A lot of creative people have issues with math. As a retired teacher I saw this in my students and would use their strengths to help each other. G'day from Victoria Australia Donna Kato. I started my polymer Clay canes a week ago, having purchased mostly all I need. I made a box of canes through the week, orange, lime & lemon slices among others. I created 3 leaf canes yesterday. Today I made a kaleidoscope with 5 saved canes & a few new ones. I just put resin onto the pieces I have made including a selection of the many cane slices I pierced with a skewer. Thanks 👍 for your enthusiastic lessons on caning & crafting.

This is absolutely fabulous! I honestly always thought these canes were mica shift techniques. I really am digging the defined striations mixed a la carte for the optical illusion. To say I don't math well is a gross understatement. 😁 Fortunately I married a human calculator. lol Thanks for sharing another tutorial.

I'm the same - numeric dyslexia is known as dyscalculia. Luckily my husband is good at maths, although gets confused between left and right. He deals with the numbers, I handle directions. Have discovered you while being unwell and have spent many happy hours down the polymer clay rabbit hole on you tube. Have bought some of your books, and others, and once I can sit again will be getting stuck in. No bums-in-jars/lick'n'stick projects for me, starting at the top with some of yours!

My Mum has dyslexia, and I have dyscalculia. The two are so closely related and often comorbid, it surprises me that Mum and I only have one each and each different. But learning my math's struggles had a name, and seeing a doctor to get officially recognized helped me be okay within myself.
It absolutely looks like a ridge! I bet if you photographed it in black and white it would look very dimensional!

As someone with dyscalculia and math's anxiety... I appreciate the minimal math's method. 😅
My Brother and Father are both mathematically gifted. So understand how it can feel like a failure at times. But sometimes our skills just lay elsewhere! I don't like to diagnose online, but you might have dyscalculia like I do. It's dyslexia, but for numbers instead of letters and simply a result of our brains processing information differently. No amount of study and practice will get rid of it, so the best thing we can do is learn those work arounds and focus on the areas we excel at!
thank you, i think i have dyscalculia. i mix up numbers all the time, i can't remember sequences of numbers either. definitely. thank you so much. interesting but geometry makes perfect sense to me and i love it but geometry isn't numbers to me, it's visual, angles and i love it! i hope you watch more tutes and think about subscribing. i'm trying to expand my reach and hopefully reach people who know little or nothing about pc! thanks a lot. your fellow dyscalculia brained friend.
I don’t see anything wrong with either cane. All of them are great. TYFS.
Angle your measuring tool till you get to an easily divisible number. Say you need 3 pieces but its 7.5" wide. Angle the ruler diagonally till you get to meauring 9" then cut the 3 equal piecet at 3" and 6" marks. Simplifies the process.

Regarding the bkack&white skinner blend, you need to have a parabolic proportion with more white than black, otherwise the blend has far too much dark greys. Testing I found out the regular skinner blend cut shape does not work with very bark colours in general.
You’re probably right about that. I think I used my blackout mix that is less black than packaged black but I will give that a go, too! 😊❤️
For things like this, I've switched to using centimeters. They are smaller than inches so instead of doing math with fractions of inches, I can math whole centimeters. SO much easier! (I also use grams for weighting clay for the same reason. The math is just so much easier.)

I agree. If only I could find my cm ruler! Only sort of kidding! I do weight my clay for color mixing, that is sooo much easier, right? Yup! 😊❤️

Great cane thanks for sharing Judy's technique. Just a thought that may help you stack without losing your corners, I see artists who use square cutters and cut the squares and then stack them. Just trying to help, I know we all have our own ways we do things. You are such an inspiration. Thank You for sharing

To figure out how to cut your 2.25 in block into 6 pieces, position the ruler diagonally so you have 3", then divide it into 6 half inch pieces. They won't actually be half inch, but you'll have 6 equal pieces.

I love your work. I’m learning so much from you. I struggle with measuring also. My work around is probably more visual than by math. (Ex: 5 inches- I know 5 divided by 2 is 4 inches. That leaves me with the one in to divide in half. Giving me 2.5). 🤷🏽♀️ It helps me. Probably clear as mud now🫣. Thanks for all the knowledge you’re sharing.

