Durag Nation, it's been far too long since we had a solid, thrilling, power-packed Hulk game. After the largely unfulfilling Marvel's Avengers, the great but niche Marvel's Midnight Suns, and with Hulk taking a backseat in recent the MCU, I think it's high time we dive into how a new, single-player game focused on the Hulk could be crafted to truly capture the essence of the Hulk experience.
In this video, I'm going to be outlining what the ideal Hulk game could look like - from story arcs to gameplay mechanics, and from costumes to the best-suited game engine. Hopefully, this would inspire the developers, and also prove to them that there is an audience thirsty for such a game.
I envision this game as a single player open-world action game driven by Unreal Engine 5, featuring highly destructible environments, because what's the Incredible Hulk without some wanton destruction, right? The leaping, the chaos, the power, all of it needs to be brought to life effectively.
The story would revolve around an explosive gamma bomb incident in Las Vegas, leading to the Hulk's banishment into space by the Illuminati. Ultimately landing on the war-torn planet of Sakaar, Bruce Banner would become a gladiator, liberator, and ruler, before vowing to return to Earth for revenge against those who sent him away. This will be an adaptation of the iconic Planet Hulk and World breaker Hulk stories.
The combat needs to echo the brilliant work of Vince Napoli from God Of War, with an emphasis on Hulk's powerful abilities and potential for devastation. There should be balance, but not at the cost of compromising the sheer power of the Hulk. Cinematic cutscenes, iconic outfits, and an unfolding story that prompts changes in Hulk's look would further elevate the game experience.
Who should develop it? Insomniac's prowess in crafting Marvel games is well-known, but let's not forget about EA who have talented studios like Motive and Respawn too, with their multi-game deal with Marvel and impressive portfolios. They already confirmed a game for Iron Man, so a Hulk one would be the perfect fit for the Ea marvel game lineup.

the og marvel trio is spider-man, wolverine, and hulk. insomniac is making games already with 2 out of the og marvel trio, so hulk might not be as far fetched to make as some may think

He closest you're gonna get now is the prototype games. They were made by the same devs and if you look closely you can see the two share many of the same bones. Hell the jumping animation between Hulk and prototype are the same.

If you have Hulk run and everything in front of him isn’t breaking or dying you’re doing it wrong. I remember ultimate destruction where you charge down a busy street and cars are flattened, destroyed and anyone in the way dies. Hulk is the poster boy for video game destruction and should remain that way

A great Hulk game that has full destructibility would ideally be done with tiny voxels that could deliver a stylized, if not realistic, aesthetic.
Semi-open world with hubs might work best as Hulk is not really a, “do whatever you want, rpg type” character and the fun is explicitly in destruction. Something a more linear approach could achieve.
The combat system would do well to use his “more anger gives him more strength’” theme. Something like if more enemies destroyed in a certain time frame, the more his abilities increase and health is restored.
Draw people in to play as aggressively as possible like how Doom did with those finishing moves. Not a slow tank but a vicious, fast, almost frantic hurricane of damage.
Overall the feel of the game would depend on which Hulk it’s going to focus on.
Not sure what studio could pull that off and you would probably need a NASA rig to run it.
A Devil Hulk skin would be EPIC.

The Incredible Hulk Ultimate Destruction was my all time favorite game. Very therapeutic. 💯
I'd personally go for something mostly original but with inspiration from World War Hulk for the first half and inspiration from Planet Hulk for the second half (for future reference, this would be the earliest part of the insomniac timeline so there's currently only the Hulk and S.H.I.E.L.D. in terms of heroes with Cap still frozen), like he's tricked into causing an extremely large amount of destruction by the Leader's mind control and ends up on the run for the first half of the game and sentenced to isolation in space for the second half before getting back to earth and heading straight towards the Leader's base. There would be 3 major boss battles, Abomination, fought at the 1/3 point, Red Hulk, fought at the 2/3 point, who eventually gets the jump on Hulk, beginning the Planet Hulk styled part, and after that you have an Abomination rematch at the Leader's base with the Leader using his base's defenses to help fight you.

