You not trying to lift the top off.. you are trying to move the internal locking mechanism inside the round part.. the magnet need only be strong enough to do this .. you achieved this by tapping the magnet to the top
I used a magnet that is sold for Magnet fishing and it popped out the first tap. Thank you We got some shoes for school sent to us from JC penney and they sent the shoes with the thingy on it.
almost burned the house trying to get a tag off a jean they didn't take it off and bought it in another state, lost receipt and didn't want to come across as someone that got something stolen in the store :D and you're telling me I could have just bought a magnet?

Thanks so much! Just bought several tags to use at my flea market booth and need to get them apart. The store has removers but i need one at home.
Since the small magnet isn't strong enough to lift the top off, maybe the other way around would work so the top could just fall down off.
