  • We've been awaiting for this one, Chris has spent a lot of time on all of the GS', who better to really get under the skin of the new 2023 BMW R 1300 GS. He spent a full day on the road, then another off road, lots of small changes add up to a better bike all-round. As Chris says, you need to spend some time with this bike before you really get it, book a long test ride!

Yes. 30 seconds in, and Chris is backing it in, doing massive jumps and skids. Every other site : "We ride the new GS on and off road". BikeWorld's Mentalist : "RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!!!!!" I wish I had 10% of your riding skills, but just watching you reminds me that the limits of my bike is .. just me. It's so confidence inspiring, and an utter joy to watch. Cheers from a late 40s viking dane who wants to be you when I grow up. Thanks for being you!

I was listening to Chris speak about the older 1150 GS and all of it resonated true with my 1200S Multistrada as well. Its got that rough lumpy bumpiness, raw aggression and just that hint of imperfection that makes it ever so special an experience every time one is on the saddle. Looking to pick up the 1300 GS next year but I’ll still love my imperfect, old school 1200S MTS to bits.

Chris this is the best review published so far. What a premise at the very beginning: bmw made it better but have they lost the character? And then solid analysis of how the bike behaves in different circumstances. I especially like your focus on adjustable spring rate. This is a first and it seemed to be a breakthrough. As you pointed out it’s responsible for so many good things in terms of handling on this bike. Thank you.

The engine performance and, the handling details and nuances that other reviewers miss (or are simply unaware of), makes this review (and Chris) a standout. Anyone with a performance or technical bent to what they want from the new GS (or any new bike) should watch his reviews. As a current 1250 owner I can't wait to try the new 1300. I have high expectations that, at least for me, the new GS will be everything I wanted my old bike to be while keeping most everything that I liked about it. If the 1300 lives up to my expectations I might be tempted to live with several less bikes in my garage. 😄

  • @ReferenceFidelityComponents

Personally? I don’t care how much “better” they’ve made it, the price is ridiculous for what ought to be a cheaper to produce bike and I think it looks hideous, especially from the front.
I’m a boxer fan but wouldn’t touch the new gs with a bargepole. I’ll be keeping my 1200 and jumping brands when time to change it.
Then again, as with what you say Chris, I’m another that likes “old junk” and was always very happy with the 1200l/c which I felt was the single biggest leap for the boxer evolution in its history. It works for me. I don’t care about unnecessary gadgets that will at some point let you down. Lets face it, the elephant in the room has been bmw reliability. No one likes talking about it but they’re not cheap bikes to own longer term.
I do like the improvement in active suspension but honestly, what were they thinking by dropping the rear light for those bloody stupid all in one indicators? Backwards step in safety without a shadow of a doubt. No centre-stand is a deal breaker too. They’re taking the micky at that price for that alone.

I really appreciate the expert, rider’s perspective details of how the bike is set up and how it performs, regarding the new front and rear suspension configurations, the throttle mapping in the various modes, and the increased differences among the models. It was really quite apt, and fun, to see snippets from Chris’s review of the 2017 R1200GS Rallye. The jumps and skids in this video are very reminiscent of those from years ago, and even the end of day caked dirt looks familiar. I bought that bike back then, based largely on Chris’s review. The new bike seems like the mechanical equivalent of a thirty-something former college athlete who got his or her first “real job,” has worked in offices for years, and has watched their middle increase and their fitness decline. With a determined and sustained effort, they lose the flab and become lean and athletic and full of energy again. The R1300GS is the trimmed down, more taught, more focused kernel of what was hiding inside the R1250GS. Now, for more fun, compare this with Chris’s Bike World review of the Multistrada V4 Rally. Hmm, a real conundrum.

Agreed, but totally irrelevant for 99.9% of riders. I thought we'd moved away from journalists thinking they were MotoGP riders, they took us down the 200BHP sports bike route always going on about power when it's irrelevant on the road. Thankfully the GS arrived and for most riders quicker on the road than a sportsbike! Taking a GS offroad is pretty futile for most riders, they are too big and heavy except for an elite few. Get a 300 - 450 single for off roading and actually enjoy it.

  • @Westside7be

It is better in every way than the 1250 I have. Except the gearbox, which is clunkier again (reminds me of my old 2016 triple Black 1200 gs), the look of the headlight (imho, the previous design was better and this one does look like a toilet seat) the sound is lesser (8:25 I disagree. the engine is noisier at idle than the 1250 and it sounds even more like a sewing machine, and even with the akra they've cut off even more exhaust sound). And yes, it has a tad less character. But if you ride an LC8, you may say that about absolutely all Gs's ever produced.
The 1300 is extremely competent on so many levels and makes you dance like it was a ballerina, even in bad autumn conditions. They've managed the very difficult trick to make it the best all rounder again between all the bikes of its category. It chassis is tighter, more playful, feels lighter as well. Suspension no longer feels like a "magic carpet" like the 1250's does in road mode and is a touch harder, but this doesn't affect comfort. Wind protection from the standard screen is wayyyyy better than the standard screen on the 1250. Goes mighty hard too...you can feel the extra grunt in higher revs, it's more eager to rev. You can also feel the extra torque on the whole rev band. But i'm keeping my 1250 for now, no hard feelings. Would i choose this over a new multistrada? Probably, because the Multistrada V4 cruelly lacks caracter for me, even if it's just as competent (and even more expensive) as the Berliner

13:20 that's the first time some mentioned this and actually described what this does, and assumng this is accurate, that's INSANELY HUGE. Spring rate is the bane of suspension, it's inability to change is what makes harsh bikes harsh and soft bike wallowy. Something that can be controlled on the fly means it's 100% right in every situation. No more worries about rocker rations, motion ratios, progressive springs, because it's all controllable electronically.

Another great review love your explanations so easy too understand.😊don’t like the idea of not having a rear light, indicator lights not sure .

Had three GSs, all great bikes but a bit soft, heavy and tall, especially with my short fat hairy legs. I also hated the awful gearbox even with a quick shifter. So I now ride a lovely Multi V2S which has great suspension, super gearbox, handles far better and is nearly as quick. It also beats a GS hands down on looks and I intended buying the V4S next time, now though I may test ride the new GS, I like it and I think they’ve broadened its appeal, just wish they made a red one🤣. No intention of taking a £20,000+ bike off road but I know it can but it’s still far too heavy.

As an owner of a 2007 GS 1200 who has ridden other generations I can say Chris is spot on in his observations.
Waiting to hear what Dakar podium racer Jimmy Lewis at Dirt Bike Test has to say about the 1300 before deciding.

Always have enjoyed Chris's perspective and drive style.
My Gs's always responded well to pushing slightly on the bar opposite steer in tightening corners, can't say i'm not disappointed they still have a clunky gearbox/shifter.
