- Replacing HVAC Stepper Motor on a Mercedes-Benz 2001 to 2007 C240 (W203)
Knocking sound coming from under the dashboard when start up the car. One of the 10 stepper motors could be the culprit. The knocking sound usually goes away after 15-30 seconds. This video shows you how to replace one of the motors. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Your conclusion is absolutely correct.
Often times it is actually a crack at the hex key of the control arm that causes the motor to slip/skip , and not the stepper motor itself.
Thats the reason why mercedes reworked the design of the control arm two times, each time adding more material around the hex key to keep it from cracking/flexing.
Excellent instructions. Good on you mate. Pleasure to watch and listen.
Thank you very much for the video. A lot of respect for your patience and professionalism
Thank you, sir
so nice of you to show step by step.
thanks!!!
Thank you for taking the time to post this video. Very helpful. A common problem I think.
This definitely goes to my Car playlist. Altho mine is C 270 facelift (2004) I guess it won't be much different. It made me realize this need to be done in summer (more light and warmth). Thanks for the great video.
Thank you for watching and good luck.
Thank you man, you took too much in your time for this tuto.
Thank you
Excellent video mate, thanks a lot. I've already done this about 2 years ago, but forgot how to do it, & it's gone again! Good info about the oem part too. Cheers 👍
A fantastic video! Your notes are excellent. A true professional. Cheers
Thank you. I appreciated the comment.
Thanks, I just got replaced 2 motors last week. It is a lot of work to get this done. But worth it
Thanks so much for this video. I replaced the arm that moves the flap to direct air to the windscreen, when the defrost button is selected. The arm was cracked where it fits to the stepper motor. Fortunately, the replacement was a tight fit on the stepper motor cog. It fixed the issue immediately and the annoying 'eight clicks' from the dash each time I started the car, has gone. For anyone completing this job, when reinstalling the centre console, make sure all wiring plugs have sufficient length and will reach where they need to plug in. Otherwise you will be repeatedly installing and uninstalling the console til you get the wiring all hooked up.
I had this same problem like it is on video. I changed stepper motor and it was ok. The thing is that I can hear now sound of tightening each time when I press to direct air toward windscreen. I heard this also before, before my old stepper motor went bad. I removed again everything to check what is happening, stepper motor is working fine, arm is ok, but little part which arm pushs toward up when air is directing toward windscreen is moving really hard and slow...This is reason why my stepper motor went bed in the first, all parts inside of it are plastic and it could not endure so much effort.. Do you maybe know what I should do to fix this? I wa thinking maybe its just some dust collected and that thing which is oppening air toward windscreen (some kind of doors or whatever) needs cleaning, but how to reach that part..I was searching online but couldnt find anyone cleaning that or removing parts toward it..
Gracias amigo por tan buena asesoría y paciencia, para explicar cómo se debe de hacer. Exelente trabajo

Good video, clear instructions 👍👍👍
I appreciate you showing this video. You should put up a donations link or something. Thank you very much.
Awesome work, that's a lot of effort to do the job, well done 👍
LOL, someone needs to parody this, like at the end the guy just sits on a pile of scrap metal and calmly says "well now you know what to do, just reverse everything you did to put it together" :D
This is a big job! Thanks for sharing 🤓
man you are a warrior, I love your endurance, got to be the best feeling ever when it finally works. About to sell my C240wagon as I bought a E350wagon. Was gearing up to do this n the 240 but I'll drop the price 500 and let the new owner have the fun!!!
Thanks so much for sharing. So helpfully. Greetings from Argentina.
Great job mate! Good informative video. Thx for sharing it with us!
Thank you for watching
Great work sir 👍
So the car salesman told me, "It's only a $20 part," unfortunately, he didn't mention the complexities in changing it out. Great video, I don't know if I have that much patience. Guess we'll find out.
Very helpful! Many thanks for this!

U did a good job bud. That is also a problem with my c230
patience paying off, at it's finest!
LOL. Thanks
Thank you so much for this video. I helped me a lot to realize that it had to be done by a mechanic.
Does any one know a good mechanic in Dublin
to replace my stepper motor on my C180 mercedes 2003.
How much did they charge you?
Man you're a hero
Thank you so much for this. I have a right hand drive, so could be a bit different. But it's a great help. Much appreciated.
Hi Chris. have you tackled this job yet? :O
Hi Graham, No not yet because I found out that the main problem wasn't only the stepper motor but the middle vent was stuck open so all the air was escaping upwards. I managed to source a second hand one from Latvia at a great price and at least now the center aircon vents are working. Also it's winter here in Perth so I'm not in such a rush. Also a few other plastic fittings are broken due to UV deterioration (eg door grab handles) and some other dashboard stuff, so I'm getting as much of that done before tackling the job. I also have the common leak under the oil filter which I need to do. I hate it leaking oil on my garage floor.
Thanks anyway.
Cheers
Chris
@@SaabCarlsson Thanks for the reply! My HVAC fan is chirping every now and then so I might replace that when doing this job (mine is clicking behind the dash as well). I have the same oil leak but I'll be doing that with the valve cover gaskets. Best of luck from South Africa!
I have the C320 2002 sportwagon. Pretty close to the same, don't need to pop off the shifter but pulling back the center console is a must do item.
Thank you video is very helpful. God bless you.
syed pervez You’re welcome.
Also, the notes are very useful. THX!
Thank you. I'm glad to hear that.
Good video. Thanks
Amazing ! Thank you so much!