I love the Hulk. One of the first characters to capture my imagination. Mostly because he always draws the bullies and attempts to buffer the situation first as Banner. Switching back and forth it is a unique yin Yang. Anyone would fear a smart infinite powered enemy if they new. Once he transforms all bets are off.
You should also be able to unlock Banners different Hulk personas, Joe Fixit, Professor Hulk, Devil Hulk, Savage Hulk, and Green Scar. They should all have detail and the correct personality, weaknesses,strengths ,etc , associated with that character. They should not just be reskins . Maybe all the different personas will hang out in Banners mindscape . Which is where you'll be able to pick and choose what outfit and character to play with.
But Planet Hulk ~ World War Hulk is World Breaker's Hulk story
It doesn't make sense for other Hulks to participate in it
If anything the Hulk Customization should be like The Spider-Man's Customization from Spider-Man 2000 (for the PSX)
So as it would change the Abilities of Hulk but would't change the story
@aleanddragonITA personally, I think I would go with a different storyline . Planet Hulk and World War Hulk are great. But they don't allow for the bigger picture, and im more concerned about showcasing Hulk as a complete character. So something having to do with the Green Door would be more of my focus.

Ultimate Destruction was the absolute best Hulk game I've ever played. Shame it was never put to PC
I feel like another Hulk game should bring back the threat meter from Ultimate Destruction but also tack on different divisions and organizations that want a piece of the Hulk. The military shouldn't be the only thing attacking you, there should also be organizations made to deal with Hulk like in the Immortal Hulk run and some heroes that pop up every once in a while when they catch wind of Hulk acting out.
Random encounters with heroes and villains on the map would be cool, too. Can't just have Hulk hoping around in a populated area without bringing some type of attention to himself, even if he's not destroying anything 😅
I'd think a single player hulk game would be great, however I'd add some bonus content or levels/ areas such as the Savage land, Sakaar or monster Island and character's/ skins like Abomb, Redhulk, Joe Fixit or Skaar to name a few for long time fans.

Incredible Hulk ultimate destruction was an amazing game and still is, a new version where you can modify stats and unlock (not purchase) different Hulk skins would be cool.
I think a hulk game made by insomniac would be great especially if they tease him in wolverines. I don’t want insomniac to go crazy with the marvel universe but I think a couple of more good projects and maybe even a successful avengers game would be great. Common I think a team with Spider Man, Miles, Wolverine, Hulk, iron man and Deadpool would be a crazy good team and would both be OP and Hilarious

With how much focus was on Norman in the first game, I won’t be surprised at all if he is the main villain and becomes venom. Especially with the teaser at the end when the Symbiote reaches for him.
I still remember when i first got the incredible hulk ultimate destruction, i was in toys R us and couldn't find it at first, but then i quickly realized someone hid the last copy behind other ps2 titles and i knew it after i removed 2 titles then i saw it, i was so happy when i found it, the cashier wasn't but i sure was 😂
there should be a gauge of destruction that triggers the army to come after a certain point, then if he continues, the Avengers arrive, turning him into Bruce, making you return to last checkpoint.
3 things I'd like in a Hulk game:
-choice to transform, with a visually pleasing transformation from Bruce to Hulk (or vice versa)
-being able to use objects as weapons to crush and bend them into other tools or weapons
-Regeneration, much like how we see from Deadpool or wolverine in their games, but more fleshed out
A Hupk game is needed, one where we are allowed to let lose with the Hulk. Just like in Ultimate Destruction, but at a bigger scale.

Being able to transform from Bruce to the Hulk would make it 100x better.
I honestly don't see how it would do anything but waste resources. It would only make sense to use it for a stealth mission, but most people would complain about a stealth mission with Banner in a Hulk game. The rest of the story doesn't fit transforming into Banner at all. So I have no idea how I could justify putting in this ability.

