If you put the water with the oil in the refrigerator for a while you can remove the oil as a solid. Instead of piping it off.

@@onelittlelamb4030 I'd actually say a freezer might be better, but its because oil and water don't mix, the water will freeze and separate from the oil, so you end up with a purer quality of oil. People do the same thing with alcohol to separate out the water and make the alcohol stronger.
Lavender is my absolute favorite smell and I'm a 17 year old dude, it's just a big smell from my childhood. When I was in Washington state I would always pick lavender around the house and put it in my room 🤣

Hi there! Really enjoyed the video! I just wanted to comment and provide some advice to others out there that aren’t super familiar with the Chemistry. The apparatus being used in the video is basically a more ornate-looking steam distillation set up but the principle of steam distillation remains the same. If you don’t have the money to spend on the apparatus in the video, but you’d still like to distill your own essential oil, you could look into getting lab glassware for steam distillation (e.g. condenser column, round-bottom or Erlenmeyer flask, tubing, a receiving flask, and a dean-stark trap for easier separation of the oil and hydrosol). Glassware still isn’t cheap but, overall, it’s a cheaper option than the set-up in the video and it allows for other kinds of distillation as well other than just steam distillation. Hope this is helpful!

Yes, It takes 750 lavender plants to make 1 gallon of pure oil. It's quite an endeavor.😊

It is true, but also true is how strong it is, one drop of the oil can make 4 cups of lavender perfume.

Have you ever tried Calendula Sav with Lavender? Going to make some this spring/summer. My mom always put Sav on me for burns and scratches but it smelt so icky. 21 and I just started living life. I've been thinking about being as natural as possible and it's made me realize how much I just didn't learn while growing up. Things that are actually important when it comes to living. Got into this because I'm interested in herbal medicine. I read about how lavender, rosemary and a few other plants can be used as painkillers. I want my own garden eventually. Once I have the space because I still am living with my parents.

Evanhealy has hydrosols and essential oils and have been in this industry for some 23 years they make very good products
I have heard of the hydrosol but seen it marketed on body care products like this for example "lavender water, lavender water extract."
Considering the amount of hydrosol that can be extracted, it can be used for bathing, especially since other oils like peppermint oil can be added.
I Purchased my first hydrosol a couple of years ago from an organic company. Rose hydrosol. Benedetta. I love that it came in a dark brown bottle. I used it as a post-shower spray and let it dry on my face and neck.
If you don't mind, I have a couple suggestions. One is an electric heating coil so you don't have to have your stovetop running for 3 hours, though you might need to figure out a setup that works for you. Another is having a large container for water (around 1-200L should be fine) with your pump at the bottom to save on water long term. My last suggestion is having a little bit of tubing going from the still outlet to your little separator there instead of it dripping out and into a funnel. Saves some splashing and costs nothing.
I'd also suggest drying your herbs before extraction, you should get a little more oil out I'm fairly certain.

@jk2782 Thank you so much for the advice! I was wondering if you had any insight into the effectiveness between air drying, dehydrating, and freeze drying? Would one produce more oil or be more beneficial than another? I am considering investing in a freeze dryer and this would be one of the potential uses but I have read some herbs are recommended to be slightly heat treated with a process like dehydrating in the oven to coax more of the properties out. Would appreciate your thoughts!
@@christinemina6449 from my experience, air drying just takes longer than dehydrating. There are some exceptions, seeds done in the dehydrator might not be viable seeds because they heat up too much for example, but for oils, much of a muchness.
A freeze dryer though, I don't have because they are a bit pricey for my budget. I'm sure there's someone out there who has done the research.

Hi - loved your video! As a FYI, pipette is pronounced pie-pet, with the accent on the 2nd syllable (piePET)...and, as a safety comment - NEVER turn off your cooling water until well after your heat source is turned off...(my lab assistant did that to me, and we had a nice explosion! :-)
Pronunciation, It could be a geographical thing I personally say pip et I’m from the north west in the 🇬🇧 but the pronunciation would also depend where about in the uk 🇬🇧 you are from. posh end (south) or rough end (north) hahaha it would be pronounced very differently in Scotland 🏴 or wales 🏴 can’t forget the Irish ☘️ and that is just our little island we call the uk 🇬🇧 so you can imagine it will be pronounced very different all around the world state to state or as we say in the uk county to county, towns or city’s .

It might be regional but it's still pronounced pipe-ette in the scientific & medical industry. Pronouncing things incorrectly "because you've always heard it that way" is your choice, but it also gives people a different impression.
I know this is a one year old comment, but it's a french word. Pip-et is the objectively correct pronunciation. Any regional interpretation of the pronunciation is just that, an interpretation :)

I was looking for a video about alcohol distillation from fruits, however, instead I found your video about essential oil distillation. Thanks for sharing your experience.
I bought 10 ml of lavender and oregano oil in Greece and paid a lot of money for these two small bottles. Now I understand, how precious is each gram of essential oil.
Please save water, put some frozen coolers on the bucket to keep water cool, but don’t waste it away. I found it interesting, a nice option to have home made essential oils and hidrosols. My next step is to learn the whole process that’s fascinating to me. I’m not sure but I think the best water to use for essential oil making is distilled water, might help with the preservation🙂
@J F water is a natural resource that everybody needs, not only humans. I believe that we as humans need to charish every natural resource, even if we have it in abundance.

Nice video. I have had a glass distiller for about a decade but this one looks a lot better to have sitting around. You can just hook your faucet to the condenser on the still, it may use less water. You may check out essential oil separators, it has a small valve at the bottom to drain the water from the oil. The oil can also be frozen and then transferred to a new bottle and any water should be left behind as ice if you are careful, if you want to remove any residual water. Hope you don't mind the suggestions. They really are a lot of fun to experiment with. There are hundreds of plants you can put in there.
Can I ask where did you get a glass distiller from ? thats genius. maybe a glass and copper mix would be the perfect still if there ever was one ...
@@roycropper420 The first 2 Liter was purchased from a company called heartmagic. It included good instructions and easy to understand replacement parts. Still in business, you can find the same turnkey steam distillation apparatuses on Amazon and Ebay.
I still have the first one but wanted to scale it down and purchased individual parts to distill in between 25-1000ml. It can now do a full range of types of distillations depending on the configuration.
Also, you can indeed buy copper mesh to come into contact with the product being distilled if so inclined. It is packed in a reflux, there may be essential oils that would benefit from it. What I know about its uses is for other types of distilling. Anyway, good luck if you give it a shot.

Thank you for sharing. You can just use aluminum foil to wrap the wooden handles of the distiller so it won't burnt by the fire when you center the distiller with the burner.

I very much enjoyed your video. Technically, this operation is not distillation, it’s steam stripping. The separation of the oil and water after condensation is the natural 2 phase layers of an oil and water. The ending is a simple decant step.