Awesome job 👍
Thank you so much good man!
What a bastard of a job for what’s actually a small problem to fix. Getting to it is a whole different matter 🤔👍
Nice sharing my friend

That job would cost an arm and a leg at a dealership, well done friend!! 👍🏽

Elmedin Corbo Thank you for watching and good luck with the repair.

Thanks so much for this video. Would’ve added a lot of time to an already long and annoying job. Appreciated!!
One more like form me
This information is really good thanks
Thank you, sir.
great video!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice vid my man, thank you. How many hrs you estimate this job took you?
Great job Thank you so much
Thanks for watching
thanks for your effort on the video and i got a question is this the motor responsible for the air going down the foot area ?
Great video! I have an 02 C240 too. Wonder if you ever experience heat in footwell seeping in through central console driver’s side when driving?
Thanks. Didn't forgot!!
Thank you!
Amazingly helpful, thank you! I'm quoted about $1k for repairing this - yikes, but you show clearly nothing is extremely simple to do so :-)
to get defroster motor is a pain in the ass... i give up today
Well done! Mine needs doing but I know from experince that this job WILL result in a piece of trim or clips breaking, so I will probably just leave it
Can you please explain what is the function of this stepper motor and control arm. does it control flow of air to different ports or it controls temperature???? Mine C200 does not blow cold air while compressor is working absolutely fine, gas is fully charged. My HVAC system keeps on circulating with cold and hot air. I am unable to figure out the issue.
So I'm coming to the party a few years after you posted your vid on this much maligned issue with Mercedes and the infamous stepper motors. There's one other guy I've watched in Austria who did this process - it took him 6.5 hours in a day. I'd like to ask you how much time I ought to put aside for doing the same task but on a R-H drive car as I'm in the UK. BTW, learnt a lot from your insights... plus I don't speak German. Thanks for the post
Thank you so much👍👍
i also did this in october. such a pain in the ass of a job. i missed putting back a few screws haha
samus aran LOL
Damn, I have the same issue. I knew it would be a pain in the ass but this takes
It to another level of frustration
Thank you very much for your help thank you very much
Jesus! That was too much for that stupid part!! Thanks dude!
Best video
I have one and it works, not clicking but the motor kind of makes a grinding noise when you turn the key on .Question: If you never turn the air switch and just leave it in all ,will it stay there even after the stepper motor goes out ? Because I'm not touching it anymore and if it goes out I can live with the air being on all vents permanently rather than having to tear the dash apart to get to it and replace it
If I understand correctly, you ended up using the original OEM Behr stepper motor and the original stepper arm? Or did you replace the white OEM arm with a fresh/new one?
Cheers mate, have same problem with my clk .
this info is for someone who is watching this video and is going to attempt to do this. The arm that comes off of this actuator is like timing on a car it must be put on exactly how it was taken off and if you turn the key and put power to it while the arm was off you just threw it off timing. So if you get clicking that's probably why. Does anyone know what vent this actuator opens and closes?
Thx man
Anyone that gets ticked off (pun intended) by the stepper motor ticking for 15 seconds, needs to watch this to realize that there are far worse things in life to concern yourself with. I reckon that by the time I got half way, the floor would be littered with the ends of broken clips, that were mounting with each new task that I came across. Talking about going down a rabbit hole.
Will this fix my defrost vents facing the windshield? I’m not getting any air out of the vents facing the windshield. My windshield is fogging up during a hard rain.
nice very nice I hope i will fix it
Tank you
Do you need the radio code when you put it back in?
What would happen if you just unplug the stepper with the issue?
Thank you !
Should I change the motors as well, the lever was the only thing broken but the clicking noise is still there??
Hi, need some help here... i have trouble with Mercedes W203 C320.. When AC turn on, Blower off and Compressor On. a few minute later, Blower on and compressor on. After a few minute again, then compresor off and blower still on. Blower have 4 Pin, i measure and its good (1 Pin to Ground, 1 Pin to Interior Fuse, 2 Pin to Module). I measure compressor and its good too. Then i scan it, i get :
1. B1548 Component M2/15 (Left and right footwell flaps actuator) is stiff or blocked
2. B1205 Refrigent pressure too low
3. B1000 the control unit faulty
can help me what i must check next ?
I have a 2004 c200 that’s doing the same thing. My car is right hand drive . Do think I’ll be able to get to it by just removing the glove box ?
