    Great how to video. I made my rudder from a old trolling motor bracket. And a some PVC no drilling into boat. Thanks for sharing your idea

    When you said, " where you would mount a small outboard ". I took an old trolling motor, kept the mount and shaft. Bought some plastic kayak paddles. Cut the paddles off with about 6" of the pipe still attached. Use 2 pvc T fittings and line up on the bottom of the trolling motor shaft. Drill and bolt them in line with each other. Should get the idea now. Works very well and if you have a old transom mount trolling motor. It's less than $20

    Digging the trailer. Have one ready to put together for my pond prowler. Think I’ll do like you did with the plywood/carpet floor.

      Kip Wright thanks for commenting. Yeah I had zero issues with the plywood and carpet. The boat slid on the trailer super easy from the water. Best of luck!

    Good job. Maybe cut in a threaded male and female adapter to allow you to turn it a few degrees either way in case you’re fighting wind or current. If you tighten it just over hand tight you should be able to swing it up and use the rudder itself as your mechanical advantage to swing it each way just a bit. I’m still in the research phase myself but I see them tied up outside of cabelas every time I go to my gym next door.

      Thanks. I’ve watched so many videos on them. It’ll be perfect for the tualatin river I think. Do they hand logs pretty good? Will I be able to hop out and pull it over a couple shallow spots? Like 6-10” deep. I have a 11’9” oldtown guide canoe, but with a bad back it’ll be nice to stand up in. I’m currently 400# but hopefully below 350 come spring. Is it steady enough for a mid day nap ?

    • @bassin9114
      @bassin9114  Před 4 lety

      Dane Stonebraker mine would float in 12” water but yes they only weigh about 110 pounds before adding batteries, trolling motor etc. You could easily do what you mentioned.

    I would have mounted the toilet flange on a piece of 3/4 ply .then clamped another piece of ply to the boat. installed hinges to connect the two pieces together . That way you could lift the rudder out of the water when needed

    • @jtee9548
      @jtee9548 Před 5 lety

      ABSOLUTELY!! I'd have made some type of base attached to a board. Clamp the board!! No holes in the transom, quick release too. And I'd make a SKEG, (fixed), not a rudder (moveable for steerage).

  • @anton00867
    @anton00867 Před 6 lety +1

    • @bassin9114
      @bassin9114  Před 6 lety +1

      TonyB, so the rudder worked SO GOOD. It actually kept the rear straighter than the front. Only change I’m gonna make is instead of allowing the 1 1/4 downpiece to swing upwards, I’m gonna make it more stationary. I can take it off with the pin if I need to while I’m out. All in all I think you’d be happy with a rudder on your bass raider as well!

      @anton00867 Před 6 lety

      That's awesome, definitely going to add it to my list. Took it out on the river last weekend and had a heck of a time keeping it straight.

    How is that boat? Do the seals leaking water into the pontoons? If so, how do you drain out the water? Thanks.

    • @bassin9114
      @bassin9114  Před 5 lety

      Joseph I appreciate the question. I had an issue once with water getting in. I had the boat covered with a tarp outside during a heavy rain before my shop was built. Water got through the tarp that I didn’t know about and it got into the pontoons. As far as the seals leaking you will probably have a little bit but shouldn’t be anything like I dealt with after that rain. As far as draining, there is a rubber plug on the front right pontoon. Just pull that rubber plug out and lift the back of the boat up and at an angle so the water will drain towards that drain. Just pop it back in once it drains. I actually sold the boat but I absolutely loved it. Thanks again✌🏼

      @jamescanady3442 Před 5 lety +1

      Really?! I'm glad that I saw this, because I'm going to pick a Troll King up actually, but does it really do away with the need for a rudder completely?

  • @jtee9548
    @jtee9548 Před 5 lety +1

    Brother, that's a skeg (fixed, to resist stern deflection) not a rudder, (adjustable left/right for steering). Skeg slows hull movement due to wind and in certain cases adds stability (like a Kayak)

      Rodger Kunkle thanks for the comment. Fortunately I haven’t had it hang a log but I have run into shallow mud getting a bait unhung. All I do is swing the rudder up till I’m out in deeper water and drop it back down.

It was a size they stocked and was about the size I wanted. Basically I didn’t want to cut it. I think it was somewhere around 18”x 20” or so? Good luck on yours!

    • @bassin9114
      @bassin9114  Před 5 lety +1

      Western Adventures thanks for the comment! I stand up all the time fishing so it would be hard to get a canopy over me but I could certainly see the use! If I were to sit and fish and add one I’d probably use a patio table umbrella and put the mount in the center of the floor. That way you could still turn and cast on either side where if you had a side mounted frame canopy the frame would restrict your casting. Great idea👍🏻
