  • WandaVision is the first TV show to star Avengers. So it’s appropriate that this television event isn’t just full of MCU easter eggs; it’s also packed with homages to TV history, specifically family sitcoms, from the 1950s all the way up to present day. Besides offering a fun game of spot-the-reference for TV fans, these allusions inform the story of Wanda coming to terms with her grief. We’re going through episode by episode to show you all the sitcom easter eggs you might have missed and what they mean for the bigger picture of what’s been going on inside Westview -- and Wanda Maximoff’s head. Be ready for spoilers!

      It helps that Jac Schaeffer's Marvel Cinematic Crewniverse had Dick Van Dyke as a consultant to help them remake old situation comedies. We got The Dick Van Dyke Show in 1961, but that dude has been around in the acting business since the late 1950s and he is STILL alive at 95! That is how long Stan Lee has lived. Dick Van Dyke was 94 when WandaVision was being filmed, and I am happy he lived to see it all. March 14, 2021, 4:19am

    I love how well Wandavision encapsulates the 5 stages of grief: denial (1 and 2) anger (3 and 4) bargaining (5 and 6) depression (7 and 8) and finally acceptance (9)
    And as everyone has pointed out already, Vision’s line “what is grief if not love persevering” is so beautiful and really fits the show so well

      @Nessainthebuilding Před 3 lety +10

      As someone who's been through grief and grief counselling the problem with the stages of grief is that they don't go in a neat order. It's more of a jumbled mess of all of those feelings and you can go through all of them in one day

      @@Nessainthebuilding Very true. And I loved how Wanda described the grief waves, because that's exactly what it's like. Ever-changing waves that come again and again, with time varying in between. But when it first happens, they come so frequently you think you're going to drown.

    I loved this show so much. Never had seen anything like this before, they delivered a truly unique story for dealing with grief. In the words of Monica Rambeau, "If I had your power, I'd bring my mother back"... We all sympathize with Wanda because if we had the ability to escape loss/grief we would do it - but this is a cautionary tale about how ignoring your grief isolates you from reality, and the only way through is to grieve, then accept and move forward. 😭❤

    I cried like a baby while watching the eighth episode. She felt so alone ever since all her loved ones were deceased and due to that, she felt a bottomless pit of grief. I couldn't help but feel sorry for her. Her hex, even if it was unethical, was in response to her immense grief. I saw a video from one of those "ranting video essay" channels (where things are only good or bad, no in-between) that argued WandaVision was bad because she ruined people's lives and didn't care. It was such a dense take that exposed those channels for what they are--reactionary, grifting drivel.
      Even though I have my problems with Disney as a corporation, they knocked it out of the park with WandaVision--ESPECIALLY bc of how they explore how a super-powerful being like Wanda can still be very HUMAN. They can lose themselves in grief, and get lost in their power. She was not doing it out of malice, it's just that she became so lost in her grief that others became caught up in it. That's not to say she did no wrong, but the show gives so many dimensions to her character.

    I liked the show overall, but Monica really got the short end of the stick. She’s set up as this amazing foil to Wanda - a woman who’s lost the person she loves most and is trying to re-adjust to the world after 5 missing years. She doesn’t have superpowers, but she has her brains and her compassion, reaching out to the grieving Avenger and trying to help her move towards a better, truer future. Then she gets her powers, tells a dick joke, and all that interesting stuff is dropped. All we get is a quick “she’ll be important in Captain Marvel 2” stinger. I get that this show is about Wanda and Vision first, but they had such a great character here and I wish they’d done more with her.

      According to a showrunner, the final episode went through quite a bit of mess due to Covid. A lot of storylines were cut short. Still, I think Monica always served as a way to offer an outside perspective and insight on Wanda's psyche. She didn't have a major arc or whatever and I don't think theres much wrong with it. She had a strong debut and made me excited for her future appearances, so they did their job well I guess.