I think the 3D effect depends on where the light area meets the dark area on the next wrapped layer. Also when you Malay out your skinner blend don’t offset it just divide it into as many sections of blend that you want. Then you just add the pure black and pure white stripes like you did on the second one with the white. I think you will find a little more contrast in the dark end. This has been so much fun to watch. After the first one I had to pull out my clay stuff and start working along with you step by step. Oh yeah, I talk to my clay too and have to stop to pick cat hairs out of my work. 😂

My thoughts on it Donna I think it’s the layers both thicker and longer at the taper end and I believe it’s effective on the way it lines up gives that illusion

This cane also reminds me of Ford and Forlano's old work, back when they were Citizen Cane. Perhaps Judy adapted some of their work? Or vice versa? Maybe you can talk Steven Ford or David Forlano into giving you some of their secrets since they're no longer doing that sort of work? I *do* love that you're celebrating Judy Belcher. She was such a wonderful artist and teacher!
I’m sure Judy had them in mind - their gradients were all sheet based. Judy was a real force in our community, it’s still surreal to think that she’s not here…gone too soon.😔
If you mix the shades from the ‘raw’ clay and after that you condition the clay you have no offcuts.

Love your tribute to Judy, I was thinking that after you have made the different gradents instead of stacking them on top of each other and then cutting them down what about if you used a 4, 5, 6 inch square cutter and then once there all cut into the same size squares you can then stack them up on each other to make your stack, hopefully by doing this you dont have to trim so much clay away around the 4 sides, I hope that makes sense ?

Hey Donna, I am really thoroughly enjoying your videos!! I am new to clay, and was absolutely mesmerized by this optical cane! So thank you for sharing and taking the time to figure it out. I will absolutely try this. But I guess I need a pastamachine to make it a little "easier" on my hands. What would happen if you cut the other way to make it thinner? Instead of pinching and pinching...
Of course I understand that it is not possible to thin it with the rolling pin, the stripes would get much wider that way, I guess. Right?? I am not trying to criticize, I am just curious and eager to learn. Regards from Norway, Katla Dragon

Pretty darn perfect from where I sit!.. This is also a perfect example of why Kato Clay is the best for canes. All of that handling and manipulation with warm hands, and with a softer clay would have been a disaster. Ya just gotta have the Kato clay!... I feel your math pain. My father was an MIT graduate. High School Math Teacher, and then Middle School principal. I did NOT inherit the math gene. Many a tearful nights trying to understand my homework. And still traumatized from the 5th grade teacher who would make us stand infront of the class doing long division on the chalkboard. I was always the last one standing. I just couldn't do it. Still can't. Its a miracle I graduated from nursing school. LOL... I think many creative people have the same issue. Creativity and math just don't play well together.... Now, can we discuss that ring you're wearing at the end!? OMG. Love it! ❤

To me it looks like she may have thinned the entire slab just a bit right before rolling it up. Maybe its how she kept each individual line straight up and down and prevented them from doing the pin wheeling you reference in the first attempt? I'm probably not describing what I'm trying to say very well... Just a guess anyway... Boooo to math! Off to work (from home, in the other room lol). Have a good day!

Your ruler has a zero midpoint for center and then the 1” and on up on each side. I find it useful when I don’t want to do math lol

I use the Kato clay almost exclusively. Why is the white always so much softer than any other color? Mine borders on sticky. Is there a way to make it less sticky/soft? I have the conditioning bar, but I'd rather make the white a little less soft than make all the other colors that soft and sticky.
I asked the factory about this, will let you know. Not sure why it’s stickier and softer, I hadn’t much thought about it, just made the other clays softer. Thanks for the comment, I will try to find out. 😊❤️
Hi Rachel, Anna replied re: soft white. There is no change in formula, the clay is just really fresh! It hasn’t advanced so it’s soft. I never leach so I have no advice about that. I fear I have not been very helpful…☹️
