DAF used this system back in the 1970s in some models. If I remember correctly there were about 10 or 12 pads pivoted at one end around the flywheel inside a drum. As the revs increased, the pads swung out on the pivots grasping the inside of the drum. I love the way these guys will try anything.....seat of the pants mechanicing but our Russian friend is smarter than his humour lets on! Keep it up guys.

    Awesome work!
I just wanted to remind you, that you can change gears without disengaging the clutch (waiting for it to drop in rpm).
After acceleration just let of the gas pedal while simultateously pushing the gear lever to neutral... in a small timeframe there is no load on the transmission - so you can get in neutral with ease.
To engage the new gear you have to adjust the engine rpm with the gas pedal and if the rpm is matched - it should be possible to engage the gear.
    (Google helps)
I wish you would do a follow up video:
How fast can you accelerate by flooring it in first gear?
How much wear can be seen on the brake shoes?
    _____________________________________________________
Maybe add weights to the brake shoes while also using a stronger spring.
Spring force is linear while centrifugal force is square to the rpm.
==> That should improve the clutch torque capacity without slipping after it reached its engaging rpm (1200 - 1300).

I usually upshift while cruising without using a clutch, you just drop out of gear a quarter second after stepping off the throttle, and keep a smooth pressure into the gear immediately above, and as the revs drop the synchros will kick in and you should be able to shift into next gear with little to no shudder. I usually do it around town from 3-4 on a long straight over a bridge

I remember that the Citroën 2cv (3cv, Mehari and Ami 8) had centrifugal clutch. But this was used mainly when the car was stopped and you put the 1st gear without using the clutch.
The fact was that this engine, a tiny 2 cylinder boxer, neded a lot of revs to function properly.
The car had clutch pedal for the 2nd and other gears, you can used it or not, depending if you let the revs go down to change gears or not.
I think that the Renault 4L had the same clutch, but I'm not sure.
Great work! That Lada sounds like and old Citroën!!!

Haven't watched the video but isn't that the opposite of what it should do?, a normal car slowes to a stop when you let off the gas, since the engine is being turned by the tires withouy the gas or air needed for combustion, basically the engine is just acting as a useless air compressor, slowing the car, add a centrifugal clutch and now the tires can't spin the engine taking much longer for the car to slow down under no throttle, since the only losses are now in friction in the trans, diff, and tires to road

    • @nerd1000ify
      @nerd1000ify Před 3 lety

@sw4gr1d Most automatic cars have a sprag clutch in the transmission and will just freewheel when you lift off the accelerator, at least in the lower gears. I believe this was done mostly to ensure a smoother drive in low gear (you're probably familiar with the way a manual can shudder and jerk when you make a bad shift in low gear).

If u were to make more of these centrifugal clutch conversion kits for any type of car or truck people would go nuts for then, they would save lots of money and time not having to replace traditional clutchs all the time. If u ever get into making custom customer request orders for these clutchless centrifugal systems, count me in, i kill to have one for my cars.

Bloody clever and worked fine - They did actually use the same setup in DaF 33, the little dutch car, but it also had a variable belt for the gearing - so an early constant velocity gearbox. Also I believe VW used a similar setup in VW Beetle automatics and they used manual gearchange for that as a semi automatic ( I think that was centrifugal clutch in that too?). In a way, your clutch system is working like a Laycock De Normanville Overdive Unit, the difference being that the OD Unit operates hydraulically, whereas your method is centrifugal force. Try replacing your centrifugal clutch with an overdrive Unit, but you would need to arrange the hydraulic pump pressure to achieve drive. On a Laycock OD Unit, the other difference is that the friction material and Drum are always wet-lubricated with Hydraulic Fluid, and this makes the OD Unit last a long time. Hydraulic oil removes the friction heat. Please try this instead of your Centrifugal Clutch. I think that fitting of a Laycock OD Unit would work perfectly, as everything in the OD Unit is perfectly balanced - meaning no vibration at all. I was amazed that your Lada could be driven so well on the centrifugal clutch, and at tickover, at speed, the car would 'coast' freely - saving gas! Love your vids. It's pretty cool actually. I was thinking that you can archieve a similar thing using a normal clutch. Just use oil pressure to control the clutch operation, to elevate the oil presure the engine needs to rev up, put a release valve in the throttle assembly, so when you release the gas pedal, the clutch desenganges inmediately, so you can change gears more easy without waiting the engine to rev down.
The only problem that i found is when you are in a hill and the engine rpm's aren't enough to keep the clutch enganged. But i think is a great solution for traffic jams, city driving and eldery people, your left leg suffers too much when are in a traffic jam lol

actually brilliant. as large as possible brake drum that will fit in the bell housing, weights and springs aimed at 1450-1500 rpm it would probably feel "correct". the single pivot point on the shoes is awkward for wear, two slide rails (=) may work nicer so the drum and pads can engage same+full diameter, maximum surface area of both shoes. this deserves a "re-visit".
it would require machining slots into the flywheel to locate the slides accurately, press fit and weld. same for cutting slots in the brake shoes for them to slide out, typical brake shoe retainer springs "could" be used, if the slides had a "T" shape at proper height those retainer springs may be unnecessary. in a light 2 seat car this might last a long time.

You can pull the gear out easily. Apply gentle pressure towards neutral, then ease off the throttle. In the moment the gears do not transmit any power they will let you pull it out. Then to shift to next gear you have to rev-match. With some practice it is possible to estimate how much you have to reduce the throttle, but in synchronized gearboxes this gives the synchronizers solid beating anyways. If that were an unsynchronized gearbox, it would have been much easier :).

Sometime back in the late 60s we had a car with a torque converter driven clutch in front of a manual 3 speed transmission, I think it was called a Pontiac a torqueflite. You had a clutch pedal to shift with but yet you could come to a stop without having to depress the clutch and then would take off just like your centrifugal when you gave it the gas. Of course it took off better in 1st gear man 3rd. Really what I think it was, is a wet centrifuge inside a automatic transmission looking torque converter.

  •  Před 4 lety

They don't use that in cars because of different way of using it. Centrifugal clutch is great in start-stop mode, where you either run above threshold, or you idle below. With cars it's quite different as Wlad told. You have to let revs go down almost to idle to be able to shift, it's not acceptable in regular car usage. After all it's completely opposite to dynamic driving. I guess it would not be possible to really drive on higher revs just because you have to let it down to shift anyways.
On the other hand I think it would look very interesting in racing application. Putting bigger springs will increase revs needed to engage, putting a bit more weight on pads will lower it but it will also make threshold much more noticeable. That's probably the issue with weird sound when it engages. For awhile it's not engaged enough. It's partially engaged because of weaker springs but not enough because of low weight. With bigger springs and more weight you would actually feel exact moment when it engages.
And as I mentioned, centrifugal clutch is good in applications, where you can have clear threshold of engaging. It might be used for application in which you will only drive on high revs or it can be used only as slow babushka driver.
