  • This is a video from 4 day on and off trail adventure backpacking trip in Sequoia National Park, June 12th, 2020. I start hiking from Lodgepole and head up to Silliman Lake where I make the first 2020 ascent of Mt Silliman according to the register, I then continue on an on and off trail route to Twin Lakes, Crescent Lake and Ranger Lake, going into Kings Canyon National Park. I hope to go up and over the Tableland if my planned route works. I meet a cool Marmot and have an exciting Bear Encounter. The Views are spectacular and the scenery stunning. Filmed in 4k 60fps on my iPhone 11 Pro Max.
    Be aware that I say Mt Whitney is to the west a couple of times, it is of course to the east of Mt Silliman.

    Watching this one again. That Silliman camp spot is wonderful. And the beautiful lakes along the attempt to reach the table land were worth the trip. Thanks. God bless.

    A gorgeous area, Jarl. Incredible views everywhere. I think I liked the friction slab the best, the waterfalls near the top were very impressive. Of course the views from Mount Silliman were awesome. I liked your marmot friend who seemed to go about his business with no concern for visitors. You were very shrewd to find another route when the hike proved too sketchy. Thanks for sharing and safe journeys.

    Beautiful video Norwegian Explorer! That's my old home territory - I was the Ranger Lake backcountry ranger for a couple of seasons 30+years ago. The NPS stopped having a ranger stationed there after the 2000 season). Climbed Silliman more times than I can remember and never tired of the view all the way to Mt. Whitney and Mt. Russell on the Sierra Crest and to the Palisades and Mt. Goddard in northern Kings Canyon NP. For future reference, the saddle you were intending to cross from Crescent Lake (James Sheep Pass) to the Tablelands is actually fairly easy and the travel once you are on top is easy in several directions. The small lake you stopped at on the way to Crescent Lake is one of two stair stepped lakes we called Morningstar Lakes and the little lake just NW of Lost Lake is Upper Sheep Camp Lake. Very little snow in the Tablelands for this time of year, though not as dry as some of the years in the late 80's.

      @NorwegianXplorer  Před 4 lety +3

      Thank you Bob, this is fantastic information to have, I was wondering if the saddle had a name, could not find any beta, but on my maps it did look doable, I was also considering going straight (south) on the saddle I was already on past Crescent Lake and up the shorter route that had a few snow covered chutes going up on the ridge, but I felt I was running out of time for doing things I wasnt sure about. This is great to know for next time, the area east of Mt Silliman is amazing! There were actually nobody at Ranger Lake when I got there, so I had the whole area east of Silliman Pass to myself. Yes, very little snow, I carried my crampons and Ice axe without using them, I actually carried my 38lb backpack all the way to the gap below Mt Silliman in case I would be able to go down the steep chute to Little Lakes. Thanks for the valuable info:-)

      Bob, I may have met you at Ranger Lake 30+ years ago on my very first extended journey in the Sierra (Deadman Canyon loop). I then got the backpack bug bad, and been just about everywhere in the Sierra. I have been through that area three or four times, and it never gets old. I still plan on getting to Lost Lake, probably from Rowell Meadow. Seville Lakes is nice.

      In 1977 I went on my first backpacking trip to Twin, Ranger, and Lost lakes. I was 16. My mother had hiked to Ranger Lake in the 1950s when she worked at Giant Forest, and recommended it. Went back to the area at least three times. Failed a cross country route to Moose Lake one year due to too much snow in the Tablelands. Summited Silliman twice. Remember leaving a new journal in the summit registry (then an ammo box) because the old one was full, about 1980. Becoming a Backcountry Ranger was my dream job back then. Thanks for the memories Norwegian Xplorer!

    great video. thanks for making the effort to create an index for your video it really helps. I watch your videos straight through and then rerun and take notes if I think I might want to give the trail a try. looking forward to your next video.

    Absolutely stunning ... thank you so much for sharing your adventure. I’m happy to have found your CZcams channel, especially since Joey C doesn’t appear to be posting videos any more. Again, thank you!!

    Thank you so much for all this beauty that you discover for all of as who can't go places like this. I can't stop watching your videos and admire in your knowledge in filming, music arrangement, in everything you do and say. Awesome work. Even though I enjoy that there is no people in your video I get worried when I see a bear close to you. How do you protect yourself from wild animals while you sleep?
    Please be careful. 😊

    Hiked to Silliman Lake via Wuksachi Village just a few days ago. Did Alta Peak two days later, both day hikes. SO fricking awesome!
