You’re both correct. TC beat a team, Andrew Lewis, from Southern VA in the championship and shut them out. It was basically a home game for TC’s opponent. Marshall was the closest game they played all season and it’s probably why the producers set them up as the opponent but Marshall is also in NOVA. They would have met in the regionals.

This is hands down one of Denzel's best movies, and sadly it is also one of the more underappreciated films as well, as I rarely see reactions for this in comparison to many of his other works(is it less discussed due to the racial topics, maybe?). Coaches were a different breed in the past. My husband played soccer in our high school in western Pennsylvania. There was no such thing as a tie game in the 80’s. He once played a game with 11 overtime’s. He literally passed out cold in the last overtime before they did call the game because it was so dark. It was for the championships and for the first time two teams were awarded 1st place.
His coach was old school. My husband broke his nose during a game. His coach set his nose and asked one of the female classmates in the audience for a tampon. He jammed it up his nose and put him right back in the game.
The craziest story I ever heard is the team was traveling home from an away game and they were in two vans. The kids in the assistant coach’s van encouraged him to drive by the coach’s van and back then they called it “pressed ham” to the kids in the coach’s bus.
The coach, nicknamed Hitler worked as security at the local horse track in town. It was 11:00PM all of the parents were waiting back at the high school to pickup their kids, but that didn’t stop his coach. He stuck his hand out of the window and signaled the van to “follow him!”
He got into the race track even though it was late. He drove right onto the track and told the guilty boys (including my husband) and lined them up. He said “you think that’s funny? I’ll show you funny! Strip naked and take a lap” they all got naked and ran repeatedly around the track through horse sh*t. My husband says he’ll never forget one well endowed friend who he could literally hear him run in the darkness.
After they finally got back to the high school and parents heard of the stop over at the track…no one said a word. My husband’s Dad who was the nicest man told him “you should have known better, son.”
    Could you imagine that today???
Things have improved in some sense and yet that coach never had a losing season as long as my husband played for him. We didn’t have the talent of other teams necessarily, but could out run and last longer than any other surrounding team. There is something to be said for the discipline instilled in kids. My husband got a full ride to play for Pitt. So, it ultimately was a financial gift.
    Crazy!!!
Personally, I would have NEVER succeeded under that coaching style.

Great story. Thx for sharing. Even though authority was somewhat abused at times, it taught that generation respect and hard work. The youth of today are mostly weak minded and lazy and though we can blame the parents who raise them, thinking they want better for their kids; the youth of today should be wise enough to choose to do the right thing. Everyone chooses the easy route which, a lot of times, in the long run turns out to be more difficult. I prefer the old way...more respect and less selfishness. Nowadays everyone seems to feel privileged as if they're owed something.

We Are Marshall had me sobbing 15 mins in & I’m not sure I ever stopped..
    Rudy is a staple..
Cool Runnings is about the first Jamaican Olympic bobsled team.. it’s perfect!
All true stories.. all giants in their own rights!

The young hard head captain in the beginning with all the mouth and attitude also played Opie in Sons of Anarchy. He was Jackson's best buddy. Just give him a beard and long hair. His dad used to be on the show The Dukes of Hazzard, he was Boss Hogg's cousin.

I was 16 years old in 1971, and even though I didn't live in the south, I remember how people had these kinds of attitudes and how they acted on them back then. I have gotten to see change come, but it is still not complete. I am SO GLAD to see young people like you get a chance to see movies about how it was and what it took to move forward from where we were, because today I see people, for political reasons, trying really hard to break us apart again and trying to keep us even farther apart than we were. Keep up the good work Asia and BJ. We are ALL Americans and we need to see each other just like that.

A classic movie that holds a special place in my heart because I knew all the real people the movie depicts. I was a senior at T.C. when those events happened. Some old-timers don’t like the movie because it takes great liberties with the facts, but most of us love it because it is great drama with an important lesson. Julius died just a year or two ago after spending many years traveling around the country, giving inspirational talks on race relations.
Some truths and untruths: Alexandria was not a southern hick town but a cosmopolitan, metropolitan suburb of 110,000. T.C. had been integrated since 1965 and at the time of the events (1971) was 30% Black. Hammond (Yoast’s school) had just two Black students because it was in the rich end of town, and G.W., in the poor end, was 60% Black. Race was not the main issue at T.C.; school rivalry was the issue, due to the merging of the three schools. Boone was not new to the school. He had been assistant coach at T.C. for two years preceding the events, and he was my P.E. teacher in his first year, when I was a sophomore. I liked Boone a lot and had a good relationship with him even though I was not a football player (I was varsity cross-country and track). As most people know, Bertier’s first car accident was not as shown. It actually occurred in the post season, but the movie changed it for dramatic purposes. T.C.’s hardest game was not in the State Championship, but in the regular season, 21-16 versus Marshall. T.C. had 9 shutouts in 13 games. I saw all the regular season games. Oddly, the team’s best star was not in the movie; he was a running back who led the state in yards and touchdowns.
Yoast was one of the best coaches in the state at the time, and there was widespread resentment over Boone’s selection as head coach. It is true that the training camp at Gettysburg transformed the team, and students were marveling over it when they came back. Boone was a hard-driving coach as depicted, but he had a great heart for the game and for his athletes. Singing among the Black athletes (including some basketball players) was a longtime tradition at T.C, usually done in the locker room. The players were allowed to wear their jerseys in school at any time, and they actually acted as a calming influence as depicted briefly in the film. I witnessed an incident where a player used moral suasion and school spirit to stop a fight that was starting.
My favorite true thing in the movie is an event I witnessed: Ron Bass’s arrival. It actually occurred at T.C. in the first week after training camp. I was with the cross-country team, warming up at the end of the track straightaway. At the other end, a fancy car drove up the ramp from the parking lot and onto the track. Everyone was amazed; cars weren’t supposed to do that. Ron (with very long hair) and a military officer in uniform (his father) got out of the car and talked to Boone, who had stopped practice and came over to them to see what was going on. Later we learned that he was a hippie quarterback from California. He was terrific, both a fine passer and a great runner. It always kept our opponents guessing.
Bertier was a great success in the wheelchair Olympics in the shot put and discus throw. My brother met him in the gym in those later years and they played ping pong. Bertier won, because he was excellent my brother says.
