- In this video I show my very simple home made distillery for essential oils and distill rosemary oil. I use a pressure cooker, some copper pipe and a pot (for the condenser). Simple to put together and easy to run. (see below for more information)
Where to get the equipment:
- The cooking pot is as pressure cooker: Try googling "pressure cooker" or "cocotte minute" (in French) You want one that has a removable safety valve. I have an older version of this model, Seb Autocuiseur Inox P0531600 Authentique 10L , new they can be expensive. You may know someone that has one and no longer uses it, that is how I found mine. Not that even though this pot is called a pressure cooker, I don't use the pressure cooker function as there is no pressure created during the process, due to the face that the steam has an outlet through the condenser.
- Condenser:You will have to make this. I was given this by someone that no longer used it ! To make it you will need: - a 10 liter pot (or more) - Small diameter coiled copper piping. Sometimes when you buy copper piping it is already coiled. (Other wise there are many tutorials on You Tube as to how to coil copper piping(.- Some epoxy paste to join the pipe where it leaves the pot.
Connection from pressure cooker to condenser:
- I used a flexible plumbing pipe, it is what I had and happened to fit perfectly without and special joining. Though this works it is not the best solution as the inside of the flexible wire mesh pipe is rubber/plastic. Best would be copper.
Making the oil:
- a fifth of the pressure cooker is filled with water
- I used fresh cut rosemary (a fully packed pressure cooker - about 3 - 4 KG)
- the rosemary is placed on a vegetable steamer basket (stainless steel, folding and collapsible for various size pots)
- the condenser is filled with cold water, I also added blocks of ice and periodically removed the surface hot water and replaced it with cold water and more ice (if I had it) so that the condenser stays cool (needs to stay cool for the condensation process to work.
- I turn the gas on, after a short time the water begins to boil
- the steam coming out of the pressure cooker is condensed in the condenser to a liquid form.
- after a few minutes of distillate production a fine layer of oil begins to form on top of the water (this is the essential oil)
Temperatures:
- as I used no thermometer I have no idea of the actual temperatures in the different elements and during the process.
What comes out of the condenser are two liquids:
1: A large quantity of hydrolat (also known as distillate water or floral water) the hydrolat is slightly perfumed, it is a watery solution.
2: a small quantity of essential oil, this "floats" on top of the watery hydrolat
How to separate the essential oil from the water:
- The essential oil "floats" on top of the water. I used a syringe to remove the water from the oil, then the syringe with a needle to get the oil an put it in a small container.
Quantity of essential oil:
- the full 10 litre pressure cooker gave about 5ml of rosemary essential oil
Distillation time:
- the distillation process takes about 45 minutes
Uses of hydrolat and essential oil:
- there are many uses for the two byproducts, hydorlat and essential oil, of the distillation process. Please use Google to find out the different uses. Or consult your naturopath.

Finally! A CZcamsr who isn’t annoying with too much talk or background music ❤️
Amen!!!
Yeah, the lack of a long-winded background story IS greatly appreciated. :)
Exactly
I think the European CZcamsrs are so much better than those American loud videos. They are cringe.
Exactly he could have made it a 10 minutes video
People are saying thank for no music, what about a big thank you for no long winded intro scene and speech too?
Well said
Thank you
Agreed!
I find how it dribbles out the end disturbing. Maybe a slight bend in the end?
I love that there’s no overcrowding music. Just Natural sounds is great for a change
The absence of any other sounds apart from the originals made a very relaxing and pleasant video, thanks.
I totally agree
Almost ASMR
Dioly DiCaprio I thought so too
Yes.its very important .isnt any parazit
I totally agree too..it was very ASMR
We need more videos like this on CZcams. No talking just straight to the point. Great man.
thank you :)
I totally agree.
Thank you for not using background music.

