- In today's video, I've gathered together some brilliant books to read in the winter. These are books I've enjoyed curling up with on cold evenings by the fire, and I've also shared a few on my TBR pile. Do you have any wintry reads to recommend?

ABOUT ME: I'm Miranda Mills, a freelance writer and photographer living in Yorkshire. - Zábava
Dear Miranda. You have introduced a world of authors unknown to me. I ordered and have begun Sugared Oranges . My father was Polish and of the same generation as the authors grandmother and from what I can make out , from the same part of Poland she was born in before the family had to move . I am being transported into a wonderful world that I would never have discovered without your recommendation. Thank you so much.
Oh, I'm so happy to hear that - thank you! So glad Sugared Oranges holds such meaning for you. I think it's a beautiful book! I'd love to visit Poland sometime xxx
Hi Miranda, I just recently discovered your channel. I just love all your book recommendations. I am from Southern California and so excited to watch your lovely vlogs. I really enjoy your walks, trips to town, your book reviews and tea with your mum. I love your taste in books so much. Thank you for widening my horizons. I am so happy I found your channel.
Thank you so much for your lovely comment! I’m so glad you’re enjoying my videos 😊❤️📚🫖
Hello Miranda! Thank you for reminding me of Jamaica Inn. I read it many many years ago and I still remember the description of Mary's journey to the Inn in the beginning of the book. So vivid! I'm going to reread it :) Have a nice day! 📚😘😘
I love the channel, I think I’ll pay The Stripey Badger bookshop a visit soon.
Just love your channel Miranda, especially the ones with your mum, where you two laugh so much--I feel like I could just sit down with the two of you have a cup of tea and a chat. Thanks for these winter recommendations--have wishlisted The Glovemaker and A Winter Away.
Thank you so much!
Winter Solstice is my favorite winter read.
So glad I watched this video Miranda as we're almost into winter here in Australia so my TBR just trippled !📚❣
Hello Miranda. Thank you so much for the winter reading recommendations. All of the books are very intriguing to me. You have an amazing collection of books. I hope you and your mom are staying cozy by the fire and enjoying all of your wonderful books, cups of hot tea, and hopefully some delicious treats you have baked. Take care....... Crystal.
So glad you enjoyed my recommendations, Crystal! I hope you're having a good week and staying cosy too xxx
A new list of books to find. I absolutely love that. I just arranged one of my book shelves with the books I've gotten from your recommendations. Can't wait to dive in. 👍❤️❤️
Oh that’s wonderful! Happy reading 📚❤️
Miranda, I love the books you read and will be ordering more from your recs. I really enjoy looking at your blog too and I have to say the picture of the blueish door in the snow in your photos reminds me of The Secret Garden. I can totally imagine the characters in that book pushing it open to see the wonders, lol. Thank you for also getting me back into baking and enjoying a whole new range of books to offer. Love your mum too! She is the sweeest! I couldn't bear it if you ever stopped posting videos, lol. I feel a new excitement over myself because of you. Thanks yet again, lovely lady xxx
My TBR list just keeps growing and growing, from every vlog/podcast I'm watching/listening to ! I think a vlog is much better than a podcast (if you're not camera shy!), it's more engaging for this audience member, being able to see the beautiful books, bookshops, garden, food etc. I really want to read Wintering (rather annoyingly my library in Lincolnshire *waving from the other side of The Humber!*, doesn't have it yet, nor the lovely poetry books you've mentioned in other vlogs). I did manage to get the Glovemaker, Grey Mask, The Betrayals, Miss Austen and I managed to get The Other Bennett Sister and The Hunting Party inexpensively on Kindle. I'm not a fast reader so it may take me a while to get to them all, meanwhile many more being added to my TBR pile on a near daily basis, including the new Laura Purcell! T'was ever thus! Thanks so much for your vlogs Miranda, you are now my daily viewing highlight!👍😁❤
Thank you so much! I definitely prefer making videos to podcasts, and there is more more scope for vlogging 😊 So glad you were able to track down several books. I hope you enjoy making your way through them. Happy reading! ❤️📚
Ohh, a new Agatha Christie for me to look for! I love her books and thought over the years I had read them all but I’ve never heard of this one. I do want to read Jamaica Inn as I love Daphne DuMaurier. And several years ago I read Falling Angels and loved it. I was also drawn to the cover of it. Thank you, Miranda for all the wonderful suggestions.
Oh if you haven’t read the Sittaford mystery then I think you’re in for a treat! It’s definitely a favourite of mine. I’m looking forward to reading Falling Angels 😊 xxx
Thanks for some great recommendations. I’m listening to The Sittaford Mystery on Audible at the moment ! I’ve also just started Wintering which I’m really enjoying.
