Driving a mile in The Emerald Bullet 1962 Mercedes W111

  • Take a drive with me in the Emerald Bullet. I feel more torque with the 2.8 liter motor than I did with the 2.2 liter. My butt dynometer says it is much faster. How does the engine sound to you? Is this what a 2.8 liter Mercedes Benz engine is supposed to sound like? Notice all the gauges and the clock working.

What a fantastic car these were. I remember driving my father's 220SE, W111 in 1966. I was 19 years old ,, and no car today comes even close to the pleasure it gave me Thank you for making the video. You lucky bastard to own one. ! Only wish I could afford one of these in Australia today. Driverless cars are the future ? Thank god I probably won't live to see it.

You don't need to put first gear unless you came to a complete stop. Just depress the clutch and then release it slowly while acelerating and you can keep second gear while almost stopped. And no it's not a 3 speed, it's a 4 speed.

Engine certainly sounds 6-cylinder..more smooth running & subdued sounding when revved up unlike the 4-cylinders which become harsh & loud.
I believe in those days they did have a 6-cylinder petrol engine of 2.2 litre so whether 2.2 or 2.3 (in the newer 230.6 W115) or 2.8 W108) etc. the sound i hear here all 'belongs' to that era of Mercedes-Benz 6-cylinder engines, which of course is somewhat different from their newer 6-cylinders from W116 onwards.
On a sidenote, if you want to get hear something quite similar, the Citaro bus (with the smaller 6.4 litre in-line 6 diesel) sounds something like that in a kick-down acceleration mode ! I understand these old car engines are from a very different era from a modern bus engine but (surprise or not) they can sound alike too..being 6-cylinder in configuration i'll say is the basic ingredient behind it.

I now I can't pass 3200RPM or it will shift to the next gear. I didn't know it was going fast until some neigbhbours told me they were trying to catch me up ( we live in a hilly zone) and no wonder what they did, they just couldn't

Looks a nice car. I think you forgot to use your indicators though. Or didn't they have them for this model year?
Current posh cars do that a lot too, turning into a street without using blinkers, so you have to let another 50 or so cars pass before you can get to the other side of the road, instead of being able to go while the car turning in slows down traffic.

yeah that is a thing of the past unfortunately, here in sweden the diesel has gone up again and is more expensive than the petrol.
i drive a 123 240D which i picked up from a field almost 5 years ago, but its in pretty bad nick now, rear axle is crap, front suspension arm has snapped, brake mastercylinder most likely gone too or one of the brake curcuits, and the rust of course but it runs brilliantly fires up like nothing, and none of the w123s ive driven are as easy to shift as mine.