Indeed
Love the clipping sounds. Snipping, snip, snap, running water.
Om now I understand why its so expensive!
Me too
Actually that wasn't the pure essential oil, from that mount of rosemary he can get about 0,7 ml of essential oil
@@massinissakebane8789 how would you get pure essential oil? By seperating out the hydrosol?
@@PapillonMoth There is different methods for separation, the common one is using decanting, the oil phase would be above the water then you can recover it

10/10 for shooting and editing
Michael, thank you very much !
never seen simple vedio like yours for essential oil through distillation method. Awesome!
thanks
🤔 So that's why essential oils are so expensive... all that rosemery and hard work for 2 or 3mils of oil
Thanks for sharing 👍
:)
Wait,so all the liquid that he collected up to a glass full isn't all essential oil? Just the last part where he used a syringe and needle and stored in a brown bottle, that's the essential oil??
@@ochalambana1983 Yes. He mixes water with the plant material to evaporate the oil alongside the water, so they both pour out of the second pot that has the ice / cold water to condense the vapor back into liquid. Since oil is less dense than water it'll float to the top, hense why he was able to extract using a syringe.
@@outis3948 such a long tidious process for a small amount of oil😱😱. No wonder it costs a fortune to buy different ones😭.
@@ochalambana1983 Yes !
Why in the hell was this so calming to watch!! Education and ASMR rolled into one!!
Education of Nature feels like that
This was life before electronics invaded our space. Calm....reminds me of visits to grandma's house
Soothing water sounds beautiful and to the point I can smell the Rosemary now thank you Lord thank these dear people. 🙏🤍🦚🤗
Very well done, simplistic, easy to follow and no distracting music. I love it.
Thank you !
I feel like im watching a PG rated breaking bad episode. Thank you. Very interesting. I love essential pure oils.
LMAO
Makes you appreciate essential oils when you see what is involved for the return and the concentration of the yield.
Thank you for getting straight into the video!!!!!!

This was beautifully shot and recorded. The natural sounds were amazing. This is art in every way.
Thank you so much for your uplifting comment :)
I’m gobsmacked not only that you know what you’re doing, that there’s no cheesy music, no bloody long winded bullshit and easy to watch tutorial. Thank you
Awesome, now I understand why essential oils are so expensive. Also, I always try to buy from ethically sourced companies. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks
It's not just the visuals but the sound as well that is so calming, a balm for the soul. So much so that you can smell the fragrance of rosemary all the way. So inspiring. Thank you for sharing:)
Thank you Nama for you sensitive and kind comment :)
WOW...all of those rosemary herbs and all of that work in order to get that little bit of essential oil. Much respect to the essential oil industry! ❤💛💙💜💚
Yes essential oil requires a lot of plant material
I love this video as I am seeking to distill lavendar and rosemary. It's totally non-verbal and short in length, yet it says more about an instructional process than many other videos do with their endless words and Hollywood length durations. Well done the maker. Tres Bon.....
Thanks :)
Pour water into the tank of your still.
Add your plant matter to the water.
Bring the pressure cooker to a boil.
Keep an eye on the still.
Filter the collected oil (optional).
Pour the oil into a container for storage as quickly as possible.
Goodluck..
Exactly !
Almost. Plant matter is above the water line on a streaming tray
How much these things costs, how do I buy them and where can I get the pots, coils etc

Grandioso, práctico, sencillo y con la seguridad de ser un aceite esencial puro, muchas gracias por enseñarnos y saludos.
That was so inccredibly informative and you didnt even speak. Thank you for not speaking on and on like everyone else does! Youre amazing!
Ultra-essential video of Essential oils. Sounds of natural elements only makes this video soothing.
I enjoy watching this while I'm in bed at night. It's so soothing and relaxing. Always calms me and puts me to sleep peacefully. 🌿

I love this presentation no music no talking just action.
Wow! now I know why buying essential oils is so expensive. It takes a lot of work and care with a lot of plant resources to make the oils. #Respect.
Now THIS IS essential oil. 👌👍
It certainly is :)

Many people want more videos like that, apparently. No creepy music, no boring "explainations". No "suscribe to my channel", etc. Small is beautiful.
Love the straightforwardness of this video.
Published on my birthday, and probably the most efficient description of the process. Well done, nicely shot, thanks a bunch! Keep it up!

