    Dedicated to all the fire fighters, rescue workers and everyone who are battling the Creek Fire and other wildfires in the Sierra and other places.
    This is the first part of a 6 day backpacking trip in Sierra Nevada just as the big fires are starting to take off. I start from Horseshoe Meadows and go to Cottonwood Lakes, where I climb Army Pass and summit Mt Langley, a 14000ft high peak. I continue and make my way to the High Sierra Trail in the Miter Basin and go past Sky Blue Lake and over Crabtree Pass into the Crabtree Basin. From there I go down to Crabtree Meadows and down to Guyout Creek where I meet up with friends from my Big SEKI loop video. We go to Guitar Lake and Summit Mt Whitney as the smoke and fires intensifies around us. We Exit at Whitney Portal the day before Inyo National Forrest is closed because of the wildfires.

    So refreshing to see your video of the Sierra’s. I’m in Oregon on the northern coastal mountains, watching our state burn. A community 25 miles away lost 100 homes, while on the cascade side the route we take to get to our cabin in the Oregon outback had at least 4 communities burn this past week. Air quality is the worst in the world right now. Seeing those extended times of just viewing the High Sierra’s was a balm to my soul. Looking forward to part 2 and 3.

    So great Jarl! My son & I did your part 1 as a weekend trip a month ago August 14-16. Old Army Pass and Mt Langley were fantastic and blew his 16 yr old mind to what is accessible to all of us. Thanks for the beautiful film bringing back those great memories. Unfortunately, that weekend also began the tremendous heat in the valley and we experienced a 3 hr thunderstorm at Cottonwood Lake #3 after coming down. That heat and weather was the beginning of all the lightning strikes and ignited so many fires in our state. Was supposed to be just coming home today from a 5 day, 50 mile loop trip (I think you've done before) from Lodgepole through Twin Lakes, Belle Canyon, Deadman Canyon, and Elizabeth Pass. Unfortunately, had to cancel due to smoke and fire danger. So this video will have to do. Especially looking forward to watching Part 2 & 3 as my interest was stoked about Miter Basin after Mt Langley and I checking it out that section on the map. Next summer! Thanks again.

    Very nice. I camped in the Cottonwood Lakes many, many years ago (50±). They were building or improving the trail up New Army Pass at the time. Blasting rocks and such. I recall fishing at Muir Lake...I think the Cottonwood Lakes are or were closed to fishing since they used them for Golden Trout. I've got a long story about being flown into Templeton Meadow (SW of Cottonwoods) as a teen with my sibs and hiking the 20 miles in one day to meet my parents at Cottonwood Lakes and crossing New Army Pass after the sun had set.

This video was so much fun, because you took the same route that I did when I climbed up Cirque Peak via High Lake, about 20 years ago. Great to re-live that hike! Miter Basin is beautiful...and the smoke gives it an 'other-world' feel. I did the North Lake to South Lake Loop last week (off-trail Wednesday) and could smell smoke a couple days, but nothing too bad - I think the worst was at Evolution Lake, but it was relatively clear by the next morning. We saw a thick layer of smoke to the west when we were up on Muir Pass, but otherwise, we really lucked out with the weather. The smoke looked pretty bad in Miter Basin, so I assume the rest of your trip was pretty smoky. Beautiful video Jarl!

    From somewhere around 17:22 and onwards the blueness of that sky is heavenly. This is my definition of truly blue, fair skies. It doesn't look deeper and richer than that. Have you photoshoped it? =S I can't believe it is true color. And panderosas with orange trunks, white rock like somewehere i nthe desert of Saudi Arabia or Oman and vibrant/intense blue sky = combination which boggles my mind. Smoke gave it desertLY taste, Res Sea/Persian Gulf spice to it ;)) It reminded me white/orange mountains along the coasts of Gulf of Aden and Red Sea when I worked on cargo vessels back in the days passing those regions always covered with sandy dust, impenetrable kind of smoke created by the mixture the desert and sea. I really need to visit South Sierras/South East to be exact. I am speechless.

      @NorwegianXplorer  Před 3 lety

      Thank you again, as you climb higher in elevation the blueness of the sky really changes, I think this is prob when I pass 12000 feet it just turns into a deeper blue. Always wanted to see the gulf of Aden, been looking at google maps etc of that area, its somewhat inaccessible though lol

    This vid (watching it again) inspired the first trip I'll take this summer, which follows your route. Friends will go around on the PCT after Langley, but I'll do Miter Basin and Crabtree Pass and rejoin them at the ranger station. I wonder why you didn't drop your pack down around the cutoff trail down to Soldier Lakes before walking to the summit. You're obviously a very strong hiker -- your "slowly" is most people's high gear -- but sill is nice to go up without all that weight, no?

    Spectacular.. as you hike, I follow along on @gaiagps I couldn’t help but wonder, how this geology was all formed, given the big ‘rock pile’ nature of the area.. wiki of course sheds some light.
    “Twenty million years ago, crustal extension associated with the Basin and Range Province caused extensive volcanism in the Sierra.[29] About 10 Ma, the Sierra Nevada started to form when a block of crust between the Coast Range and the Basin and Range Province started to tilt to the west[30] “
    Just amazing.
