In the early 70’s we lived in Oklahoma. I was in the fourth grade and one afternoon me, my two youngest older sibs and some of our friends were out running around in the yard playing. A neighbor had come over and her and my mom were standing on the front porch visiting. All of a sudden something came flying onto the porch and hit the neighbor in the side, she cried out and doubled over. My mom started yelling at us kids, thinking we’d been throwing something around, which wasn’t all that strange for us to be doing, but this time it wasn’t us. Then we started hearing a loud ‘WHOMP!’ every couple minutes and we’d see something bounce off the ground. When my mom realized what it was she started yelling at us to get in the house. It was hail…shaped and as big as a medium sized patty pan squash. The hail didn’t fall as fast as the ‘Japanese’ hail in this movie, but it was about the same size and sometimes bigger. The local ice cream man kept some of the bigger ones in his truck freezer for a long time.

    • @MacTechG4
      @MacTechG4 Před 2 měsíci +1

The Day After was a 1980’s made for TV movie about nuclear war and the aftermath, but it’s nowhere near as gritty or disturbing as the superior British movies of ‘Threads’ and ‘When the Wind Blows’
Threads is technically brilliant, but cold and clinical, When the Wind Blows is a quirky animated movie that follows the absolutely lovable and endearing elderly Bloggs couple, the only characters onscreen, as their town falls victim to a nuclear detonation, the entire movie takes place at the Bloggs cottage
It is one of the most thoroughly bleak, depressing, and heartbreaking films you will ever watch, because it’s so intensely personal, the first half of the film is a slow ‘slice of life’ film where you get to know and love Jim and Hilda, who could easily be your beloved parents or grandparents, the voice actor’s absolutely inhabit their roles and make then absolutely believable and real…
The second half of the movie? Well, no spoilers, but a nuke does go off in the nearby town… I’ll leave it at that, they’re on the far outskirts of Ground Zero
WTWB will rip your heart out of your chest through your rib cage, show it to you, then stomp it into a fine red paste before your eyes.

So the way someone taught me to whistle with my fingers is to push your tongue back with your fingers and brace your fingers against your lower canine teeth and just play around until you get it. The intro scene is in part based on reality, back in 1986 a 1,500 square mile Ice berg (3,900kmsq) weighing 1 TRILLION tonnes broke of the Antarctic ice shelf, It's still around today 38 years later and just made the news for doing a complete 360 degree spin as it slowly heads north towards the Atlantic ocean. It's so heavy it's dragging on the ocean floor.
There's a HUGE dollop of artistic licence in this movie but many of the basics are correct.
More worrying than A23 is the ice melt in Greenland, should that entire sheet melt sea levels could rise by upto 7 metres globally (100 feet). it would dump TRILLIONS of tonnes of cold water into the northern Atlantic and cause the Gulf stream to stop and reduce temps across the entire Northern hemisphere to the point we enter another ice age. Europe Asia and North America plunged into arctic temperatures as a result.
Last time something similar happened was 10,500BC when the north American Ice sheet melted over a 1,200 year timescale (called the "Younger Dryas" though some recent studies suggest it could have happened in a much MUCH shorter timescale), that event raised sea levels by 420 feet, even if it took 1200 years that's STILL an average sea level increase of over 4 inches a year.
There are over 500 great flood "myths" around the globe, this event is quite possibly the grain of truth behind them. From Atlantis to Noah in the bible. All could be a legacy of this one event from 12,500 year in our past..

Any real storm in history that was so bad, may 3rd tornado, hurricane Katrina, San Francisco earthquake or the Boxing Day Hurricane, shows that no matter what you throw at us, you can’t kill all of us. I mean you could say that it’s a true story. There has been many ice ages in our planets history. I read somewhere that during the last ice age, there was an ice cap that went from the North Pole all the way down to current day Iowa or Illinois. Pretty much stretched all the way across the Midwest and was like 2 miles thick. Pretty wild to think about.