I'd love this. There's also perfect times for you to gain access to your new Tiers of power and strength abilities.
Tier 1 - **Green Goliath:** the strongest tier you can get to on Earth before being sent into space. Once you land on Sakaar, you unlock Tier 2
Tier 2 - **Sakaarson:** the max power level up to the defeat of The Red King. You only can start progressing through Tier 3 when the ship explodes, killing the people you love.
Tier 3 - **Warbound:** upon returning to Earth, you reach close to your pinnacle of might. This won't be surpassed until the final boss.
Tier 4 - **Worldbreaker:** facing off against Sentry, you unlock the ultimate strength. This will last only for the endgame initially, but by travelling back to Sakaar in the post-game and returning to the site of the exploded ship, you can permanently unlock this tier of power for yourself and collect the final powers
For that gamma bomb or whatever it would be cool if it gave him some new mechanic like an enhanced Rage Mode or something that makes him larger and stronger, etc, or something permanent that has no cooldown.

I like your idea! But Ima need it to be more Open world type. Like, when he comes back from space and lands in New York or wherever, we can traverse as hulk, jumping around New York all the way to Westchester to confront Xavier and the X-men. Or randomly running into Street level heroes who try to stop you as you make your way around certain territories of New York State. Like coming across Luke Cage, Spiderman, or even group ambushes. While protecting his new people who came with him but also fulfilling his own missions.

Interesting. I, like many in the comments, have enjoyed the solo Hulk games for what they were at the time. Im not sure I feel a Hulk game is overdo. Not even needed, but simply wanted. I don't have many favorites in life. Hulk is one of three things I genuinely favor in life. I'm just not the type to attach myself to anything. So that means Hulk means a lot to me. With that being said, I don't think we have the game tech to properly develop a Hulk game that's true to his story and powers/abilities.
To put it in perspective, the Hulk games we did get were only because of the Movies. A Hulk game is the same as a Superman game, they both run into the same issues similar to why we don't have an accurately depicted Hulk in the movies. These characters are just too powerful. The world needed for them in the game is immense. Although unreal engine 5 is powerful, I don't think it will be enough, especially for the councils. Not only that, but they would have to pull out all the stops because their target audience would not be Hulk fans, it would have to attract non-Hulk fans and gamers that normally would not play open world games or a game like this just to make a profit. It would cost the studio a lot of money for a character that largely has die-hard fans only. Hulk is not Spider-Man or Batman where you can make any Spider-Man/Batman game and it just sells. Hulk does not have that kind of fan base or general popularity.
I believe a Hulk game would need an open-world foundation or something panel-based like a comic book. If open world, then a multi-open world concept is best. Several open-world games into one. So as an example, we have the Cthulu mythos so to speak, and Hulk has a bit of that vibe to him as his stories tend to be broad in that regard. He's consistently traveling to different worlds, realms, or dimensions. Everything about this Hulk game would need to capture its audience including the game's title, UI, font selection, vibrant colors, etc etc. The graphics would need to push boundaries which include the audio sounds we hear as we play. The music and cut scenes if any would need to feel cinematic. The Hulk mythos is what I refer to when his really good stories come out. Those stories tend to depict several strange characters that would only be in a Hulk story. The game would need to have players in their feels, making them go on a true emotional roller coaster of a ride. I would argue that the title would be something like BRUCE BANNER and Hulk Mythos.
The multi-world aspect would simply be DLC content where each DLC, we get to visit these bizarre locations and are introduced to a full cast of characters. Having a game solely based on Earth won't cut it. We see Hulk visit several places in his comics including his mind or locations like the green door or nightcrawlers realm where he thunder clapped so hard the force echoed for eons lighting up a space that had no light and was impossible to light up. Some of his feats would be actual storyline missions. I don't believe a true Hulk game would primarily benefit from side quests/missions otherwise it's just an updated version of a Hulk game that we've already played.
I would go as far as to say that the player would primarily play as Banner, not Hulk. So 65% as Banner and 35% as Hulk. Those moments we get to play as Hulk, though would be so worth it. It would feel rewarding and epic. All the hard work put in towards the many upgrades and such would shine. I do agree that the world the player plays in needs to be one of the most detailed and interactive worlds a game has ever had which includes its destructibility. The Hulk fight mechanics would need to be impressive. The voice acting needs to be on point. Many key characters would show up as Hulk has interacted with more characters in Marvel than most others have. A simple punch punch punch until the object in the game blows up is not going to suffice. Most objects in any game Hulk has been playable in could be destroyed by him with a flick and yet we gotta beat the hell out of simple baddies just to destroy it/them because Hulk is too powerful.
The tech tree system would be insane. The many unlocks would be crazy. The production would be costly. The list goes on, and that's part of the problem if we want a truly fleshed-out proper Hulk game. On the flip side, maybe an open world isn't part of the answer. It could be something else that a developer just hasn't put together properly yet. The bass from the destruction in the game should give any home sound system a run for its money. It's Hulk, the Hulk parts of the game should be loud because Banner's mind and the Hulk is loud and destructive.

