When life gives you oranges, you make limonene
You *Extract* limonene
@@anjelpatel36 ok
Then use that limonene to flovour so. E lemonade
You can extract it from lemons too
@Michael Skinner you can eat it
For anyone who cares, the "dark orange part" of the skin is called the zest, and the white stuff under the zest is called the pith
Zest is nice, the pith (or basically the skin, because it's 95% pith) is gross though.
Pith off, guys!
@Mr Kitrid actually its called jeoff
Now kith
I see you’ve been watching a lot of cooking shows
Impressive! Hey, can you try to extract pectin from orange peels?
+Cody'sLab Thanks! I just looked it up and i had no idea that orange peels had so much pectin in them. I just might do it eventually (I do have a huge amount of stuff i still need to get to though). What in particular is your interest in pectin?
+Nile Red Making Jams and jellies
+Nile Red I know +Cody'sLab make honey and he does have a sugar collection (yeah you read me right) may be for one or another n_n
+Nile Red maybe bioadsorption by reticulated pectin
+NileRed I believe that's one reason you should be careful of distilling shine from orange juice.
1:25 me: why isn't he using a seperatory funnel
him: "and honestly you should probably just use a seperatory funnel"
He can read your mind
He most probably wasn't using a seperatory funnel as he couldn't find it anywhere. Not even in his dictionary.
Just came across your channel and love it! Great work and the quality is pristine!
I did that when I was in college. The scent is pretty powerful and everyone in the building wanted to know what I was doing hahaha.
Wow somehow ended up watching your youtube videos last night and started working on my organic chemistry pre-lab report and noticed this is the exact lab I'm doing this week!!
You can also use liquid CO2 as a solvent! It evaporates and leaves the limonene behind!
Love your videos. Just for clarification, the distillation method you used is called hydrodistillation. In steam distillation you prepare the water steam in separate flask.
I was kinda waiting for you to talk about the limonene a little bit. Looks intriguing. Good video.
It's been a while, great video as always.
Keep up the good work man I love you're videos always clear and understandable !
You should look into extraction under pressure using dry ice! It could be an interesting revisit video. My classmate is working on a project using that method and has had great results!
I have an exam next week, and your vids helped me a lot. Thaaanks!
Dig your stuff! Keep it up. You and Cody's Lab are fantastic.
Congrats on 100K!
Oh shit, extracting terpenoids from stuff. PLEASE DO MORE OF THESE, these are incredible.
Limonene is highly flammable 🧨🧨🧨
love your channel man!
+sten malva Thanks!
This one is very useful, if a bit obvious based on the previous distillations. Thanks mate
Nice video I learned a lot from your other video, just pointing out what you extracted to be precise is orange essential oil which have a content of +-95% of limonene and rest is linalool and other compounds that are the one that contributes to the smell D limonene actually isn’t really important in the scent
It was my project on scienceday
Thanks for this video
You can get more Limonene if you cut the peel carefully, cut off the white stuff, then blend the peel with in water. A lot of limonene is lost if you grate it since the oil can come out of the peel easily and evaporate.
russianrocker1 doesn't the white 'meat' have limonene in it too?
Spooky Wizard very little he would end up running into a lot of issues if you attempted to try and extract if it would end up absorbing a lot of the other stuff instead
borttor MCPE that would explain my crap yields...
I was a UPS driver in Central Florida and picked up some of this product occasionally in 5 gallon paint buckets from a large citrus packer in the city of Frostproof being shipped overnight to Japan. The man on the shipping dock said it was being used for Perfume. It was insured for $32,000 and was just the packed in a hard plastic paint bucket with a metal semi-circle handle, in a plastic bag. In the 1980's, the was a crapload of money. Back then, with the college kids we had working in the Orlando hub, that I have personally seen stack 17" inch computer monitors 10 high just to watch them get knocked over, the chances of it making it all the way were slim. I can't imagine a bucket of this stuff leaking out. The place would smell like citrus for decades. At least with Next Day Air service UPS will only have it 24 hours and wouldn't be handling it long. Once it got to Japan it would be handled by mature adults.
