmet.

That run falls into the “I’d rather be lucky than good category” that being said I’ve also seen worse runs in the drops!
