I visited Kannappa Chettiyar's palatial residence on 2nd August 2023, located in Nattarasan Kottai, Sivaganga district, near the Kannudaya Nayagi Amman temple. This traditional Chettiyar structure built around 90 years back,boasts 60 storerooms, a marriage hall, a visitor's hall, a kitchen, special areas for men and women, and other captivating features. The 30,000 square feet building is constructed with wood imported from Burma, Italian tiles, a variety of glasses, stylized fans, and wood crafts. The walls are adorned with shells, lime, and egg polish. Having recently relocated from Chennai, Kannappa Chettiyar, his wife, and servants reside in the building, facing the challenges of managing such an intricate structure. His family members served as accountants for the Sethupathis who governed Ramanathapuram and Sivaganga. In earlier years, they initiated schools, hospitals, and provided support to the common people, particularly during the pre-independence era.
