  • At over $800, the newest iPhone and Samsung Galaxy smartphones are among the priciest you can buy (at least in the mainstream). But as Crocodile Dundee might say, “that’s not expensive - this is expensive.” I spent a day with the 2017 model of the Vertu Constellation: leather-and-metal smartphone with a button made of ruby, a screen made of sapphire, and pretty good taste in steakhouses. (And all that for just $6000!) Join me for the MrMobile hands-on of the Vertu Constellation 2017.

    Finally, an unbiased and honest review of a Vertu phone, from a person who doesn't drive a Lamborghini ;) I've been a huge fan of Vertu back in the days, when brickphones were still a thing. I think the reason why Vertu was more popular back then, was because the "outside" of a phone was more important than the "inside". It was a time when manufacturers could choose their own, proprietory software for a phone, not having to stick to Android and therefore make a phone more outstanding. Also, apart from internal space, it didn't really matter if there was a Snapdragon processor or QHD Display built into it, as long as the outside material is crafted from platinum and wrapped with crocodile leather. I hope you get my point, I just think it's harder to sell "premium phones" today because people pay so much attention on the internal specs!!

    • @TheMrMobile
      @TheMrMobile  Před 7 lety +26

      +Manuel J. Good points! I do miss the era where craftsmanship was really valued.

    • @itxofficial8281
      @itxofficial8281 Před 7 lety +7

      Thanks for the reply! I think the main reason was that the front of a phone was unique, and therefore more appealing to a rich person. Nowadays, every phone literally looks the same on the front! For example, let's compare the 2016 Constellation to the 2006 model: The 2016 sports a single sapphire button, whereas in 2006, the whole entire front keypad was made out of diamonds!! That alone could be a major selling point for your average rich consumer ;)

    • @evacody1249
      @evacody1249 Před 7 lety +1

      The problem there is craftsmanship matter when it comes to your house or car. When it comes to a computer or phone craftsmanship is not all that impotent.
      Vertu could have the best craftsmanship in the world but the minute you uses out dated tech and then slap on windows vista the person using the Alienware computer is going to laugh his as off at that person.
      Craftsmanship only goes so far when it comes to a computer and phone.
      Craftsmanship when it comes to a car, house, boat, or plane yeah that impotent. Because for three of those it's my life is on the line based on how well it's made. With the other is a place I live.

    Great video as always man. I like niche luxury products in tech (I bought the new Tag Modular Connected Android Wear watch), but I'd still like the given product to do something technically better than other products in it's category. Aside from the Concierge, which isn't really an output of the phone, I don't see many compelling reasons to own one of these. Even as a pure luxury item I don't know how effective it is... most people don't know Vertu so you'd constantly be explaining how fancy your phone is to get across the exclusivity factor.

    It does seem you're paying for the premium materials used. However Vertu wont have the bonus of cheaper manufacturing on a large scale like Samsung and so that's also probably put into the price too.
    If Samsung did a premium version with concierge i think there would be a market for that. Saying that what Vertu does have is the brand of being a small, premium company which elitists will love rather than buying a fancy ol' sammy.

    I have one of these and its a joy to use everyday. I also own wrist watches that are several times higher priced than my vertu phone. Its about the artistry and quality of the device or time piece. Most people have no idea what a vertu is so there is really no “bing” or “flex” factor in purchase of something like this just as most people have never heard of Jeager LeCoultre wrist watches and dont realize how well crafted they are.

    It Was A Pretty Premium Phone But To Me As A Kid It Was Useless Since It Only Had 1 Game

    It Didnt Even Had A Touch Screen, Which Was Newly introduced In My Country When My Uncle Bought The Vertu
    And Cuz My Mother Had A Touch Screen, i Think Thats Why I Didnt Gave A Flying Fuck About it

And add two 256GB microSD card for both the s8 plus and the tab s3.
      In the end. You should have more than $2k. So the fact that I could buy more gadgets for a budget of 6k means its not a good idea to spend that level of expensiveness just to get one small unit.

    I think that the point of the much higher price tag than other manufacturers, is to limit their consumer market to the kind of people who can spend $6k on a phone and not think twice. Offering one at a lower price point opens their demographic to an audience they probably don't care to do business with. That being said I'm perfectly fine never owning one of the Vertu line of phones, I'm happy with my iPhone or Samsung phones