Happy very early birthday! Your dog is really cute
I’m quitting my job today! Full time essential oil making is my future! ( ok, maybe a bit extreme, but really enjoyed the video-thanks!)
Holy cow!! After all this effort and this huge amount of rosemary the outcome is only 5 ml!! No wonder essential oils are so expensive. Thanks alot for sharing I loved the natural atmosphere ❤

Fack me it's that simple to make and the set up too. The other vids. Are set up like some nasa lab. On a ship thanks man
:)
☺😚😆😁😄😃😀
You're funny. But that's true. However, the NASA lab types are producing essential oils in clinically precise and clean ways to eliminate any impurities in the finished product, presumably for commercial type production. Please be very aware that essential oil production with this method, produces a volatile (highly flammable) vapour, and if enough builds up in a non ventilated room, you can quite literally, blow your house up if the concentration of volatile oils in the confined atmosphere meets a naked flame. So yes, it's that simple to get 3rd degree burns over most of your body if you're not aware of the ventilation issue.
jannassary you are right I saw one CZcamsr my god their equipment is like can buy meal for one month

Rosemary essential oil is my favorite. I kill all the plants i try and grow :( bless you for having the green thumb
The chemical engineer in me apprechiates bench-top apparatuses like these. I’ve got rosmary that’s growing wild so perhaps i can give this a grand go. What say you about stripping the stalks and distilling from the separated leaves, or is there much more to extract from the stalk?
If you don't mind, I'm going to use the knowledge that you have so generously shared, and build one of those! Thank you again!
This is incredible. Tysm for this! It's a relief to know I don't have to own a full chemistry set to extract oils. 😅
Awesome, just awesome. I just moved into a house on a bunch of land with I suspect great soil. In Seattle, in a huge oasis in the city. I have a stream runs around 3 sides of the house. A front yard, side yard, greenhouse and a huge huge field not being used. I want to plant a huge garden. Only thing is, I haven't ever gardened before. I make my own body products and I was watching a video on rose essential oil. It's so expensive. I also cook using lots of fresh produce. Would love a garden. terrible waste of space not to have one.
If you do end up getting big on gardening I would offer one major piece of advice. Either layer 2-3 inches of manure on top of your soil, or lightly till it into the topsoil, then add 1-2 inches of wood chips or leaves on top of that. The trick is to spread your seeds before you add the wood chips, and I've had great success with no tilling! You don't kill off any microbes or worms and it's a lot less work. If your savvy or know your local community try contacting ranches or farms for the manure and tree service companies to see if they can drop it off at your property either for free (wood chips and leaves) or a relatively small cost for the manure.
Jenny Simon Troy gave u great ideas. I havent ever gardened before dont give up Watch on youtube videos and documentaries about Paul Gautchi's Back to Eden. He teaches everything you need to know about gardening in 5 hours videos. Watch different tours there are many different videos and years on his garden. He makes everything easy. Nature and gardening is easy peasy u just need patience at the start of your soil over the years everything transforms and gets better as time goes by. I did experience myself it is amazing i do as well have roses and planing on harvesting the flowers to get the aromatic oil its smells soo fragant good lucky honey! God bless you and your family
Just do what feels natural to you, maybe watch a few videos, but gardening is no science, just go by your heart and maybe change things up next year when something didn't work. And since you seem interested in doing things the natural and healthy way, try looking up permaculture, Sepp Holzer specifically - it short, it's the natural way of things, vegetables, herbs and weeds all growing together and animals feeding on them and providing fertilizer, it takes little to no work to care for such a garden and it takes good care of the soil while providing you with vitamin-packed produce. If you have so much water avaiable, raising some fish or crawfish and plants heavily relying on water too. Best of luck!
Jenny Simon That’s amazing!! Congratulations on the property! If you don’t mind my asking; is it expensive around there?
Hi
I retired 8 months ago and have sallied forth with great enthusiasm into converting my rather staid lawn / shrubs / flowers garden (½ your size) into organic vegetable / herb.
Undoubtedly you will be getting much sage and otherwise flowery advice and useful tips...
Mine are a bit mundane...
(i) Get some knee protectors. Scrap Styrofoam packaging works well
(ii) Get some anti-inflammatory back rub... If you're over 40 or not too fit you will need it...
(iii) Get into the habit of putting on gloves immediately you think "garden"
(iv) Ditto (iii) but substitute "gloves" with "hat" and "ankle gumboots (with thin socks)"
You will be amazed at how much better your plants will grow....
This reminds me of perfume movie 😍

Did anyone else fund this video extremely relaxing?
That’s a very nice setup! My parents have a homemade pot and stuff put together for distilling ... but I like yours & definitely will show them. Thanks for sharing!

