  • After 23 years in frontline security I had a few run ins with travellers. I also met plenty that were just fine. But I talk about the most interesting events of course! When a large group of travellers ran rampant trashing venues to a small village pub being terrorized on a weekly basis..

Typical from the Police. Certain groups just get a free rein to commit crime. Travellers being one of the more obvious ones. It's pathetic but predictable.

Thank you for another fun-filled episode 😀.
When I came to England in 2010 with £60 in my pocket and a promise from a friend to get a job, things did not work out as planned. I spent £63 for the train ticket from Stansted to Bristol (£3 was given by Lithuanian lorry driver at the airport), meaning that i came to Bristol broke. Had to make my way to Weston-Super-Mare on the same day, so that was another adventure. So I end up in WSM, with no money, no promised job etc. It was bad. But I met some travellers a couple of days later, had a chat in broken English and they offered me a job, to help them out in the caravan park, basically just to look after it. They clearly did not need anyone there and the job was given to me because they felt sorry for me and wanted to help me to get on my feet here. They paid me every day, bought me food, cigarettes etc, they were also teaching me English. It was great. I am super grateful to these guys. This is my experience with travellers :)

I was often told (back in the day) to treat people as individuals and not to lump people together. To a point I think that's a fair way of going through life. But let's be honest, stereotypes exist for a reason. I'm sure some travellers are nice enough but the majority I've come across ooze a willingness to fight for basically no reason. Maybe it's a cultural thing, maybe it's due to centuries of discrimination. Frankly I don't care. If I'm in an area with a large group of them, and especially if alcohol is being consumed, I'm getting out of there!

@@paulgibbons2320 not really. it's exactly the tribal people who make life horrible. like these "travellers" are tribal people, they can't join human society, they live in their own ghetto that they bring with them.
Everything is a cultural thing, and their culture should be simply ended. Simple as.
I've seen black and white and everything in between work perfectly fine together, because they all operate on honest, honourable, compassionate framework. There's no future for conflictive cultures, cooperation is the future absolute of the human race, and there's nothing to be done about it. Cultures that can't integrate and cooperate will be wiped out.
      And that's a good thing.

I'm not surprised the police did nothing. I learned that 40 years ago when my neighbour's corner shop window was smashed in by drunken thugs in the middle of the night. I quickly put my jeans on, grabbed a persuader out of the kitchen drawer and ran out to help. These animals were jeering at him from the other side of the road. The most disgusting thing was I saw a shadowy figure lurking in a shop doorway. It was (still a thing in the 80s) a beat copper hiding waiting for backup.

Biggest problem is that the police will often not intervene when travellers are involved. Not only that, but the police are terrified of being accused of being racist and the travellers exploit that to the greatest extent possible. End result is two tier policing: one rule for travellers, another rule for the rest.

Another great video. An issue that is often quite diffcult to address because perceived disapproval of the travelling community is often seen as adjacent to racism. I think you did a great job as usual.
I've worked in construction type industries before and when we were hiring different guys for different jobs we'd often talk about run ins with travellers on the tea breaks.
Everyone had a story. Whether it was having your tools stolen and then sold back to you, catching someone in the act, being threatened or finessed in some kind of way, every guy in construction had had some kind of negative interaction.
As a community, I think they are quite hard for the average person (or Gorgey)to understand as they are clearly quite insular and have no desire to fit in to mainstream society.
African american economist Thomas Sowell talks about a certain kind of redneck culture as having a big influence on African Slaves in the 1800s. Lack of discipline with regards to focused, long term work, honour culture that demands violent responses to even the smallest perceived slight, gambling, drinking, illegitimate children and basically living off your wits and engaging in low level exploitative behaviour in order to survive.
I think the traveller culture is another example of this.
My home town has had various issues with them and when i was a touring musician and had to play weddings and birthdays for travellers and circus folk there woukd always be a fight and you had to watch your wallets.
It's hard to say whether that makes them bad people or whether they just exist within a completely different paradigm to the rest of English society. I'd probably lean more towards the latter and that all cultures have learned different ways of surviving that aren't always compatible and that is the root of a lot of judgement between people.
Great discussion, very honest and thought provoking. Honesty and clear headedness are always best.

When I was still living at home with my parents we got burgled by travellers. This was in early 1996. I was a very naive 18 year old at the time and I got talking to one after replacing the tax disc on my car in front of the family house. I didn't know anything about the nature of gypsies at the time and I was trusting of anyone at that time. A people pleaser. During the conversation I inferred that I would be leaving the house later on and he worked out that no one was at home.
I left the house to go to sixth form for a lesson that afternoon. My mum came home from work later that afternoon to find the house had been burgled by jemmying the patio door off the rails. Police attended and did the investigations. They had an inkling that it was the guy who lived in a council flat around the corner and arrested him. My God, I felt bloody stupid after that encounter . Scumbag got sent down for it ( and possibly a few other burglaries). His attempt to smuggle drugs into prison in his rectum was not successful ( not sure how my mum found out about that).

What I understood is that they consider themselves as others outside regular society so they don't feel guilty.

But they do a lot of times. I started working when I was around 12 years old. Doing dishes every other Saturday in a coffeeshop/diner reserved for bus drivers, in Oslo. One of the bus drivers was this big black American guy. He used to be a professional boxer in Chicago, but ran off to avoid the Vietnam draft.
He was a very friendly guy with great sense of humour. I was about 14-15 at the time. A bit reserved and quite chubby weighing around 100kg.
I don't remember how it came to be, but I remember him holding me upside down with a firm grip around my ancles, shaking me so coins from my pocket scattered the floor around us. He with a big happy grin and me laughing to the point I almost wet my pants.

