Fitness Over Fifty - Documentary

  • I was recently featured in a short TV documentary showing how fitness is becoming a growth trend for the over fifties. In this documentary my fitness activities are shown alongside others of the well-over 50 age group, showing how the trend for fat-down and fit-up - and keeping supple and stretchy - is growing in this age group. Over 50% of UK adults are over 50, and its excellent that this group is both taking its own fitness more seriously, and being addressed by fitness suppliers with dedicated products too.
This made-for-TV documentary was filmed and broadcast earlier this year, and many thanks to director Alex Blakemore for permission to show on CZcams.

Of course you can do it. I'm 60 and still strength train as well as when I started at 28 years old. I started crossfit in my 50s. Never too late to start anything.

My lifting workout motivation at 57 is to stay drug free, remain out of the hospital, and to slow down the aging process as much as possible. Plus I just don't feel right through the day if I skip a workout. Like what the late Jack Lalanne said about training. 'It is not a sprint, but a marathon...

Robert Suhrer - Hi Robert, I absolutely agree on your points. As you have seen in my videos, discovering fitness at the age of 50 having been obese up to that point has changed my life forever, and not a day passes where I regret my decision to change my priorities in life. It sounds like you're the same, well done!

Very inspirational. As I stated in your Facebook posting, I am seriously thinking of going into the fitness game at the age of 60 when I retire from my current job. I just love keeping fit as a hobby and I delivery training at work so I can combine my skills to become a fitness trainer.

Soon after I turned 50 I bought Olympic handles and some light plates to create adjustable dumbbells. It hurt really badly so I asked for an MRI and learned I have degenerative disk disease. Now I will be seeing a physical therapist to learn how to continue moving forward while protecting what is damaged. I'm about to be 51 and my goal is to push myself even harder into this trend towards increased fitness.

I'm 29 now. Started diet, cardio, and lifting when I was 27. Changed my life, I'm strong as hell, big, and much more confident in social situations. I even get some looks from girls quite often. Although I wish I would have started younger, I still feel great.
Now if I could just get my 53yo Dad to get in the gym that would be great!!!

Found this really interesting. I joined the gym just over a year ago at 49 and weighed 15 stone.I remember nearly being sick after my first couple or workouts and I think the trainers were surprised to see me back again but it made me determined to improve.I'm now around 12st 10 at 5ft10 would like to get down to 12 st but finding it very difficult to shift more weight even though I'm pretty strict with calories going in.

54 hitting the grind daily and still in a fighting job for a 2 more years. The biggest issue I face is soreness.
Sleep man I miss real sleep. That’s gone away too as I’ve aged.
I’m reusing to take any enhancement drugs.
On the tough days I still hit it and if I don’t accomplish anything more than stretches or some yoga then I at least did that to get my body going.

Simple rule, listen to what your body says ,be it HIIT or Cardio or weights. Either way,you have to build up over a period of time. Give more time to recover. Remember body is NO longer in the 10s,20s or 30s.

Im 62. I always lifted some weights mainly for sport. Was a crappy rugby player. Train in my garage. 4 times a week. 80 mins per session. Just squat, deadlift bench and accessories. Pretty simple. Train different 8 week blocks. So volume versus intensity. High rep range then next block 3 reps , 5 sets heavy weight. That works. I test maxes maybe 1 time a year

I lost 55 pounds at the age of 49; it was important for me to enter my 50s carrying less weight. What no one seems to want to discuss is the loose skin/loss of elasticity which comes with a large amount of weight loss after years of being obese.

    • @ChrisZarembaFitness
      @ChrisZarembaFitness  Před 4 lety

fuzzycublb - yes, that is a problem. I found it wasn't too bad over much of the body, but the neck area was worst for me. I'd rather have unsightly loose skin that doesn't have medical repercussions than have obesity level bodyfat which do. I'm sure you feel the same.

mens strength and endurance peaks at 35 not in their twenties like some of these people are suggesting. Men also don't just sexually peak at 19 or 20 but we peak multiple times throughout I lives. The problem is that its usually people in their 20's making these judgement calls.

...and don't forget strenght training, powercross, crossfit....many over 50 start running, nothing wrong with that....
but as an added "bonus" to their cardio vascular gains...they get boney and thin and lose muscle mass.....
I'm in better shape than I've ever been in my younger years and I'm 52...OCR runner, crossfitt, powercross ect and I love it..
But most important as stated people need to get off the couch.

Being born in the 60’s, and having watched a man walk on the moon in 69, our generation thought we could do anything. I like to believe the UK was spared the “Rocky Syndrome “ that originated here in the U:S in the 80’s where men literally destroyed and decimated their bodies in pursuit of an unrealistic and unobtainable goal of physical perfection, not realizing the impact to their body when they reached their 50’s. We are paying the price for those mistakes and just want to be healthy 🤕

Healthify My Life Hi, thanks for your question. Obviously it depends on the individual and their goals and variabilities, but generic advice from me for those of any age is to do fasted pre-breakfast cardio most days per week. I alternate days between steady state cardio (40 min cross trainer) and HIIT (20 minutes on treadmill in 2 min fast, about 2 min slow cycles, plus some days it's a run. But as I said it really depends on the individual, there isn't an answer that fits everybody.