Both Streiber and Bell are worth looking up for those not acquainted with Bell's show, Coast To Coast A.M. It may be difficult to find, depending on the platform, due to Bell's unhappiness with the direction C2C took under his former fill in host and eventual replacement, George Noory.
This book/movie also helped give a much needed kick to people to join the Prepper Movement. Whatever your personal SHTF moment is, EVERYONE should have a plan and prepare accordingly.

  • @gebendeavors907

    - The movie was based upon the theory known as "abrupt climate change"
    - The movie's plot says that due to global warming, the ocean currents that circulate around the world, just stop and this resulted in the tropics getting hotter and the North Atlantic getting cooler, and this happens overnight
    - However, in reality, some changes in the climate may occur, but it will take at least decades to happen, not a day, and it would not be as all encompassing as implied in the movie. In reality, the Earth has seen over its 4.54 billion years of existence lots of major swings in CO2
    - Where today the CO2 levels are at about 420 ppm, about 500 million years ago, they were somewhere in the 3,000 to 9,000 ppm range with the average temperature about 10 degrees C higher than now
    - Eventually, CO2 got reduced through natural imbalances, and about 360 million years ago we had the eighth of the nine defined ice ages of the Earth. Technically, we happen to be in the ninth Earth ice age that began 34 million years ago. Note that the last large scale glacial conditions ended about 11,700 years ago when the massive land glaciers receded as the atmospheric temperatures increased. We still have large amounts of ice at the Northern and Southern points of the Earth so technically we are still in an ice age.
    - Lots of volcanic activity eventually set the CO2 level to about 1,000 ppm that then gradually declined to today's level sometime during the time 23 to 33 million years ago; however, the average temperature was still 4 to 6 degrees C higher than what we have today showing that Earth-wide changes do not occur in a day
    - The Pliocene era, about 3 million years ago, was the last time we had this high of CO2 concentration; however, it was about 2 to 3 degrees C hotter then it is today that resulted in the global sea levels being about 25 meters higher than today
    - Why we are cooler at the same CO2 level is not completely known, only educated guessed at. Possibly the massive amounts of the remaining ice in the North and South hemispheres are still having a cooling effect even with an estimated 1.3 trillion tons of ice being lost each year. Still, it is estimated that it may take another 200 or so years to completely melt all the ice, and it is truly unknown if it really will happen, as nature is kinda sneaky in doing what it wants to do and not what we humans predict it will do
    - The Pliocene era was when the human species started to develop with the hominin Australopithecus anamensis showing up around 4.2 million years ago.
    - During the Pliocene era there was plenty of different types of mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians while this era had the most diversity in sea coral
    - Even with the two biggest asteroids to ever hit the Earth, life survived. The biggest asteroid hit about 2 billion years ago but had little effect on life on Earth because most life back then was single celled organisms that lived in the oceans. The second largest asteroid was estimated to be about 6 miles across and hit about 66 million years ago in Mexico causing a 110-mile wide crater. It also caused one of the five known mass extinction events of the Earth (at least 75% of all species become extinct over at most a 2.8 million years time) as it released the equivalent energy of 4.5 billion atomic bombs. The result was at least 75% of all species on Earth dying that included the non-avian dinosaurs
    - Some scientists believe we are in another mass extinction time that is being caused by man beginning around 200,000 years ago. However, the bottom line is that the Earth will still be chugging along as the CO2 levels go up, or down, different animals (including humans), sea creatures, insects, and flora will survive or die, and new ones will emerge. Amazing how man believes he can control nature by just lowering the CO2 levels in the atmosphere. The Earth (and nature) is a tad more complex than how much CO2 exists in the atmosphere at any given point in time
    - Lastly, it is when our Sun dies that Earth will finally end. It is estimated that that will occur somewhere between 7 to 10 billion years from now, when the Sun uses up its internal fuel and it expands to become a red giant and cause the complete vaporization of the Earth. Ergo, the Earth has quite a long amount of time left, and us humans will have little to do with its demise, if we even survive to that time
