  • Sticky aperture blades in RMC Tokina 35mm 1:2.8, but the aperture system was a little worn out because someone had try to do something. So I did the best I could, but it work's okay now.
Take care of the little steele ball for the aperture ring. There where some problems when putting back the blades and the rest of the aperture system, make a small mark before disassemble the aperture system, so you know where it sit's correct.
Not really the most happy lens to work on ;-)

Would never have fixed my Mitsuki MC 28 2.8 Nikon F-mount without this.

Ordered lens #2 so felt less apprehensive and pulled the front of my 28mm lens. Got to the blade mechanism and after the 3 screws were loose, the blades appeared. I gently wiped them a number of times with cotton buds wet with 99% ipa and opened and closed until they freed themselves of oil. Been working well for 24 hours, but I'm going to be more comfortable next time they stick. THANK YOU Mikeno62

This was great and worked for me with a m42 Hoya 28mm f2.8 which based on the aperture assembly, the double springs for the aperture return and the large brass c-clip holding the back part on, this Hoya is made by Tokina. Was also a little reassuring that my issues with getting the aperture back to being snappy was as fiddly on yours, but the video definitely helped getting it back straight. Not sure it's fully still working quite right due to removing an incorrect sprint setting screw, but this was a perfect video of the tedious process of getting those parts back together.

Amazing skill! I will keep my lens permanently open! I do not trust myself to do the clean, and I have a zoom that will give me smaller apertures. (Lens has just arrived in the post, I may reconsider later on though). My Thanks to you Mikeno62

THX for the video - I need to open up a 24mm F2.8 Tokina RMC to clean up the aperture blades and to regrease it (it´s always "fun" to find out how to open up the front part ^^).
Btw.: I personaly dont like to remove the whole aperture mechanism. It´s always quite "fiddly" to put it together again. I often only apply a (vanishing) cleaner directly and remove the oil residues with qtips as good as possible - Though: You need to do that multiple times (with some time inbetween) - So it´s a little bit more time consuming. But it´s still more "comfortable" to do it that way (and way less risk for a broken mechanism) ^^.

      Hi AustrianGeek
I can see your point with cleaning aperture blades the "easy" way, and I do it also sometimes. But if I clean for a friend I think it's better to disassemble it because it will last so much longer than doing the easy way.
BTW.: I have just cleaning the 24mm F2.8 Tokina RMC, it's made the same way so it should be easy for you (or others) to fix.
      Cheers
      Kenneth

Hmm. Yes. Sometimes you need to reclean it with the "easy way" (which is only no problem if you have the tools to open it up fast) - Complete disassembling is better in that aspect ^^. Yes.
Btw.: The Tokina 24mm is quite similar / 1:1 the same yes (but most vintage primes are build up quite similar). Also cleaned up / regreased a bunch of Yashica ML glass lately. Also quite similar (only the front unscrews completely - Not only the inner ring).

    Hello Kenneth,
thank you very much again for your excellent Tutorial!
I bought an old Contax RTS an became a Tokina 28mm f 2,8 with the Camera.
The Construction of the Tokina was the same, as at the 35mm and- i had the same Problem! 😂
It was a little bit tricky to work with that Lens, i had much fun with the Blades.
And the little steel Ball jumped for 2 times across the Room! 🙈 But i found it.
Now the aperture Blades do work very good again und the Lenses are a little bit cleaner.
    I´m very happy, thank´s again!
    By the way:
Do you know something about my Contax RTS?
The Shutter Curtain sounds a little bit (how should i explain it?) squeeky.
    Shutter times are ok.
    Many Greetings from Germany

That's great to hear, and yes, sometimes it can be a little tricky to work with the aperture blades and the tiny steel ball and the small spring too.
I have only very little experience with the Contax RTS, but it could be some of the gears that's get a bit dry and maybe need some cleaning and re-lube, just a guess.
      Greetings from Denmark

Hi. Great video. I just bought this lens used for macro work. The blades are stuck in the open position. The only problem is i can't seem to manage opening the front element. I was wondering about the tool you used to remove the front ring? What's it called and where can i get one?

And there is some literature on the construction and repair of lenses?
Or you he learned the basics of the profession?

Владимир Макеев Well, there are some book's made by Thomas Tomosy.

The repair technic I have learn myself during many years.
I have not had a factory trained collega to ask about, how to do so and so..., but I have spend a hell of a time to figure out on how to open lenses cameras and other equipment, just because it's a passion for me to disassemble, repair and assemble small things and get it to work again :-)
The films I have made on my youtube cannel is just a very small collection of what I have repaired, but on the other hand, it's the more special equipment where the challenge is.., just like a good complicatet puzzle...
But also because there is very little or NO info about the very special or really expensive equipment.
All my skills I have learned by try and error's, again and again..., just to be better. My tool's I use is most of the time homemade, I have never seen those very special tool's made for repair, f.eks. Leica, hasselblad, Voigtländer, Nikon, Canon, etc. etc. etc. Is' the same with tool's for the lenses.
      Cheers

Many thanks for such a detailed answer.
It looks and abroad talents are born in a garage, not only in Russia.
And I thought, you complete literature on repair just about anything.
Today repaired daughter lens Canon EF 35 mm 1: 2.0, which jammed after the fall, and also have to look all the crumbs.
Like everything intact, and the focus motor for disjoining in one place (gear stepper motor).
More need to seek his otyustirovat.Perhaps on your sites have some information about this lens?
PS Printed in the Russian and then translate the Google translator, so if you do not smoothly - do not blame me.

Thank's, well, at the moment I have't come accross a Canon 35mm 1:2.0 but when it happen i will surely open it and see what's happen inside this lens... And i will of course not blame you, if there are any pictures I can hopefully use Google tranlate.

      Hi Adrian
I have repaired small things during many years, so I have many tool's and some of them I have made myself so it will fit the task, Some tools I find on a fleemarket or buy good quality tool's in a good hardware store.
Sometimes i go to my dentist and buy some tool's there (good quality...)
I'm self tranined in repaire cameras and lenses and other technical stuff, it's a kind of spirit to get things to work when they not working proper.
      Cheers