Love the simplicity and method. Where can I buy the pots you used?thank you for sharing❤
Wahouuu! C'est super.. Bravo :)
thanks
I brought a mini distiller few year's back which I haven't used, thanks a lot didn't know it was soo easy, I thought you need to put it on low flame all night or something! 🍀💜🙏
Brilliant thank you! Side note... My PTSD started playing up with the distallation sounds. I kept thinking I'm hearing a house alarm go off, quite disturbing😅 I'm from Johannesburg.
Second time watching this I don't hear alarms anymore and is actually very soothing.
I don't know why, but I was looking forward to seeing the wilted plants afterward.
This set up looks like you made it yourself. Can you make a video explaining how you did it?
Off to see if youve already done this
I want to know where you got this still?
The nature sounds of this distillation is more realistic
I Love it, and thank you for sharing
Thanks for your comment Debbie
Love the positivity in this comment section! Thanks for sharing this great video 👍🏽

You should look into using a gravy separator for removing the excess water from the final product.
Great tip, thanks !
Could you put it in the freezer and pour off the oil when the water is frozen?
@@gaetanproductions Where can a person purchase this distiller?
Dee Nies that would be awesome to know?!
@CindyKQ I would strongly suggest you not freezing your oil, from what I've read oil won't freeze per say but it will create little crystalize bits that could stick to the ice from the water.
Wow, very cool. Looks like a fun hobby. It took me a minute to understand why a cup full of liquid yealded a 1/4 of a tiny vile but realized you were removing the water off of the oil. Makes my want to buy a still and get a bucket full of lemon peels.

Excellent presentation. Very enlightening! 🙏
This was so beautifully filmed! Like a work of art. Thanks
Beautiful video. I love that pressure cooker. How would I ever find one like that?
Thanks Ruth :) I was lucky, someone gave it to me, they didn't use it any more. They do cost quite a bit.... You definitely can find them new on line. Their different names are: pressure cooker, autocuiseur (in French) and cocotte minute (also in French) Perhaps the models differ depending on the countries,
Not like any pressure cooker I have ever seen because pressure cookers don’t come with cooling coils. I am so envious. Stills online are expensive and complicated.
Looks pretty easy. How long do you let rosemary distille or when do you know when to stop?
About 45 minutes or when I see that no more oil is being produced. Most of the oil was produced in the first 20 to 30 minutes.
Beautifully done. Thank you.
Love the way you film. Wish more videos were this relaxing!
thank you :)

Maybe you can buy in WISH® i saw one.
Such a great share, beautifully presented. How do you like the end product. Does the quality beat what you can buy?
Thanks Tom. The end product is AMAZING ! Knowing where the plant came from (my garden) and making the product myself gives so much satisfaction and for me contributes to the quality of the oil... The perfume of the oil is divine. The process is simple. Quality wise this beats anything being commercially made and sold! This being said I do not have a laboratory at home to analyze and compare what I made.

It would be awesome for those of us who don't know exactly what you are doing if you would have explained what stuff was , how it worked etc. I was really interested. But have no idea what your equipment is or how it works. 😔😔😔
Very simple, as simple as it looks, instructions are in the description area :)
so simple
Connie Williams yes i agree he could have shown how he attached the pipe to that pressure cooker - they are all too new here to use! I hope I can find one like this?
gaetanproductions no they are not I looked you dont show how you attached the pipe to the cooker ..kinda handy for us newbies - these things are expensive!
It's a simple distillator. That's the actual name, not me making fun of anyone. The big pot with the coil is a makeshift leibel condenser. The distiller turns the water into vapors, it's travels through the metal tube, which is attached to the end of the pressure cooker(the simple distiller) using an iron zip tie(idk what it's called honestly). The tube has the same immer diameter as the outer diameter of the end of the pressure cooker. The tube is then attached to a copper coil using an attachment which attaches the outer diameter of the copper coil on one end, and the outer diameter of the metal tube on the other. The copper cool has been twisted around a round object with a diameter smaller than that of the pot and then placed in it. The water and ice are meant to condense(liquify) the vapours into the essential oil.

Wrik Sen hey
The oil always floats at the top, so the water was removed using a syringe, as not to suck up any oil from the top. Once only oil was left, it was put into the brown bottle.
@@imani1193 but, when there is only oil left, is it visibly possible to distinguish the oil from the water?