Just when I think I have seen all of your vids, I look something up, and you are doing it. Limonene extraction in this case. =)
I like your channel. You do every-day chemicals which is nice. And you remind me of Nurd rage
+Emil Aliskanovic Thanks! :)
Nile Red reminds me of Nile Red
Liked your channel and subscribed. Please keep uploading great vids like those.
If you really like eating oranges you can probably get a liter of solvent by the next year! Never throw the peels away anymore.
I need to buy some lab equipment lol!
I was just saying that...
lmaoo so i assume you know about its psychoactive properties
@@AC74u what! Is it really psychoactive?
Limonene is not psychoactive it is present in cannabis and THC dissolves in it so its the THC that is psychoactive and not limonene.
the coolest way to spend 300$
Did you try to determine the purity of resulting 'compound', for example, using NMR spectroscopy?
lol as if a NMR spectroscope was standard equipment
Dear NileRed, would you please do a video on extracting the same compound, but using CO2 extraction (using dryice)? That would be very helpful
Damn
NileRed been doing shorts even before shorts where a thing
Awesome! My phone tells me everytime you upload something
Nice I did this experiment 3 weeks ago in class
Just found this, it's great.
Hey, late to the show, but would this process lend itself to a Soxhlet Extraction, or is that overkill or something? Same question about using a fractionating distillation instead of a simple one? Hoping to try this soon!
Did this in grade 10 chemistry !
Very cool!
You should also show how to do this same result but with dry ice.
Nile could I use ethanol in this extraction to get a stronger boil and carry over more limonene or would it be better to use water to raise the temperature to get more limonene to phase change from liquid to gas
The total massive peel
very interesting!
This looks and sounds so different from your current videos, and yet feels familiar
I love your videos and watch a few everyday, loving it ! But I have to point out here that what you end up separating is not limonene but orange essential oil. While it's true that it's mostly limonene (>90%), you'll also have other important terpenes in different proportions depending on the orange strain.
Yeah, that is true. It still is mostly limonene though I guess. In the end we are just doing it for the smell too, so it's okay if it isn't super pure :)
@@NileRed The most important part is the smell, I love citrus!
@@NileRed I want it super pure >:(
🎶Fat-Bottomed flasks, you make the rockin' world go roooouuund~!🎶
SorryNotSorry
Jazz
And the some on the single as "Bicycle Race".
Quite the uproar at the record shops when that
album came out.
That’s a good nature replacement for eye drops
Do other flavor compounds go along with it? If I do this with grapefruit will it smell different? Or do you just get pure limonene in both cases?
add this to some raw distillate and put it in a cart and you've got yourself super lemon haze
Fungi Factory good thinking
This reminds me of a extraction from lemon grass for the synthesis of Delta THC.
Is there an advantage to using a ultrasonic bath in place of a water bath for rotary evaporation?
I first read it as limo-nay-nay and I think I know why I'm not the one doing these videos....What was I saying? oh yeah, great content!
NileRed did you use organic orange for this extraction?
Might be worthwhile to grate the zest directly into a bowl of water to reduce the limonene lost to evaporation before distillation. It's a fairly volatile compound, so I'm guessing the fine shavings must lose a lot of it before being put in the 'stil.
did you use the limonene as a solvent in other videos ?! i cant find
Hi Nile,
I've watched the one on making soaps and thought it would be cool to add some essential oils. After seeing this video I figured that one could probably distill those oneself. And sure there are many videos on YT (often leaning very much towards esotherics), but they all seem to be using steam distillation. As my trusted chemist of choice, I wanted to ask you why this is the best method. Why don't you just take the orange peel in this example and mix it with some organic solvent (I think you used hexane or similar) transfer the essential oils into the hexane separate it from the water and evaporate it? I'm sure there is a good reason and I am just curious what it is ;-). Thanks for you videos!
Great info..
Can i extract limonene from orange by grinding and extract the liquid by washing and distilling it with low temp.
