@@NirvanaGuitarsi have found one humbucker that combines them perfectly, the sh6 distortion. its also a ceramic like the super distortion but basically a JB with a different magnet i think if kurt would have been aware of it, this would probably have become his go to pickup. it really can do the nirvana sound as close and versatile as it gets imo
The Vandalism Strat won me over almost every single time - even for the distorted parts. It's just got so much personality and the sound is so precise and musical. It really sings.
I had the black fender jag with the flat silver humbuckers. Loved that guitar but unfortunately it was one of my first guitars and didn’t know how to take great care of it. Still lasted for 4 years loved every minute of it.

I think my favourite sound-wise overall was the Jag-Stang, but I have just never been a fan of the shape. I don't think Kurt was all that hot on it himself either from what I've read but you will certainly know better than I. If I was to choose one to own, it would be the signature Jag (and I do, it's a great guitar). The DiMarzio Super D is my favourite passive pickup (usually I'm an EMG guy). But, damn... that Vandalism strat... it's just too iconic. I need to build me one of those.
I think there is a lot of misinformation regarding how Kurt felt about the Jag-Stang, from what I've gathered I believed he liked it but it was still a work in progress. The Jaguar has been my favorite for years, it's the most versatile and the DiMarzio sounds so good in basically any application! Love the chunky cleans and the thick distortion 🤩
I appreciate your dedication my dude! To me, I hear the Stratocaster and the Jaguar the most in the Nirvana guitar tone. If I had to choose one I’d say the Jaguar had more of the loose, dark jangle and the killer distortion tones but all these guitars will get you close

The Jaguar has the best distorted tone, but overall the Strat wins on clean for me. Although on Heart-Shaped Box, the Jaguar seems to have that extra bite that's on the album recording. Great song choices for the demoes as well! Every era is well-represented.

The strat has the most character. The one with the super distortion has a nice fullness to it, but even distorted the strat just has more character to it
The Jaguar did it for me most consistently. Loved the distorted tone in all instances; the warmth of the clean tone I mostly liked but it was dependent on the song being played. The Jag-Stang surprised me, I really liked a lot of its tones. Sometimes the clean tone was a bit too bright and twangy for my liking though. This sucks as I want to buy one but you kind of need both to enjoy a great variety of tones. If you could own only one, between the Jaguar and the Jag-Stang, which would it be? Help a guy out with a difficult decision!
I understand the struggle, that's why I have a Cobain collection and not just a Cobain guitar lol 😅 As much as I love the Jag-Stang, if I could only have one I'd pick the Jaguar
What dedication you have to Kurt Cobain's sound! Too cool! I'm not a mad Nirvana fan but the clean tones on that strat was unreal, the jag (2nd guitar) had some wonderful tones and I love the competition stripe mustang in how much bass it puts out. They all have their places in the catalogue for sure.

Jaguar with Super Distortion for me every time! Ps I just bought a Hot Rails after watching your vandalism strat build. I then see this and the Hot Rails sounds robbed of treble and dark as hell. Immediate regret.
Great vid! That Jaguar takes the cake for me. It has the meaty push through on the mids. The only spot it felt light was in Heart Shaped Box, but being ear tuned to hearing both guitar parts and the bass line harmonizing with itself, I’d chock it up to that. That Jaguar takes the cake!

Great video! I think it would have been cool if you included the Phase 4 in this comparison. The Jag is my favorite sounding out of them all personally, but Mustangs are my favorite in terms of looks.

Awesome vid.....dont worry about people advising you to get real tube amp. Fender twin tone master is way good enough. Also even of you played these tunes thru stock Fender single coil pick ups I really dont hear much of a difference. Low output pick ups handle stomp boxes better imo .But I realize your staying true to what he used.

