That VMA performance took me from being an interested fan to being a full blown LITTLE MONSTER. I was obsessed with everything she did thereafter. That single performance elevated so much for me.

She promised the fame wouldn’t take her life, and after more than a DECADE she’s the living proof that she deserved the spot she is now, she had a vision and fought her ass off to make this wrecked world a little more bearable.
Also, Gaga said this was her first true performance art piece for the world.
The VMAs performance is simply iconic. People actually thought that she was bleeding for real on stage. It also is a perfect segway to the dark themes explored in The Fame Monster. I’m so exited about your reaction to that era, since TFM was filled with BOPS.

I remember watching this live and it changing my whole view on music and art
I'm guessing that Gaga predicted her life (as an artist) through paparazzi mv especially the headlines. On her ARTPOP era, she was betrayed that time and found out that most people in her team are just using her. People said she flopped and most of them assumed that her career was over and some fans turned agains her. Just like in the headline, Gaga hits rock bottom, lady gaga is over, and then when she collaborated with Tony Bennett for Cheek to Cheek, this is where the headline, "Lady no more Gaga". Then she got her reputation back by proving to the world that's she is not just a typical artist especially when she performed a tribute on Oscars and being involved in the film A Star Is Born, the people changed their views about her, and now she is claiming her throne again.
And here she is, taking home some VMAs again.

This is it, this is where the videos become so intriguing and detailed! Paparazzi was the defining moment where I started my Gaga tradition. When this video came out I had a nice buzz going and I'd smoked some herb and I was over at a friend's house and he showed it to me and I was blown away. Since then, there has not been one Gaga video or album that's come out where I haven't kept the tradition going of having a drink and smoking a bowl before I watch or listen lol. You're in for a great time with Fame Monster!

Honestly, Gaga's live performances are just as important as her songs and music videos to understanding her.
The “Telephone” video with Beyoncé is a continuation of the “Paparazzi” music video. If you watch them in order it makes a lot of sense .
I love that comment you made when you said, "the strings add so much tension to the performance". I completely agree. It felt more and more urgent as the performance went on, until, the tragic end. ☠
I like that Gaga is still doing full choreography in her performances too. It's sort of embarrassing how many other artists are just doing the bare minimum by throwing in very simple moves for the chorus so they can hopefully become a tiktok dance.

During the scene where she's falling off the balcony, the black and white background is her way of communicating a downward spiral. And like so many artists when they spiral, the paparazzi are there "yes right there gaga. Beautiful " and as soon as she lands they say "I got the shot"
Makes me think of whitney Houston, amy Winehouse, and so many others. The media was more interested in its marketability than the wellbeing of the artist

Early in her career the Great Danes were in a lot of her music videos. They were also in Poker Face at the start (pool scene), they're in the Telephone music video (which is the 2nd part to this video and also directed by Akerlund) and I think they're in the Love Game video somewhere, too. PS you have the release date for the video wrong. It was released in early summer, not November (her next single, Bad Romance, had already come out by November 2009) and actually won those VMAs at the 2009 VMAs where she performed this performance, which were in late summer.
After you do the eight tracks from The Fame Monster, definitely do her 2009 AMA performance of Bad Romance & Speechless.

Gaga used to say back in the day that all her live performances and music videos were all tied within the same “art expression” of the song, they were all extensions of each other and they all had to have a cohesion to convey the vision she had for each single she put out.