I hated chemistry in school, now I love it
Someday you should make a citral synthesis video.
limonene terpenes are found in some strains of cannabis but its also used as a solvent? so could i technically use it in solvent extraction of delta9thc but the extract being citrus flavour? super critical co2 is used in delta9thc as well these days altho i believe most companies still use butane (added propane increases yield slightly)
It is normal for the extracted the limonene oil to crystallize into shiny white crystals when left open to the air?
Wow didn’t know how much his voice changed over the years
i though limonene was flammable because when you squeeze a peel over flame it burns thanks to this oil . so is it similar to ethanol in this way or that it has solvent properties.
Question! Did the orange last longer after the shavings were taken? My theory would be yes as the limonene would be harmful to the orange
Can I freeze the water leaving limonene behind?
Im questioning cuz i dont have steam distillation apparatus, is there any other way of extracting it without steam or vacuum distillation?
I'm also curious about extracting pectin from orange peels... Or really anywhere. .. I really want one of those little stills now
is this end product a pure substance or is the limonene just the main component?
Is there a way to do this with grain alcohol where the contents would still be safe for consumption if diluted? Working on a limoncello recipe
Why are orange peels grated not blended first?
Is this the same type of lemonene as the terpene found in certain cannabis plants? Asking for a friend.
Can you use lemon or will the yield not be as much?
+Nile Red Is this a commercial process ?can u develope another efficient protocol of extraction for getting maximum yield?
I was at home, brewing tea and pealing an orange while the water was boiling. Some of the Limonene was, unintentionally, directed to the flame, this remind me of my childhood, but also it triggered something else... The URGE to check if Nile did it and captured on video"
doesnt it get oxadized during distillation?
We did this with grapefruit peels in Orgo I :D
can you just boil the zest and the water and use it to dissolve styrofoam?
Can I use the extracted limonene as an alternative ethanol? Will it have the same efficacy as a regular ethanol? Because I'm doing a Science Investigatory Project about Limonene extract. Can someone help me? please
Yay!Another substance I cannot make or extract!
So technicaly saying, because limonene is made just using oranges and water, could you drink the limonene?
What I'm curious about is can acetone be used in place of the vodka method .
Anyone know ?
Just did this, it was fun, got 5 ml from around 12 oranges (pain to peal them) all. Didn't smell at all as I expected and hade a strange taste that reminded very very little of orange, hardly at all which surprised me. If you didn't knew it was from oranges you would probably not had a clue about it either so strange it smelled and tasted.
Cool and thanks
Now after some time I know that this liquid actually contain two type of Limonene where one have a kind of terpentin smell and not taste good at all and the other one taste and smell strongly of orange, but its not easy to part them from each other to get the pure orange variant. I dont really know of a way to do this safely in any way to guarantee not to pollute the orange liquid with anything harmful or such.
Limonene is such a silly word, I'm gonna name one of my characters like that
Limonene is also used in DOG SHAMPOO to kill fleas.
would somebody please tell me if I can do this with the albedo? Do I have to remove the albedo? Thanks!
What is the tempreture should it be?
Can this method be used to extract other terpenes?
can you try making a proper rayon
did you extract limonene or the orange essential oil ? or the orange essential oil which is mostly limonene? and the same question on the cinnamon stuff . I really need to know
You can get a much better yield using a CO2 extraction procedure. We ran this as a lab in Orgo I while learning about optically active compounds. I remember getting a lot of limonene for much less orange peel.
+Michael Molter How did you use CO2?
+Nile Red here is a similar protocol to what we used. "Supposedly" you get supercritical CO2. www.chemistry-blog.com/2009/02/04/chemistry-lab-demonstrations-liquid-co2-extraction/
I thought so. Supercritical CO2 isnt super easy to make at home though.
@@NileRed Not a problem anymore
Could I extract limonene from rehydrated orange peels?
Wow only knew this because of Nile red shorts
Could I use this to flavor THC extractions
How do you extract nobiletin from tangerine peels?
Can you extract the potassium in banana ?
what is the ratio of orange peel and distilled water?
How much limonene did u extracted and
Time required?
which is water and which is limonene
What about flavonoids
What was the temperature
I made some of this and added it to my brothers sweat tea it sucked his jaws in !!! funny he said it kinda tasted good with one hall of an after taste 🤣