That’s such a good listen! Hope you enjoy Wintering too 😊📚❄️
Hey Miranda 😊, I love all these recommendations but “THE GLOVEMAKER” sounds AMAZING 🥰...it reminds me a little of Philippa Gregory’s book “Tidelands” how Alinor helped “Father James” whilst anticipating her Husband return and helping him at a Big risk...I’m absolutely in love with my books from your recommendations.., I ask my daughter “do I I have lots of books like Miranda?”..she said let me see Miranda’s books..so I found an older video of you giving a tour of your bookshelves before you got out the word “requested” she gave me an Emphatic “No” 🤦🏾♀️😂😂😂 we both knew the answers but I really wanted her to see your books 📚🥰
Your daughter sounds so sweet, Kiki 😂 I so enjoyed The Glovemaker - a really gripping read! Xxx
Hi Miranda!!! Once more, thank you so much for your lovely vídeo!!!! I 'm planning to read A winter away and Falling Angels which all sound great!!! Fantastic recommendations!!!
Oh wonderful- I hope you enjoy them 😊 Thank you! 📚❄️
Thank you so much for the recommendations Miranda, I love snow and I just love books set in winter. Love your vlogs , it’s so cozy and lovely.
Brilliant! Loved it when you restacked the books! We always want more :-)
Great video with lots of good recommendations. I'm going to order a copy of The Ship from Simnel Street. Speaking of books with a bakery setting, have you read Jane Lends a Hand, by Sally Watkins? I love it, and also adore Georgina Finds Herself, by the same author. Both are published in the 1920s.
I have only recently discovered your channel too. I absolutely love it and look forward to your videos. Love the idea of reading seasonally. Also I am bringing back a teatime once a week with my daughter, thanks to your inspiration. Really enjoying your recommendations. Thanks you so much for what you do. Xxx
I have given in to temptation and ordered The Glovemaker, it looks so good! Very much tempted by Sugared Oranges but trying to resist ....! Thank you for the wintery recommendations x
You’re so welcome! I really enjoyed The Glovemaker & hope you do too! Xxx
I love your videos and recs. Looking forward to more. Thanks for sharing!😘
Thanks so much! I’m very glad you enjoy them xxx
I’m just reading Winter Solstice on your recommendation and I’m loving it, when I’ve read it I’m going to pop over to your book club video on it. I quite fancy reading, Paris In Winter. Thank you Miranda 😀
So glad you’re enjoying it 😊📚❤️
I am also reading 📚 Winter Solstice! It is wonderful! Great recommendation by Miranda!
Oh super!
I finished Winter Solstice for the 12/20 book club. What a heart warming and gratifying read. It was the icing on the cake of my holiday season.
Thank you for such wonderful suggestions! They all sound so lovely! My Amazon wish list is overflowing with winter reads now!❤️
So glad you enjoyed my suggestions! 📚❄️
Thank you so much for introducing me to Elizabeth Fair! I am really enjoying A Winter Away. I love her humour and charm and cannot wait to read her other books. The perfect cheer-me-up read for January x
Oh wonderful! I'm so glad you enjoyed it xxx
I'm going to start this one this afternoon
Thank you for your beautiful suggestions 💝 Time to curl up and read ...
You’re very welcome 😊❤️📚
A great list of recommendations, you mentioned a few authors I’ve not come across before which is always exciting 🤣
Oh super! Glad you enjoyed them - thank you 😊 📚❤️
Just watching and enjoying this episode of your Book Tube. Wondered if you'd noticed the authors name of "Diabolical Bones", is a play on Ellis Bell, Emily Bronte's pseudonym? 😃
Yes, I had! I thought it was clever of her (can’t remember the author’s real name, which she also writes under) 💫
Hi, I've just read Christmas Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella not my usual thing but fancied something light and seasonal.
Sounds fun!
Wonderful recommendations as always, Miranda! If you enjoy Paver's Thin Air and crave more, I really urge you to read her novel Dark Matter which describes an Arctic expedition in the 1930s. It is terrifying and very, very atmospheric!
That does sound good! Thank you for the recommendation, Georgia!
Thank you for the great suggestions! I've just ordered A Winter Away but waiting to finish watching your vlog before ordering more :))
Oh wonderful! I so enjoyed that one. Hope you like my other suggestions too ❤️📚
Hi Miranda, I am definitely going to add some of your recommendations to my library for winter reading - the Tracy Chevalier sounds very interesting. The Wolves of Willoughby Chase is a very scary read even as an adult and there is a wonderful dramatisation on BBC Radio Four on Sounds with Jane Lapotaire as Miss Slighcarp which you might catch before it becomes unavailable in 7 days time. Another lovely video, thank you and happy reading, Teresa ❤️📚❤️
Oh I’ll look at that dramatisation, Teresa - thank you! Xxx
I loved Thin air and I can also recommend Dark matter by her (also a ghost story). So many wonderful recommendations Miranda, thank you! :)
So glad you enjoyed them! Dark Matter sounds good too!
