The craziest thing to me is how THIS is easier than emulating the N64
Nintendo remaking the game on 3DS was easier than emulating it
Emulation sucks arse anyways.
So I’m all for this bahaha
@@BarrySmoother N64 emulation specifically is what sucks, there do exist great emulators that can do 1-1 emulation. The reason why N64 emulation sucks so much is because the community went pants-on-head-stupid back in the mid 00's by deciding to stop working on the core and instead focus on graphical plugins to enhance the graphics. The end result of that being plugins of dubious use being built on top of 20 year old software.

that was already possible but now its going to be possible for many other games too
SM64 has had an excellent PC port for a very long time now.
I hope all platforms can experience the same joy as Nintendo will when finally.. no one needs to touch hardware or modify hardware or software to get this process working.
Unofficial ports are banned afaik
sm64pc has several different forks and I've tried a few of them, landing on my favorite, which I can't remember at the moment but I'm playing SM64 like it's Odyssey.
The N64 hardware is such a confusing mess, that we got THIS sooner than cycle perfect N64 emulation.
We got the OoT port 2 years ago lol, but I feel like we're just starting to really dip our toes into this as more people are just now discovering it
How is that possible. What ìn the N64 is this confusing Hardware mess
We also got this before we completely decompiled OoT or MM. A task that is ongoing and is estimated to be complete in 2 years.
@@Netbase2000 It was very confusing for many years due to lack of proper documentation, so basically everything had to be implemented through trial and error mostly or through workarounds like "high level emulation". However, nowadays there is even a decent FPGA implementation of N64 (Mister FPGA, it's still work in progress and it's not 100% compatible with every N64 game, but as far as I understand it's only due to Mister FPGA's own hardware restraints and limitations, specifically on memory access latency). And FPGA implementation is as low level as can be, basically meaning that the emulated hardware itself is more or less "solved" and has little to no unknowns or gray areas any more.
@@ReptillianStrikeI'm pretty sure oot is decompiled already

nothing stops you from experiencing these games TODAY, or 10 years ago for that matter... silly zoomie.
@heyjeySigma there are a few things about old gameplay mechanics and controls that i never got used to. for example, the tank controls in early survival horror games made the experience really clunky and boring for me, even though i knew they had a purpose. with this kind of port, people could possibly reinvent these mechanics for a more modern control scheme that, at least for me, it's going to be far from "ruining the horror or difficulty"

The pc can produce mind boggling effects
I had heard about this but oh my god I'm happy to see they actually kept the original texture anti-aliasing of the Nintendo hardware. The emulators I used to use back in the day always got that wrong. The texture anti-aliasing of the N64 had a diagonal bias that made all the pixels of textures non-square. That made the textures of the games show up wrong on all emulators that merely did a bilateral anti-aliasing.
time to learn to code and begin writing new N64 titles
The modding community gonna go nuts with this
I was literally just drifting off into a nap while watching Muta's vids on autoplay, what a time for him to upload :D Yay!!!

oooh! time to recompile Jet Force Gemini! I absolutely love that game, and it would be amazing to be able to not only play it on pc, but also use sound effects that I'm pretty sure haven't seen the light of day in other personal files, like changing sound effects in different games client-side
I remember replaying that game on project64 with some plugin that allowed me to change my keybinds, with a press of a button.
Made it so I could switch between aiming with mouse and then walking with WASD and moving the camera with some other keys.
Maybe this could be done with the recomp?
4:21 That's being VERY generous for Superman 64💀
I would love to see the N64 Bomberman games get recompiled for PC
Waiting for the public release ! play OOT PC port with mods quite a bit, also there's Mario 64+Ray-Tracing , Jak and Daxter, Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Re-Volt, and bunch of other PC ports
It is now morally correct to PC port Nintendo games. And hopefully, it won't be legally stopped this time.
Nintendo can’t legally stop this project because you need to provide an N64 ROM file for the decompiler to well, decompile, something that currently does not have legal precedent for being illegal. Laws around emulation have always been a gray area that nobody wants to touch, the difference is that if Nintendo *thinks* they can win the fight(e.g. Yuzu’s team making a bunch of brash decisions that caused the codebase to become “cursed”) then they will.
The argument against Nintendo here is that if they’re trying to prove the existience of illegally acquired ROMs being used to play games, then they’d ALSO need to take down N64 emulators in general with this at the same time.
Nintendo doesn’t think that’s a battle they can win yet, that’s why Ryujinx went untouched during the Yuzu affair.
Define "Morally correct".
Last I checked, counterfeiting (what is actually going on when you illicitly make more copies of software owned by a company that defends its copyright) hardly fits the definition of "morally correct". The company and its employees paid to develop the game originally. They reserve authority on the production of new copies of said game (like any other piece of software, hardware, or other good).