The first guitar I learned on (and now own) was the Competition Mustang. The hot rails have seemed "thin" over the past ten years. VERY trebly. Any idea on why that might be? Thank you, again
The jagstang nicely sits in the middle of everything tonewise for me and that's why it's my favorite. Hopefully I'll be able to buy one in the near feature but we'll see
Proto is a dream come true build so it is definitely special, especially after all the mods! I tried to play them in chronological order of when Kurt got them (though it's debatable if he got the Jaguar or Comp Stang first), and I think Skystang's position is funny. Comp stang before it is pretty dark, Proto after it has a lot of high end and Skystang is the like the perfect middle ground between the two!
I'm giving it to the vandalism strat for the distorted sounds and the sky-stang for the cleans. The mustangs sounded pretty dang similar distorted and would be tied for 2nd place in that category. I wouldn't be mad if any of these landed on my doorstep though.
The Jaguar seems to have the best distortion tone to my ears but not crazy about the clean sound on it. Bridge pick up clean tones are not my fave, it’d be cool to hear clean and distorted sounds on the other pickups. Btw What distortion are you using?
I decided to use just the bridge pickups cause that's what Kurt used 95% of the time, and I figured most people would want to hear these for Nirvana tones specifically. I can tell you though that the Jaguar's neck pickup is amazing for cleans, thick but with definition 🤩 for distortion I'm using a Sansamp Classic, same pedal Kurt used on the In Utero tour!
they all sound different (competition stang and jaguar are smoother on the hi end maybe, or something), but also close enough that if i were choosing, it's probably going to be aesthetic driving that choice. i think i like sky-stang the most. but whatever, you do you, everybody else!

Wonderfull comparison!!! Jaguar is my winner, skystang is muddy when distorted, too much low end, but good for clean sound, opposite for the jagstang, bad for cleans but good at distorted, deceived by the 69 competition.
I love my jaguar. But it's hard to choose cause they're all good guitars in their own right. I have them all as well and they are definitely my pride and joy. What did you think of the jagstang reissues? I have one of the originals I think 95/96 is what I looked up on it which makes that one even more special.
In my opinion the Jag-Stang was the best clean tone, it's a little more sonorous. The Jaguar was the best distortion tone, it's very dense, greasy and full. Also I like Fender Mustang Competition tone!

Thank you! I'm sorry but I'm not familiar with the dsl20. The Twin definitely nails it for Nirvana tones, but I think any clean Fender amp can get the job done!
I think it would definitely be best to switch around the guitars for the accompanying songs if you have them, but if not I personally enjoy the warm tone of the Sunburst Fender Jaguar.
The 59 Neck sounds the most unique of all of them. The JB, Hot Rails and 59 Bridge all sound nearly the same. The Super Distortion is the middle ground. My main gripe with humbuckers is how muddy they can sound clean, but the 59 Neck doesn't have that problem and also sounds great distorted. I'm surprised Kurt seemed to prefer JB's
I am working on dialing in Nevermind studio tones! It’s tricky cause so many different guitars and amps were used on it, plus all the processing done in the mix
If I had to rank them from worst to best it would go: 1. Jaguar (best distorted tone) 2. Compstang (best clean tone) 3. Vandalism Strat 4. Skystang 5. Jagstang

Vandalsim Strat was the best, but the Jag-Stang was a close second.
The Blue Competition or the Sonic blue Jagstang for me won almost every one of them

I am working on dialing in Nevermind studio tones! It’s tricky cause so many different guitars and amps were used on it, plus all the processing done in the mix
Just a suggestion, you could do videos of Nirvana songs guitar tutorial/detail breakdown as a die-hard fan, I'll be down to watch that
There are some songs I've been thinking would be fun to have a video of their own!

They sound good back to back

If I had to rank them from worst to best it would go:
1. Jaguar (best distorted tone)
2. Compstang (best clean tone)
3. Vandalism Strat
4. Skystang
5. Jagstang
I think overall, the Jaguar sounds best; the Strat and Jag-Stang tie for second; the Signature Mustang next; with the Competition Mustang last.