I just so love your videos and look forward to each one
Just downloaded "Wintering" to my ereader. I had wishlisted it on audible but when I saw that it mentioned illness and suffering i decided against it but... you have convinced me! The winter lover in me is ready for it nonetheless (especially as this week here we'll have around 35°C every day)
I think it’s a very comforting & hopeful read, so I hope you enjoy it too 📚❤️
What a lovely video ! ❄️I've just recently discovered your channel and I love the esthetic of your videos (and your house ! 😍)
Thank you so much 😊📚❤️
Hi Miranda, I loved this video. I just started watching your video on Winter Solstice, which I read a couple of years ago. Do you have a monthly book club with a list of books for 2021 or the first few months?
Lovely video. Thanks for the recommendations. I love how you do often emphasise the illustrators of the books and covers. It has made me pay much more attention to who has illustrated the covers of the books I’m reading x
Oh I’m glad to hear that! Illustrations often add so much to my pleasure in a book 📚 💕
I'm going to go broke buying up all the wonderful books you share!
Sugared Oranges is so tempting - getting Rose Petal Jam first and then this one next!
I love Rose Petal Jam too!!
@@MirandaMills I couldn't resist - ordered Sugared Oranges too!
They’re both gorgeous! Hope you love them as much as I do ❤️📚
Dear Miranda, might I ask you what the beautiful cardboard display on the bookcase is? These white bunnies look adorable! They don't exactly look like something by Angela Harding, so I'm intrigued...! I did some research but it led nowhere. Hope you and your mum have a lovely week. 💖
It's a Mark Hearld pop-out card, Jane.
Wonderful list! Does anyone know if The Ship from Simnel Street is published in a collection or can be found in another way? I see it’s out of print, but usually I’m able to see used copies for sale online and I can’t find it listed in the 4 places I checked.
Interestingly, I happen to have read Lorna Doon at the age of 10. I must re read it one day (40 years later!)
Oh yes, I read The Glovemaker in warmer weather but it is a wintery read.
Hello Miranda, For a children's book - I love The Winter Story from The Four Seasons of Brambly Hedge by Jill Barklem - so enchanting. I found a vintage copy of Lorna Doone on my bookshelves and decided to read Chapter 42, The Great Winter, to see if I want to read the whole book. I also found a Fontana paperback copy of The Sittaford Mystery - so I am set thanks to you!! I've ordered The Snowstorm and I really want The Ship from Simnel Street, but I have to control myself - for now.
Brambly hedge is just wonderful. The secret staircase is my favourite
Loved your choices. I read “The Wolves of Willoughby Chase” at school, have you read the sequel “Black Hearts in Battersea”. Thank you
I have, but a long time ago! I’m looking forward to a reread 🐺
Hello Amanda, just wondering how you find all these stories and books were even published,I never knew the author or books were around
Paris in Winter, Sugared Oranges or The Ship from Simnel Street? Where do I head first? I bought Lorna Doone years ago when on holiday on Exmoor and just couldn’t get into it. I wish you luck and thank you as always for the inspiration. Stay warm and take care. X
Thanks Joanna! It’s very hard to choose between those! I’m hoping I love Lorna Doone reading it again xxx
Hi Miranda thank you for the book recommendations especially sugared orange winter in Poland, just over 4 years ago my son married his beautiful fiancé Agnieszka who is Polish after marrying here and having a traditional English afternoon tea for the reception the next day we all flew to Warsaw the polish capital so that we could have a second reception for both the British and Polish families with traditional polish food. We spent 5 days in Warsaw and then travelled south to Zakopane in the mountains it was absolutely wonderful the people the food the scenery I cannot recommend Poland enough for a visit. Stay warm Janet xxx
So glad you enjoyed them, Janet! That sounds like a wonderful wedding, and I would definitely love to visit Poland sometime 😊💕
I have never been here so early. What a coincidence, I have just been searching for some wintry reads! The only books I actually know that you've mentioned are 'Jamaica Inn', 'Wintering' and 'Little Women' . The rest is all Greek to me. Thanks for your suggestions and best wishes! (Also, I love your pendant necklace.)
I hope you enjoy watching! ❄️📚
All the best from POLAND :) Pozdrawiam z Polski :)
What do you do except for reading? 😁😁😁