Fun fact: They're doing the same right now for Jak and Daxter! Jak 1 has a fully complete native PC port and Jak 2 is damn near finished, which Jak 3 to follow. Jak 3 will be a few years though, it takes a LONG time. Just thought I'd mention it to Jak and Daxter fans out there, I just got it yesterday.

Muta, every time you mention GTA V 1.0 on ps3, you make me miss the old fly-lo FM radio station. Glad it's preserved, though
I love that this is also 100% legal since the recompiled code doesn’t have any proprietary things in it, and doesn’t supply any assets by Nintendo.
Amazing stuff
Isn’t Nintendo all about „circumventing the software encryption“ when going after emulators these days? By dumping the rom you already circumventing the copy protection. Like, these 2d sprites and textures or the music , I’m pretty sure are copy righted by nintendo. even if the game code is reverse engineered, these assets for sure are not
@@Axtmoerder you need to supply your own copy of the actual game which contains the assets, therefore you must pay nintendo and/or own the original hardware to be able to do so. nintendo cant tell you how to use the product you bought, you do with it as you wish.
Probably why it has survived this long so far. They don't even give you the ROM either, you have to find that yourself. Very clever:)
@@Axtmoerder A ROM dump, by definition, is copyrighted, thus you don't need the "circumvention" part to go after people hosting them anywhere on the planet. Software+hardware that dumps them DOESN'T fall into it, because you're not decrypting something by raw dumping it. So, all that's left is, the decryption software. That one, you must host on someplace that doesn't give a tenth of a tweet about DMCA. Which is just about everywhere but the USA. It could even be in the USA, like DVD is, because of the interoperability clause, but... it would be a really uphill fight trying to get courts to see "playing N64 games on PC" as reasonable/valid. Then again, the platform is discontinued so, it might work, but too much $$$ to be worth it.
All it takes is a court case that is in favor of Nintendo. This is all a grey area that I hope stays that way
Imagine Nintendo sueing them, then hiring them to create a PC Nintendo storefront.
We can only hope. Not the lawsuit part, but Nintendo finally porting their games to PC.
WOOO! FINALLY GETTING CONKER'S BAD FUR DAY ON PC!!!!!!!

With gyro aiming..... That'd be so helpful
Honestly, Nintendo should see this as a win. Emulation can be taxing on a system and not perfect requiring upscaling techinques that aren't progressing quick or well enough for the current gaming climate and a recomplier would elimate most of their issues and knock things down to: Can we get it recomplied? Can we then port it the current Nintendo console?
Any company Nintendo would outsource any remaster to would also have those same issues only and no matter how you look at it, it would be a full remaster with the bells and whistles that have been promised for years
Nintendo even has used emulators before that weren't made by them, in WarioWare for the Wii there's a scene (I think an image really) that if you check the files, in the places you can't see in the image there's the icon of a japanese emulator
Here before it gets taken down.

I think game preservation is super important. This is super cool and I can't wait to use this for my purposes ok keeping my library intact on to the future.
Nice, this is cool. I’m sure there is some hardware that still needs to be emulated such as the way memory works. Many times these consoles had convoluted memory structures to divide rom and several layers of ram. This would have to be managed by the binary in some way. Also, I’m sure they had their own implementation of the display. You’d probably either have to insert your own renderer or just draw pixels to a frame buffer. Either way, very cool stuff
Hope someone makes a goldeneye port 🤞

My friend had to contact a friend of a friend to purchase a PS3 and then track down a copy of MGS4 at a random used game store just so he could play it, because it's nearly impossible to get it emulated. That's absurd.
I wish, and I know this is a hopeless wish, that people will approach Nintendo and be like "Look, we can do this for you, and you can then sell these games again and make a metric ass-tonne of money."
Sadly there would be some paperwork required that Nintendo wouldn't want to bother doing because they are dumb. Unlike Sega who hired modders to make a game, Nintendo rejected fans who were willing to give them translations they themselves did so Nintendo could legally port the rest of the Mother Series ( Earthbound) for English speaking audiences. The translators themselves even stated it would be given away for free, and they wouldn't sue for infringement of work. Roms would be ready to print and Nintendo would get to keep all the profits. Instead Nintendo listed some BS reason ( don't remember exaxtly) and rejected the offer. We at least now have the original Mother with Switch online. Don't know if Mother 3 is available for the US since I don't have the extended membership ( am on a family plan, so I can save money lol).
