How To Let Go of Mistakes - Teal Swan

  • In a perfect world, there would be absolutely no connection between self worth and mistakes. It is important to step back and realize that at the time that we make a mistake, we are convinced that we are in fact making the best decision. It is only upon reflection that we can see that our decision may not have been the best one.
In a perfect world, there would be absolutely no connection between self worth and mistakes. When we make mistakes as children, we are corrected for these mistakes in often unloving ways. The conclusion we draw when we are corrected, is that when we make mistakes, we are bad. This conclusion follows us into adulthood and we internalize the role of the "corrections officer". When we internalize the role of the corrections officer, we criticize, blame and condemn ourselves for our mistakes.
It is important to step back and realize that at the time that we make a mistake, we are convinced that we are in fact making the best decision. We are doing what makes sense and what seems reasonable to us at the time. We always choose the action that seems the most likely to meet our needs in a given moment. It is only upon reflection that we can see that our decision may not have been the best one.
This is why saying that something is a "mistake" is only something that we can say in retrospect. We make decisions based on our level of awareness. Our level of awareness changes, so we can only say that something is a mistake after our awareness changes. Every single person does what they think is right in the moment. If we judge ourselves and our worth based on that retrospection, what we are doing, is judging our past selves based on today's expanded perspective.
Talk about unfair. How fair is it to yourself to expect yourself to know what you did not know at the time?
If you didn't think something was the best thing to do at the time, you would not have done it. We make a lot of these choices that we think are best, but that turn out to be mistakes, but the truth still remains that we only make mistakes because we are not aware that they are mistakes at the time.
The key to loving yourself even when you make a mistake is to change your perspective about the mistake that you have made; in other words, to reframe the mistake. In order to reframe our mistakes, we must change our point of view and therefore our interpretation of the mistake that we have made. We have to look for the value hidden in the mistake and then find thoughts that enable us to let go of the self blame, self criticism and self condemnation we feel for having made the mistake. When you are reframing a mistake, you are looking to give the mistake positive meaning instead of negative meaning.

There are some grave mistakes that I will never see as gifts. Mistakes like taking a life or making someone suffer for long. Sometimes those grave mistakes are from not learning some very basic lessons, which makes them too pricey for what they're worth. The saying "I can't do this for the life of me" applies here, but that can be overcome too.
Self-cultivation is valuable, so much so that by doing it you can save lives you might've taken otherwise, and save people from suffering you'd had caused them otherwise. To allow them live more fulfilling lives.

I can't see my mistakes as a gift - some opportunities never come again. E.g. I regret that I didn't travel in my youth when I had time and stamina and before covid and the vaccines. Now I'm older and tired, and just started a family and who knows if we can ever travel again in this covid world!
We are struggling to get by, and I'm homeschooling so there is no income left over for travel anyway. Plus, my husband's job conditions have become SO bad that he has to look for another but he's only started a new career path and may not be able to find work...and I don't know if I can ever travel and by the time I can, that I can do cliff-diving, scuba diving, water-raft or dance with the wolves or climb a mountain or anything that requires youth. Even lately we get tired after 2 hours being out at a leisurely event! Plus, we don't want to take that experimental covid vaccine...

To me the most crucial thing would be redefining the term "mistake". There are no mistakes only decisions that led to an outcome that was not in alignment with our true self. Thus they are valuable lessons. There's no reason to "let go" of these experiences. On the contrary: we should appreciate and incorporate them as important phases of discovering more of who we are.

What if the mistake is one that we made believing that it was in alignment with our highest self? I felt genuinely that i was being a force of good, and that I was standing in my power. But instead, I was a force of destruction. Its caused me to doubt my self, my intuition, and my heart.

Perfect explanation to ease my regret for a mistake I made recently. This mistake has been tormenting me for a week - I became extremely moody and anxious which affected my family too. I wish the mistake did not happen but as you also mentioned, I made it because of my desire at that moment. However, from this mistake, i have gained a new perspective on people and what I should be focusing on in my life in the future. Also, even if I haven't made this "mistake", I believe I would have made it someday in the future anyway because temptation is everywhere ~ I trust this experience will do me good in the long-term. Thanks again, Teal. 2 years ago I had depression and I watched your videos to feel better. please make more on topics such as facing criticisms, stress, low-self esteem, being betrayed, letting go, heartbreaks, etc. Really appreciate. You are an angel.

Hi Teal. Could you please do a video on forgiving others or letting go of the need for justice? I'm finding things distressing at the moment in terms of world events (war, etc). At the same time, i'm finding myself looking for justice for all of the hurt that was done to me as a child. I have watched this video but I would like more guidance on how to let go of having to receive justice for what i've been through. I hope this is clear. And beat ourself up when we realise our fault somewhere. And we carry this burden which even time doesnt heal.

For myself intention is my guide for making creative use from my mistakes. If my choice is out of ignorance of the result, then I have learned that result from that choice, given similar situations. If I see that my mistake was from a selfish desire that I don't want to see within myself, then I am able to it bring forth, if I have the courage to do so. In this way I am able to correct any mistake in a honest way. This gets my true essence of the hook and keeps my ego in check. Result: growth.

Thank you so much Teal. Even though ive reached conclusions on my own, it helps so much to hear you say it. I made the same mistake twice in my life and I’ve been beating myself up about it for years. I let it go for a while and now I’m ready to let it go again. Thank you.

Thank you so much for this video. I wrote down this advice and long with my own tips/guide answering questions like "What valuable thing did this experience teach me that I would not have known otherwise about myself, another person, or the world?" (loved this question, great idea :D). It really helped my release all of my negativity, guilt, shame, etc. I feel amazing now :) thank you!

This was just so helpful. I remembered a time I was on vacation with my parents and we were walking toward a pier. And i saw a big smooth grassy area spread out before me so I separated from my parents and started running to allow my self the fun of...running along a natural clearing. After the first couple of strides I found myself ankle deep in water. I was so disappointed. I didn't want my sandels to get all wet. I looked back at my mom and her expression was one that I took on as "you blew it". I felt so shamed for making this mistake. But Teal's video here made me realize that I abandoned my desire, to run through the field of green to try and be perfect so my mom would want me more. (That energy is a different story). This video helped me see an aspect of me I really enjoyed, a desire that I hope to rekindle in me.

Holy! So what you're saying is mistakes happen in times of limited awareness, or in other words, in darkness. This is the concept of dark and light people need to be aware of. Even if they're not in perfect light, it's good to acknowledge darkness where it resides. It allows us to forgive those who act in darkness much easier.

Teal , thank you for your wisdom it is very helpful, I was always embarrassed to be contradictory to the way I used to be, but it is the old me.

It is all about the piscean age (duality) we are conditioned to think good, bad, suffering etc, it's just part of the era. We are moving into the aquarian age which is age of enlightenment. Mistakes? Or is that we needed the experience that we call a mistake? We are all having this crazy experience of being a spirit in human form.
    It's tricky business :D
Thank you Teal for shining your love~light

Teal knows shes beautiful Wearing make up is a part of expressing your feminine nature, i stopped wearing makeup and kept seeing Teals videos but not watchin them because i didnt take long haired, pretty, make up face girls seriously. then i watched her episode on parenting, and felt stupid.
Teal teaches that wearing make up isnt wrong at all, embracing the traditions of this culture wefind ourselves is another way of expressing source. if it feels good or is fun do it. make up can be very fun
