My father bought one of these cars in 1967, I have to admit it was the fineset car I have ever driven, and I've driven a lot in the intervening years. I was 20 years old then, and since I have driven the following cars which he owned. Bentley T series, Jaguar E type V12, Jaguar 420, Volvo P1800, Jaguar XJ 4.2, Mercedes 350SE, Range Rover 3.5, and Peugeot 404 coupe. None of them ever gave me as much pleasure as this car. An absolute classic. They don't make cars like this anymore. The finish and refinement was superb. There is no othe word for it.
I remember with great joy my neighbour taking me out on an evening drive in his 280 SE 3.5 coupe, reaching around 180 km/h. I was around 8 years old and it was an ecstatic experience.
Impressive. I was coming back from Long island, NY to Maryland in 38 years ago in my 68 250S running 90+ mph with newer Mercedes, BMW and Volvo sedans and blew the transmission at the Delaware Memorial Bridge toll booth. Fortunately my grandparents lived in Pennsville so they came to get me. Car was towed and rebuilt gearbox installed for $1,800.00 and I was on my way...after a loan co-signed by my father.
Thanks for taking us for a ride in your coupe'. Love the sound of these injected 6 cylinders. I own a '66 W111 Coupe, with 4 on the floor and sunroof. The power these engines make always puts a smile on my face!
@Joniel120 M129. Maximum power: DIN 150.1 PS (148 bhp) (110.4 kW) at 5500 rpm Specific output: DIN 59.3 bhp/litre 0.97 bhp/cu in Maximum torque: DIN 216.0 Nm (159 ft·lb) (22 kgm) at 4200 rpm /J
@guillermovdes Correct, they are from the beginning of the 70`s and size 6,5Jx14.(Alloy wheels were offered as an option for the first time in august 1970) Original wheels was pressed steel wheels 6Jx14 with domed hub caps(same as the 220SE) and plain beauty rings./Jonas
The engine is M129 and the 2-door version(coupe) share the same chassis as the 4 door sedan(fintail). I haven´t heard about cooling problems with the M129 but any way, in this case the engine was "forced" just for a short time of period and that shouldn´t cause any problems. Of course, this race was only a single happening to show the performance. My opinion is that the coupe belongs in the fintail family. even without fins. I have placed new comments in the video if you are interested. /J
It needs to be repaired, some electrical component inside seems to be broken. It only works hot summer days. I just have to find somebody who is capable to fix it.
Very nice car, I have a W108 250SE saloon/sedan with same engine. You need to fix your tacho though :) (you're lucky to have one- no tacho in the 6-cyl 108s...)
I sow several advert of 250SE and for same year '66 there are models with automatic gearbox on the steering column and some models with gear-liver down between the sits - can someone explain me what is the differences pleas. Is the '66 the year of some facelift?
+benzfen The choice whether to have the shifter on the steering column or on the middle tunnel was free to the customer the Coupes had it as standard between the seats. The Automatik was an option for about 2000 DM or 500 USD at that time.
Hi! I really like your car, and how do you improve it! Please tell me more- how you did the manual gear selection for automatic transmission? Or where can i read about it?Thanks a lot!!!
Exclusively for wealthy people ! (For others, who can hardly pay their rents each month, in spite of working real hard like slaves : you can always dream, watching this; at least it's free !!!)
It´s almost irresponsable to push an old Mercedes that hard in the open road. The idle is awful. That car is in need of a good tappet clearance check. You are risking droping a guide with expensive effects, or worst, the chain may miss a tooth with catastrophic effects for the whole engine.
What do you mean by "idle is awful", did you work a lot with 60s Mercedes engines so you have a basis to compare? And do these particular engines develop bigger clearance due to wear, as opposite to most of the engines get reduced clearance due to wear as the valve plate gets worn and the valves relocate upwards?

Ich liebe diesen SE Hochkühler, das Coupé ist der schönste und beste Nachkriegswagen, den Mercedes gebaut hat, danach ging es bergab!

Really nice, We've got an Old W123 280CE i Love that 6 Cylinder Sound !!
And your Fin Tail goes really good.. i think our W123 would have to fight !
Of course 280E is faster and should be able to hit or come close to 220 km/h on the odometer.
@cliff19851985 The stacked headlights was for the US market and I think it was
possible to get them as an option in Europe.
bro your car changes gear faster than my automatic 1998 c-class w202 LOOL
It needs to be repaired, some electrical component inside
seems to be broken. It only works hot summer days.

It was an option. Biggest changes happened in 65 and 63.

I cheers to that!
Nice ride. I have a 67' 250S and driving it is the best. You have to fix the wipers and tach, please.

Is it Salvage title?
fred faridsedehi No!
That was also downhill.
@awin123 Watch the rear of the car and you'll see
Der 2,5 l Motor bringt mit seinem starken Durchzug eine zufriedenstellende Fahrleistung mein 280 SE ist auch nicht schneller.
@IFES2011 Jäpp!
Why ? Driver need another "spooort" car ,to show acceleration ...Classic MB is not a vehicle for "superdrivers"...
Sweden
En mycket fin bil men det känns lite som helgeråd att köra skiten ur en så gammal bil.
Mine can only reach 160 :(
Wrong wheels, dented bodywork and a towbar ...hmmmm Engine is sounding very tappety too.
Those wheels ruin the look.....
you look like shit and so what ???
Sad to see a sweet old car being driven like an animal! Thumbs down for your driving.....
Zeig mal bis 220!!!