Great story. I am a friendly guy. When I worked I had a colder more professional manner I guess. But sometimes being friendly and not being intimidated worked well. Trouble makers usually have a game plan in there head. If you disrupt that game plan they often dont know what to do. I lost count of the times a guy got agressive and I just happily chatted to him, purposely ignoring his rude, agressive demeanor. You could see confusion grow in his face. Then more often than not he would become quite friendly as well.

Although sometimes you looked around tryin to spot the tree they had climbed down from. And you thought it was incredible that those actually had ruled the world once...
Most of the Brits enjoyed the Norwegian cooking as well, but they asked why it was so much dried, salted, smoked etc. And I explained that when you planned on sailing a small open boat over the open ocean for a week or so in order to rape and pillage some God forsaken islands, you needed to be sure your food wouldn't be spoilt on the way. Brits have great sense of humor.
One time I had some problems with, I think, Irish travellers. A group of three. When they got too unruly for my liking I told them kindly to leave.
That didn't agree with one of them. And you know, up in my face trying to provoke something. I calmly told him that I wouldn't fight him. Some of the members were barred as they fought, and one even got glasses. They fought with themselves because one of them insulted a man with a disability. So when they were coming in regularly, we were a bit weary of them. Overall, they were spot on. But they did try their luck. Trying to stay in when the dress code had kicked in or trying to get one of them in when he was underage or trying to take drinks outside. I have a friend who owned a hotel in the early noughties and his was the only venue that allowed gypsy weddings to be held. There were fights among themselves at every event. Kids were throwing darts at the bar staff during one. But, he would take more money from one wedding than all his other regular events combined. 🤔

From what I have seen with my own eyes, and have been robbed twice and had my car broken into twice as soon as they moved their vans and caravans in the spare land opposite my flat.
I can say that traveler’s are usually nothing but trouble. They don’t have any care for the law or other people’s property.
Like what you have described, I have seen a huge crew of about 50 of them. Made up of individual families mostly. The landlords I knew in the town that their pubs were close to their campsite, I was told by the landlords that they pull the discrimination card against travellers. Yet they didn’t realise they were like a reckoning ball through the town, smashing up pubs, cars, banging up anyone that looked like they could fight.
There are exceptions of course, but myself and everyone I know will happily say to avoid them at all costs. And I know most of them have access to shooters for a fact.
All the best, love the security stories matey.

One of the positive things that impressed me with Travellers here in Ireland was how they treated gay lads.
Travellers tend to be very religious so they had the views you'd expect. But when they realised how many of their sons, brothers, cousins were killing themselves over it that changed. From my side it seemed like a snap of the fingers, they were so family orientated that they couldnt have that and opened their arms. And unlike our modern lipservice to things, corporate sponsorship etc its genuine love for family.

Ur way too nice! I know exactly where that story was going. Business owners always do that shit. That’s why in this are of jersey, New York ,& Philadelphia those owners would have been extorted by making it seem like we had to go to somebody connected to get those guys off their back. Then they just gotta give a little bit to the people that had to sit down as tribute for the favor. Knowing we were the ones that backed them down. Or worse ended up just taking the place from them after a little while.. It’s sad to say, but you can’t help most ppl because they wind up effing u in the end anyway while losing everything themselves in the process. Just like those guys did. Most people don’t believe how much stuff like that happens. The club /restaurant business is a hard business. Especially if that area already has an organization with a strong foothold on it. You’re gonna be paying up for something whether it’s garbage collection, your restaurant linens, / mats, food deliveries or u have to pay the union for the the restaurant workers,n decorators are organized. Definitely not a business for the faint of heart. Great Story. Thanks for the content.

We have a guy who lives on our street who identifies himself as Romany gypsy. And he’s an okay guy, I’m never gonna go drinking with him but he’s an alright guy. But he’s the one who always has the loud music in the street, every street has one person that does that right? He’s the guy who always has the revving cars outside, he’s the guy whose dogs are always barking et cetera et cetera et cetera.
Anyway I got talking to him one day and it was the first conversation I’ve ever had with him and I didn’t know or care about his ethnicity. And he says to me all people around here don’t like me because I’m Romany gypsy. Everyone’s always complaining about me.
I says Look mate we’ve only just met, and I would never have guessed what your ethnicity was nor would it have been a factor but you are the one telling me in the first few minutes of us talking., I said I’m saying this to you as a new friend and as a peaceful guy but you kind of perpetuating the stereotype of what people think about your people.
So he looked at me and said so what do you mean by that. And I thought I was going to get chinned at this point. So I said mate have you not thought that your ethnicity may not be a factor in this, but you’re the guy with the loud music, you’re the guy with the barking dogs. You’re the guy with the revving cars. This is a peaceful street with many old people et cetera but you’re the guy doing that, so people don’t care about your ethnicity. You’re the one telling them that you’re identify as Romany gypsy, and in the same time you doing all the things that are gonna bring you attention. Maybe calm down a bit.
Maybe start doing some favours for the neighbours et cetera.
So I figured I was either going to get a slap or he was going to listen.
So he did he started calming down. He hadn’t thought of it like that. He thought that the world was against him so that he would do what the fuck he wanted because it didn’t make any difference people are gonna hate him anyway, cos he’s a gypsy. But he changed his ways and calmed down a bit and he’s right as rain now.
He’s thought of highly by the old dears in the street

"All groups of people have good, bad and those in the middle" (previous video) unless you are Somalian on a Brighton beach?