    • @ShellsGhost1

      Ultimately it's probably better that they simply established her as such a strong character and then left her to be given more focus in her own movie/tv show in the future. Especially since it seems most of her hang ups that are left are specifically with Carol Danvers. And the dick joke was another reference to a character in Growing Pains which was a show from the 80's the director was also in as a child.

      I feel like people keep glossing over the fact she didn’t even mean to do what she did..in the _first_ place. She didn’t know she was capable of it, she just got hit a little hard mentally then things went out of control. She wasn’t even fully aware what was happening until a certain either.
      If she had a choice to do it all over again consciously she would’ve never involved anyone to begin with. There’s not much she can do to repay them back anyhow...a simple apology isn’t going to work which is why she didn’t say it(though I think her walk of shame through the town in broad day light says something). She keeps growing strength wise and therefore chooses to isolate herself to figure to what extent her power lies.

      I kinda got the feeling, seeing her get up from kneeling at the empty lot and drive away, that maybe she could pull an "it's all a dream" for the residents of the town? Make them forget it happened? However, one good thing about the MCU right now is their focus on fallout continuity and consequences/ripple effects. So they'll probably use this ripple to further future large scale character stories.

    It's a shame that Wandavision came out during the pandemic because it is 💯 a water cooler show. Everyone was kept guessing and theorising. Shows like that are also becoming less prevalent with the rise of streaking and series being released in one go. Whilst the series itself is more fun if binge-watched, I really loved talking with my friends about it every weekend.

    • @richardbourton4523
      @richardbourton4523 Před 3 lety +3

      You’re so right. I think disney is right on the money to stick to releasing one episode a week. It’s not sustainable to spend millions on a high quality show only for it to be watched in a few hours and then get internet buzz only immediately on release. There’s no word of mouth buzz beyond ‘oh you haven’t seen it yet? It’s good you should!’ ‘Okay I’ll check it out when I have time’, which doesn’t translate to the same media hype as theorising with friends week to week, dissecting your favourite moments, discussing each twist and character beat and making gifs of the best moments and so on that comes from releasing a show one episode at a time. It’s frustrating in the moment to have to wait, but I doubly looked forward to every Friday evening over the last few weeks because I was excited for the new episode and you just do not get that same experience when I can watch all of the Witcher in a day if I want to.

    • @alexanders7569
      @alexanders7569 Před 3 lety +2

      @@richardbourton4523 totally agree. The only downside was that they didn't nail the pacing, which is a lot easier to do with a Netflix style show because it's essentially one long movie. I felt that many of the episodes could have done with an extra five minutes to compensate for that. At the beginning it worked because it made it feel stunted, which was creepy, but the last few episodes needed a little more breathing space.
      All in all though it was excellent, and very much felt like a comic book limited series. It gives me high hopes for Secret Invasion!

    I've seen a lot of analysis videos that heavily rely on the comics, so I appreciate you guys talk more about the other media that went into making this. It's refreshing in a way talk about what happens in the show just for what it is, instead of for what it means to the greater MCU. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy theory oriented videos, but sometimes they can get pretty repetitive. Your orientation towards the TV references and their correlation to the themes and emotional states of the characters feels very fresh, and is definitely appreciated.

    Wanda was shown to be completely aware and in control of what she was doing to the town very early in the show. So actually she is someone who could terrorize an entire town so that she can be happy. Just because she gave it up when she was ready to move on doesn't mean that the harm she did was all undone.

    • @richardbourton4523
      @richardbourton4523 Před 21 dnem

      Having rewatched the first few episodes, I feel like it definitely implies that she doesn’t initially have a great grasp on how much she is in control. She’s so grief stricken that she releases all this power and sort of goes with it and only slowly starts to understand the extent of what she is doing. She realises she can control the events as she wishes over time, but then doesn’t examine what she is doing because that intrudes on her wish fulfilment and she doesn’t realise it’s hurting the other people. Later on, she then does seem genuinely horrified when the people tell her how much they are all suffering and though she doesn’t want to believe it, she can’t hide from that and ultimately makes the right choice.