What would make this game really awesome, which I love the idea so far, is if during the gladiator scenes at the end of the night after they've battled have Hulk tell a past adventure of his to help his Warbound go to sleep. It would show the group growing closer and you could get to do a mission thats unlike at all what you are doing in the tournament at the time.. It would be a flashback of previous big adventures the Hulk has been in that you'd get to play through. You could show him saving Rick Jones, His 1st adventure where he met Rocket on Halfworld, a Red Hulk, Zemnu, U-Foes, & Leader rounds, Ultron battle, etc. Could use this time to go threw Hulk Villains since he'll be fighting the heroes later. It would be great to find away for it to end with the Immortal Hulk storyline as well as I'm sure that could make a great game.

I think that much story arc would lead to poor execution by devs. Unless they didn't do the story justice, and the alien planet section was like an intro. But that would make it feel really random. Much beter to just have simplicity and keep Hulk on Earth Rampaging through a bunch of optional cities. Then have devs just focus oin creating a deply planned and rich environment. But I love that you're putting this energy out there. We just need a really well done Hulk game. What's not to love about Hulk games???

Hulk is my favorite super hero and Ultimate Destruction was simply amazing. I want a game like that, ONLY in Unreal Engine 5. It's already been too many years without a solo Hulk game. And the studio i'd pick, is the one that made the Arkham games, because they're the most perfect super hero games i've ever played on every aspect.
The only issue with this game is that it seems to follow the exact story line of Planet Hulk. It's a cool idea but fans will already know the entire story. Insomniacs Spider-Man games are completely original and that makes them more fun. Like right now, we don't even know who Venom is and that mystery is keeping a lot of people up at night but we love it 😂

I don’t know if I agree with the planet hulk plot. But I do agree that hulk ultimate destruction should make a comeback or at least something similar to it. The Hulk has a lot of villains that never really made it to the big screen. The leader, abomination, madman, absorbing man, half life, mercy, flux, devil hulk or whatever. they should go back to the days of the earlier comics were general Ross was chasing the hulk all around the globe. Also, they need to do something with she-hulk. We haven’t had the chance to play her in a video game yet. she was supposed to be a DLC in the avengers game, but canceled it.

I believe Santa Monica or Insomniac studios would be perfect fit for making this games

I love this idea, and ultimate destruction is still my favorite comic book game to date. Spiderman for ps4 was good but not the same. I still have a original Xbox so I can play UD.

That would be boss. It would be really cool if he fought the Avengers and the X men and all their villains
I feel like marvel avengers had so much potential, it couldn’t be that hard to just put content in the game.. marvel has tons of villains that it should have been no reason it wasn’t the greatest hero game ever
I feel like 3 main parts to this game would be way too short.
you get in, are sent to space(time laps cut scene), then come back for a final fight?
I think there are a couple more areas that could be added before you get to that stage. something like this should be a finale.
Arcs involving boss opponents like Red Hulk, Agamemnon, Wendigo, Piecemeal, Absorbing Man, Abomination, Juggernaut. heck a different version of him like Maestro or even The Leader could make their way into it.
overall I'd just want it to be a good decent length game, not something that could be beat in 90 minutes
